Profit margins were probably different too though. Since games were cheaper and online play wasn't as household as it is now.

I don't get that picture.

How does googling a random set of numbers (that is likely a release date) which leads to a random image mean that Scorpio will cost $399?

It's not like Microsoft chose that exact date just because of that image.

Seems to be more of a coincidence than an actual hint, no?

It could be priced at $399. But I don't think that image is related.
 
I still dont get why it matters so much if one box does better than the other box? These arent sports teams, would some of you be happier if there just wasnt an xbox? Even if you dont own one and it doesnt effect you one bit? Im trying to understand the mentality of "warriors".

Thing is.. just because three companies see sales parity, to a degree, doesn't mean it was healthy. there was no clear industry leader.. at the tail end , they were all fighting off mobile in their own ways. Japan sunk, it went on too long, and a certain company who had it in the palm of their hands, got lazy (or complacent, whichever you choose) and let it slip. Any (all) industry needs a leader, one to push the envelope and innovate. That free for all of last gen sucked.

That being said.. the WiiU was the best thing to ever happen to this industry. Hear me out.

The Wiiu's failure led to the Switch. And what it also did was, perfectly offset the industry leader. The Switch came in when PS4 was at , what 50mill or so? Now the Switch is on par to do just as good with the PS4 ready to target the mainstream. If it does you, then can't ask for anything more healthier for the gaming industry.

What this means for the Xbox , we'll find out. If it can find its path then that'll be great. But I believe gaming is healthier now than this time last gen.

My point still stands though, Xbox first/second party games being available on PC isn't killing the Xbox division's bottom line.

Not to mention, Phil already explained that they expect the Xbox One S to still be the big seller anyway.

This is basically a box for the people who want great multiplats that don't care about PC.

And they'll be a Scorpio 2 immediately after the PS5, because Microsoft is going genless and will win the money war in releasing higher specs. It's foolish to think PS5 will release and Microsoft will do nothing to retaliate, now that they're bent on having the best hardware by far.

It wasn't bad at all, it as factual. Scorpio CPU is better than PS4Pro CPU. That's a fact. So they're both a Jaguar of some sort? Still better. Just like my friends 6.4 Hemi is better than my 5.7 Hemi.
 
I can see Scorpio selling a lot more to Xbox One owners than PS Pro sold to PS4 owners, simply because there is a bigger difference in power between the Scorpio and Xbox One than PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Going from the weakest console to the strongest is an easier upgrade for many people.

It's also the feeling you get from the internet, with PS4 owners not in a hurry to upgrade and Xbox One owners wanting to upgrade.

No point in trying to understand because it's something that doesn't make sense. At the end of the day competition is beneficial to us the consumer, so yeah we should all be hoping all 3 big console manufacturers stick around.

I think so too. Plus, MS seems more 'all in' on Scorpio than Sony has been with Pro.

I mean, even during the PS360Wii generation higher development costs (and despite more expensive games), basically forced publishers to rely on various kind of additional income like DLCs, microtransactions, subscriptions, etc.

Even barring the Wii (which is nonsense to me, but let's do it anyway) we're talking about - roughly - a 180 million unit installed base.

How's that supposed to work with just one successful platform holder at around 100 million, and games arguably even more expensive to produce compared to the previous generation?
 
Isn't Scorpio sign birthdates in October? I'm not into what people signs are, but that would be cool if Scorpio sign was indeed October

i don't think devs were forced to come out with other ways to make money; some of htem still don't do micro trans or subscriptions. i think most devs and pubs also expect one hardware to always lead and model the way they make product output from there; i don't think they expect most consumers to buy two platform versions of a same game

Problem is you are only looking at console sales numbers and saying it was healthy .
Nintendo made loads of money last gen but Sony lost billions .
There is more to it than just console sales for eg if i remember right EA is doing better this gen .
There are whole bunch of factors to take into account when talking about industry health .
 
If $399 converts well to a UK price (£349) then ill definitely consider it.

Even then its still a really hard sell as a PC, Pro and switch owner.
That said I think id rather buy a Scorpio than continue to deal with WinStore for MS exclusives

I have to disagree here.

First, mobile actually became a thing (relatively) much later the course of the generation.
Second, I'd argue there actually was a clear industry leader... or should I say, there were two.

Sony and Microsoft were basically a single entity, supported by the entire AAA western game industry. On the opposite side we had Nintendo with the Wii and its weird mix of great first party efforts (both for casuals and core audiences), a bit of japanese stuff and loads of mostly western shovelware.

Having said that, I believe it's easy to see the current market scenario is less healthy by just looking at the amount of AAA games (clearly decreased) and the almost non-existant anymore AA market that is somehow slowly being replaced by high quality, relatively high budget "indie" productions.

And of course there's mobile too.

Issue is unless they are able to convey the scorpio being the best place to play your third party games at any resolution. It will fall into the premium trap that to get the most out of this console you need a high end 4k tv.

Which adoption rate currently is still somewhat shit.

A few things.

1) Microsoft didn't have their eyes set on having the most powerful console in the past, and this is obvious. Since PS3, Sony has always tried to have the better tech. This changed with Scorpio, and IMHO it was due to the massive "power" and "true HD best graphics" outrage that has been rampant all this generation (something certain posters are desperately trying to downplay when it was getting to be so extreme that I've had casuals walk into my store and be flabbergasted at the Xbox kiosk because they assumed it had Wii-like graphics due to the internet and couldn't tell the difference between the Xbox/PS4 kiosks on our 30 inch screens). This is something Microsoft will focus on from now on, and looking at their Surface line, they're doing a fantastic job at hardware for a software company

2) Microsoft is vastly richer than Sony can ever dream of, and according to this thread will even be taking a loss on consoles sold to gain marketshare and/or mindshare, because they can. That is some crazy stuff right there. And looking at Satya's statements, Xbox is an important part of Microsoft (unlike how some anti-Xbox peeps try to push a narrative that Microsoft will dispose of Xbox because of X, Y and Z, which is hilarious in retrospect), and if Scorpio gains some traction and generates profit/revenue for them in the long run, we will see this continue to be the case. This is something they can do with ease, unlike creating new studios and IPs from the ground up which takes many years and is an unguaranteed investment (that's not to say they shouldn't invest in exclusives, because they absolutely should and I hope they do over the next few years).

If they further merge Windows 10 and Xbox, I expect Steam to become a less priority.

You can't beat Windows 10/Xbox/UWP also Windows 10 S combo

If Xbox Scorpio is a Windows 10 S-like device, then expect it to further invade Steam and also support future Windows 10 S Gaming PCs.
