Sony didn't really catch up overnight, it's sales were fairly consistent. It still finished well behind in NA, while being supported by relatively strong EU sales.
It sold consistently well globally respective to the 360 because of their focus on publishing great games later in the gen. I don't want to get into list wars, but this is what the last 3 years of last gen looked like http://i.imgur.com/zl10SZ0.jpg

That's a weird statement.
I'd argue a single competitor doing very well and the others having various degrees of failure is hardly a healthy industry.
The PS360Wii... THAT was an extremely healthy generation. This one? I'm not so sure.
I'm not claiming the industry is collapsing.
But I think it is *very* hard not to see that it is quite a different scenario from the PS2 era and, in many ways, even from the previous generation (that ironically right now feels less risk-averse than the current one, and I'm afraid that's not a good thing)

I've been promising myself a new PC since about 2014... still not got around to building it. Find myself wondering if I'll even bother buying Scorpio - I just don't have enough time to play now I have kids. A couple of games of FIFA and Rocket League a week is about all I manage. Should probably get a Switch and just play in bed!

Sony always said ea access is not a good value to their consumers. just because they say it doesn't mean it's true. i will concede though if sales data proves otherwise.

Being more powerful yet less expensive possibly, and Backwards Compatible. PS4 still has the game lineup and install base though. That makes all the difference.

The Switch/Xbox One/Playstation 4 don't matter to non-gamers. The Wii was a rare home-run of sales to an abnormally wide audience.

How was the Pro not a quality product? Also it didn't matter if Sony marketed the Pro with all the money in the world, the slim would have still sold more on price alone. I get you're excited for Scorpio but there's no reason to Troll other companies or systems.

PS3 had Very few games for a while and It Was a very expensive machine, 360 had games already and It Was cheaper, when ps3 price reduced and exclusives started appearing then It started selling.
If i am Microsoft i would rebrand Scorpio as a xboxtwo that can play xbone with upgraded graphics and announce exclusives for xboxtwo and Cross gens, by the time ps5 is released the price of the system would be smaller than ps5 and with a good library, then i would announce a xboxtwo pro to launch together with ps5, to compete with Sony hardware.
Yes i would kill xbone, but that would give an advantage in Next gen like It Was for the 360.

come on, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. didn't phil spencer say the reason ffs14 isn't on xbox because of a deal in place? while a SE rep said it's because (at the time) mS said crossplay is a no no?
whatever the case may be, the Wii was an exceptional feat. and considering that Ps3 and 360 combined was a base of 160m, i think a lot of people that owned one or the other, also owned a Wii.
Eh. We will see if it succeeds it not. I'll gladly eat crow if not.
Yeah, the Wii is an extreme outlier.

Honestly, I find jabs like this from corporations to be borderline petty. Sony and Ms, especially the latter, have been doing this for a looong time. They aren't the first companies to be doing this of course either.

Development costs on average were VERY different from today back then.
It was definitely a more sustainable market, I think.
You don't have a 4K HDR monitor, you want to play on your couch with a TV and surround sound, you don't want to build a PC, you don't want to pay for a gaming PC. Hell, I HAVE a gaming PC but I'm still getting the Scorpio.
Most of the gaming market has PCs that are worse than the Scorpio.
Yep. Xbox had their most successful holiday season ever last year despite all of their major first/second party games being available on the Windows Store.
I imagine MS is already planning what's next after Scorpio and if they're on 3-4 year cycles between refreshes, about a year apart, then they'll keep trading places.

I'm sure it'll be a success, especially if sold for $399. That doesn't mean the Pro isn't a quality product.
