Hitman isn't a golden opportunity at all. If MS wanted to work with IO, they would've contracted them through SE and had a game made, similar to Halo Wars 2 with Creative Assembly. I'm sure selling IO wasn't the first move for SE. Buying the studio now outright just is silly

A couple of years ago Spencer mentioned that his approach to acquisitions is when there's a good relationship in place and it makes sense for both parties. Has MS worked with IO Interactive recently?

Only to the extent that they work with any third-party developer.

Although IO's current owner is Square Enix, and there was obviously the Tomb Raider deal, so you could make an argument for a relationship existing at a higher level than the studio itself.

Knights of Aegis is definitely real, also seems heavily inspired by Bioshock (Dual wielding 'spells' and guns)

here's the artwork that leaked a while ago

iirc, it was crystal and Microsoft idea and they brought it to the higher level for approval. at least I remember reading that lol

Well, if you believe the random rumours surrounding the TR deal, the push for the deal came from within Crystal, who's always been an odd-one of a studio in terms of development pipeline, since Xbox is always their main dev platform.

We'll probably not know the true story until years later, if ever.

Hmm what's square enough worth these days? That would be a big acquisition.

Edit: only $4 billion? not That Big I guess

The funny thing I believe about this game that it's suppose to be a spiritual successor to Ghouls N Ghosts.

Some. Not a whole lot. Which frees them up for more first party.

I think Sony's conference will be all games, but I fully suspect a significant chunk, bigger than what some of us would like, will be dedicated to third party multiplats that Sony has partnered with.

Microsoft probably won't have that "issue" because they have fewer partnerships. That's a good thing, I guess, if I'm being optimistic.
I disagree. Especially since Sony spoke on their lineup today and it includes several of their exclusive titles. They also said pacing will be straight games again.

I don't think having fewer or more partnerships really matter. Sony and MS will either have 1st/exclusive content or they won't.

IO would make sense to acquire if the people up at IO want to stick together and want it.

I think Microsoft would be smart to get the Hitman IP, but honestly, if they buy IO, I don't want them anywhere near it, not for a long while. I'd want them started on making a new IP ASAP.

But, knowing Microsoft, they'd want to recoup their investment immediately and would have them crank out another Hitman game, in which I would have 0 interest.

you don't buy an ip which is majority of the studio cost and not use it lol. Microsoft could just hire the developers out right if they wanted them

Sitting here playing FH3 and wondering if they will announce Scorpio patches for old games at the conference. FH3 is probably getting one... Gears 4... Halo 5... any others?

Well, we'll soon find out.

Sure it does. Marketing partnerships come with their obligations. The more they have, they more have to spend time actually marketing them at their conferences. From what we know, Microsoft won't have more than, say, 5-6 at the most this years. That leaves a lot time for first party, and with how meticulously planned these conferences are, they would know months ahead of time how much they can dedicate and plan accordingly. I think there's reason enough to be optimistic and assume Microsoft will show a significant amount given their lack of third party marketing obligations. It's plain logical.

They wouldn't be buying the IP. They'd be buying the studio. The IP is what SE has thrown in to sweeten the deal, from what I understand anyway.

If MS just want the IP, they could probably just make an offer for it.

If they want the studio, the IP is just a bonus.

Unfortunately, I think that if MS do buy IO, they'll carry on with Hitman games, which kills any interest I'd have in the acquisition, but whatever.

Hitman Season 2 development is reportedly already well under-way, so no matter who ends up owning IO, that will most likely continue to happen anyway (provided the IP goes with them).

I think there may have been rumours they were working on a new IP as well, in addition to Hitman S2.

We will get a new Banjo this year or in 2018

In Sea of Thieves :(
bd7j4p6.jpg

Please tell me that pic has nothing to do with Gregg's tweets from earlier in the thread. That'd be really disappointing :(

Not that I was getting my hopes up for a Banjo game anyway, but still.....

Call me crazy but I honestly think the following games getting XB1 ports would be better (for me personally) than any other announcement, whether it's Banjo Kazooie 3, a Halo RPG, or even Half Life 3:

1) The Talos Principle
2) 999
3) Virtue's Last Reward
4) Zero Time Dilemma

Like I would be in heaven if those four games got XB1 ports.

Alas, they probably will never come on the system. Will have to play them on PS4 at some point.

That banjo image has been around for a long time now.

However that doesn't mean that the tweets aren't about that as we haven't seen them ingame yet.

I'd say everything from fall 2015 and beyond. Halo 5, ROTTR, quantum break, recore Forza Horizon, gears 4, halo wars 2 are guaranteed

Adding Dangonronpa to the list.

Give me:

1) The Talos Principle
2) 999
3) Virtue's Last Reward
4) Zero Time Dilemma
5) Dangonronpa series

And I won't give a shit about anything else.

Wow what a bunch of bullshit. So microsoft's conference is leaked? Why does that keep happening? Swear MS has dipshits working at their company.

I mean I'll watch their conference anyway and that seems like a damn good conference (minus the timed exclusivity for Borderlands). Would be nice to have a surprise though.

I think what may be very interesting is to see what kind of reaction this forum and gamers in general have over Borderlands 3 being exclusive for one year on Xbox. I'd imagine there'd be cutthroat "bloody murder" statements thrown around everywhere. But I didn't see no "outrage" over the MVC3 remaster being timed exclusive for 3 months (for what seemed like no reason) or the Crash Bandicoot game being exclusive for a year.

I bet you anything within 10 minutes of the Borderlands 3 announcement we are going to know when the game releases on PS4 but we are going to wait a loooong time before anyone finds out when Crash is coming out on PC / Xbox / Switch. That info will be obfuscated for months most likely.

Wait, the entire conference has been leaked?

That stuff isn't happening.

What are you talking about, Willis?

Part of those leaks seem to be heading in the direction of being true with Rand saying Monster Hunter coming to Xbox
Ninja Gaiden better be real

Whoops. I was talking about this link from the previous page.

http://boards.4chan.org/v/thread/379090451

I mean I was initially thinking "fake" but then someone on this page posted a tweet from Rand al Thor saying "expect Monster Hunter on Xbox, not exclusive" so I (maybe stupidly) thought "yep there it is - the leak has been corroborated".

If Rand al Thor is correct/trustworthy then the leak seems legit. Which disappoints me. Not because I think the conference is bad but damn, doesn't make sense to me why these people leak stuff like this.

I wouldn't put too much into that until we see something concrete from someone legitimate show up.

... Never?

In that case I wouldn't expect an acquisition of them before a studio like Undead Labs (State of Decay) or Playground Games (Forza Horizon), especially the latter which has proven they can release big AAA-tier games on time and to great critical and commercial reception. I don't imagine they want to acquire either one of those studios either, but I imagine they have a first right of refusal in place in case someone else comes in and tries to buy them.

If Microsoft bought IO they'd rebrand them as Brutal Games and have them churn out Brute Force titles forever. Noooooo thanks.

tweet in question I don't know how to link app don't kill me. rands pretty accurate i believe that plus they're rebranding monster Hunter from what it sounds like

I've never heard of Brute Force until now but I don't see the relation between IO and Brute Force. If MS bought IO they'd most likely gain Hitman along with the dev. I'd imagine they'd leverage that to make more Hitman games or (hopefully) some new IP.

I think anything that is a Play Anywhere title is almost a guarantee that it will have Scorpio specific benefits. So Halo Wars 2, FH3, Gears of War 4, Resident Evil 7 and some others.

Didn't the latest Hitman underperform commercially? I don't think it has a MP community to it either (because it doesn't have MP?), so it just doesn't seem like a fit at all.

The 4chan leak is like the Sony Monster Hunter leak. It took something that is heavily speculated to happen and sprinkled some details on top that are impossible to prove.

Both the Sony rumor and this one basically contradict each other regarding Monster Hunter. The Sony one just has about a bit more credibility due to getting one thing right already.

Either way, Capcom seems to be doing a multiplat Monster Hunter to exapnd the series, so I definitely think that's coming (they've said this a couple of times). But both the Sony rumor and this 4chan just took that and added some fake internal politics to the mix, making them very unreliable.

What else has IO done and what are their talents / strengths?

Just checking through Wikipedia now:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IO_Interactive

They've made mostly Kane and Lynch games and Hitman games. So third-person action games and stealth games. Not bad.... I wouldn't mind seeing a dev like that be added to Microsoft's 1st party group.

I really hope Microsoft isn't going to only greenlight games that have an MP community from now on.

Looking back at tweets from Jez Corden, although he says the leak is fake, mainly cause it lacks the big announcements he knows about, he never denies Ninja Gaiden, even when asked multiple times about it.

I don't want to fall down the rumor hole, but Fable Legends had a lot of finished assets that would be a expensive waste to throw away. Producing something with it makes sense, even if a core Fable would be better (which it would Microsoft).

It kind of seems that's the way they're going for AAA releases. I imagine they'll continue getting behind indie and AA SP-only games like Ori and ReCore when they see something interesting.
