It happens anytime Matt tells folks to bring their hype down, which I've seen him do a couple of times. But maybe he's just being helpful? It doesn't mean he has an agenda. Dude is a dev and I'm sure he's just as helpful in Nintendo and Sony threads. If you have a legit beef with the guy, address it. If you have an accusation, prove it.

Matt's insider status (he's a dev) occasionally gets questioned despite him being right quite a bit. I remember when he mentioned the bit about the Scorpio not having Zen or something like that. That was a fun thread.

Microsoft is to blame for the out of control expectations, with their "first true 4K console" marketing, the teaser videos of people looking like they are seeing the 2nd coming, and treating Scorpio like it will turn the tides of the console War (indicating competitive pricing)... we're at the point where if it's not $399 and having mind blowing & experience transforming performance, many people will be disappointed.

Huh? Phil has gone out of his way several times to say that it is a premium piece of hardware when asked about the price. The only thing he has said is that it won't be an unheard of price point. If anything it's the fans/detractors who are getting things wild for one reason or the other.

Phil is great and says the right things in interviews, the marketing team is setting things out of control imo. Calling out Sony in the teaser videos "6>4" and calling it the "first" 4k console is drawing and encouraging comparisons to the pro.

What the hell are you going on about? Phil and others have always said it is a premium console and never indicated that it will be priced low. They have been consistent in saying it is going to be premium. They have also been very clear that the Xbox One S will be the leading sku as far as sales are concerned for them, they have never said that Scorpio was going blow away the competitor in sales and turn the tide.

You basically have no clue what you are talking about.

Encouraging comparisons to the Pro making Scorpio seem like more powerful, premium if you will, hardware. What about that makes you think all of a sudden that it will be cheap? They SHOULD be hyping all of it's features if it's going to have a premium price. That's how you sell your product.

MS hasn't said anything about price or the console's success. That's all speculation and wishful thinking. In fact, Spencer only ever answered questions that called out their expectations of the model being the premium console and that the vanilla one will always be the one that sells the most. It's E3 fever and we'll probably all know the price inside the next 48 hours.

None of it should be a problem so long as he dishes his knowledge of the industry equally. Xbox fans seem to think that he mainly does it in Xbox threads. I personally remember him chiming in during the old WUST times. No idea if he tempers expectations with Sony though, I didn't read a lot of the PS4Pro threads. I'm just tired of the cat-and-mouse game. If people want to call him out then have proof. If there's no proof then stop attacking him. It's silly and distracting.

It's just how it is. People generally have no problems with vague statements when they're positive (see: Jez teases). And that's just not this thread but GAF/Internet in general.

Yes, I think people should understand that price-point is something that certainly is not lost on Phil Spencer. I'm sure Scorpio's price has been carefully considered during many meetings in Redmond.

I personally think $399 is a bit too optimistic, but I also think $499 is too high for Scorpio to fly off the shelves. $449 is my guess, and I think that's a good number.

I've seen a lot of people talk about building a PC for $450-500 instead of buying a Scorpio. I say good luck. I recently built my son a PC. MSI Mother-board, RX480, Core i6k, 16 GB RAM, standard CD-ROM drive, Win-10, and that was $1000 not including monitor, keyboard & mouse.

watch the Scorpio reveal again, watch their teaser videos, and read what people are saying in this thread. The expectations are nearing insanity.

To be fair there's not going to be any proof until the actual conference. If MS comes out and shows very little, if anything at all then he was right when he said not to expect anything. If its the opposite, then he's full of crap

Nah dude, Greenberg is doing his job. And he's doing it well. I don't think a single company has ever been accused of being at fault for selling their shit.

personally i love when people chime in with closer viewpoints. unfortunately his post was as cryptic and condescending as you can get without saying anything.

Again, you have no clue what you are talking about. The reveal was talking about 4k and being the most powerful console and if you seen any interviews with Phil he has constantly said it was going to be a premium console.

Just because people are wanting $399.99 or hoping for $399.99 is just that, being hopeful. I also hope it is $399.99, but my opinion it will be $449.99 - $499.99. Even when the first discussions of price, many were saying $499-$599.99. $399.99 is just a nice price point and some are comparing the $499.99 price point of the Xbox One at launch versus a $399.99 was why MS lost a lot of sales. It could be partially that, but again, Phil has been consistent about saying it is a premium console.

A lot of people have also been telling others to keep expectations in check, not only on the price but any announcements. I am going into the MS presser with my expectations in check. If it is $399.99 and they show a lot of software then I will be very happy and surprised, but those expecting lofty things are potentially going to be let down.

We will know soon...

$399 is a great launch price for a new console. I don't think it lights the world on fire but it opens a lot of doors for people looking to upgrade. Still think even with that price they should have an upgrade path for existing owners too.

They have a really good shot with this thing to make good to a lot of current and former Xbox fans. Here's to hoping they take it.

I think they should absolutely sell their shit. I just feel like using their marketing to hype it up without showing it is putting them in a bad spot. the Scorpio reveal video is sitting around 5 million views where they say the power of the Scorpio has no boundaries and is a True 4K resolution machine, then followed it up with claiming 60 hertz. Magical Fall Out 4 in VR etc.

Spencer and Greenberg have the right messaging in interviews, but they aren't reaching millions of people with them.

You read this thread and you listen to games media talk and you see a lot of people under the impression that Scorpio is a generation above the pro. Reality is unlikely to be that apparent. you have huge skeptics like Jeff Gerstman saying that Microsoft might take a hit on the console and price it at $349 to stick it to Sony. It's crazy, and I feel it's going to lead to disappointment

IF the difference in quality doesn't match the price point THEN you can blame MS. So far though, they have handled everything swell.

I think he means that PC gamers are hoping the games will be on steam and not just windows 10.

No, as a new PC gamer myself I am realizing that almost every game has a marketing deal with one of the big 3. It's always hard to tell if a game is actually coming to any other platforms until the end of the trailers, and even then sometimes it's obscure.

I know I will be re-enacting that meme myself every dang time a game trailer goes up.

i'm not saying everyone is crazy, I'm just seeing a lot of crazy. Some people will be pleasantly surprised, some people will be spot on with their expectations, and some people will be disappointed. Nothing new with hardware being launched. My point is is that there are going to be a lot more disappointed people than usual with the expectation that the marketing team is putting out there.

So much for a 399$ Scorpio?? At least, reading between the lines that's my take from this comment. Bummer ):

Sit the fuck down and wait for the conference then. What else do you expect? Building hype is part of the business.

This is getting kind of aggressive, I'm out. Enjoy the show everyone.

Edit: I think $399 is a possibility, but I also think Sony has a ~$50 BoM advantage in the pro should they decide to exploit it.

I'm not sure if the fault lies in people writing like they're insiders, or people taking everyones' words to be like they're from an insider, but could we all just assume everything said is purely discussion unless stated otherwise?

I wonder if they're still going back and forth on price or if they set it firmly already.

$399 would be the killer price. $429 or $449 would be OK. I think $499 would get silence at the show.

Goodness. If they hadn't done that, nobody would have compared them.

Probably set many months ago. I predict they eat hardware costs to hit the $399

That would be nice, but I imagine they'll do a more expensive sku first.. Like the XB1S. Maybe try and move the expensive $499 one first with a $399 option available right during the holidays? Not sure. The rumored October time frame makes that kind of problematic.

Either that or they do a $499 sku but really emphasis the value.. However they do it. Would really need to wow people to show the value of another $499 console. It's not impossible.. Just a lot harder to do.

Goodness. If they hadn't done that, nobody would have compared them.
of course people will compare them, but Microsoft themselves saying "this is my competitor and I'm way better" puts some expectations on price. Porsche doesn't say their "911 does 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, which is way better than BMW M3, 911 is the first TRUE ultimate driving machine" because they are at way different price points.

Price determines sales.

Sales determine market share.

Market share determines investment.

Investments means better products that take advantage of the system.

So, if you want quality games to run well especially on Scorpio, then it's in your best interest it is priced reasonably, so Microsoft will have more reason to push and invest in its features and games taking advantage thereof.

All those things don't really matter when MS have a cheaper console for those worrying about price. This is being made out to be a premium console, so expect a premium price.

This is not going to be Microsofts saviour and suddenly millions of scorpios will fly off the shelves due to price.

This is for those that want a powerful console, not want to build a PC and happy to pay a premium price.

So how would everyone feel about a $499 Scorpio?

I wouldn't be surprised, but wouldn't be too happy with it either. But giving how strong the console supposedly is (if DF is right to compare it with GTX 1070) then I think it's not an unreasonable price, given it's a complete package with a controller and certainly 1TB hard drive.
