Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

So they decide to do something with the Metroid IP and that is to...

1. remake II of all games. Not I, not Super, but II. Not a statement of quality but if they were picking the best/most acclaimed that's Super and if they wanted to do this as a whole trilogy why not start with I?

2. Hire Mercury Steam to make it, when Mercury Steam basically did the same thing with the Castlevania IP fairly recently with Mirror of Fate with mediocre results. I mean, sure, they're being handed a template and have Nintendo for oversight, but the game would likely both look and play better had they simply hired the guy making AM2R and would have cost a hell of a lot less.

3. Do the remake on the 3DS, where the whole 2.5D asthetic has basically always looked like ass. Effective life of the 3DS remaining aside, this is a style that has consistently failed to translate well to 3DS hardware. The low screen resolution leads to muddy backgrounds, the weak hardware leads to low poly models and the system doesn't have the memory or (again) display resolution to mask those low poly models in quality texturing. In the end the game looks worse than most 2D sprite based games.

Yep. Sounds like Nintendo all right.

Should have paid Wayforward to start with Metroid I and remake the whole 2D history of the franchise. Then it'd look decent on 3DS and would upscale to a Switch release perfectly, letting them really move some software.
come the fuck on, can you imagine the shitstorm if they were remaking super??
they are just testing the waters

Thought they were done with Prime and wasn't looking for another one and then I find out that they're making a 2D metroid and showing it on treehouse only for it to be a kind of bad looking Metroid 2 remake. Excitement followed by disappointment for new Metroid twice in like an hour. That said, they only showed a logo for Prime 4 and they've taken some interesting new directions with Mario and Zelda, so maybe they'll do something surprising with it.

One bad game does not make a bad studio. I think Nintendo and Mercury Steam is a great partnership, personally.

No, but doesn't three bad games? All three of their Castlevanias were bad, IMO.

But I'm still willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope that Nintendo steers them the right way.

Wait...why are we mad about Mercury Steam? They are a great dev with lots of potential. Under Nintendo they'll probably be even better.

Remember what happened with Retro and MP1? People were mad at that announcement. Don't be such pessimists.

Mercury Steam is a known quantity. Nobody besides Nintendo knew Retro Studios at the time.

I really liked Mirror of Fates, so I habe faith Mercury Steam has the chops for this. Looks good so far.

Team Ninja was a known quantity and Sakamoto was also a known quantity, still didn't stop them from making shite on a disc.
There's no red flags on this one so it can turn out great.

As much as I think Mercury Steam did a pretty shit job with Mirror of Fate and half of Lords of Shadow 2, I hope they can pull this one off.
Any news on the framerate? On the Treehouse segment it seemed like a locked 30, but that could just be the stream.

Wow, just saw this. Looks like Nintendo really is listening to fans about Metroid. Prime 4 now this. Sadly don't have 3DS no more.

Fucking thank you Nintendo.

We've been waiting since 2004 for another 2D Metroid. After waiting 13 years can we just be grateful that it is being made and not complaining about how it's on 3DS.

I'm very happy about this. While it's visuals are not really pleasing, the gameplay in the stream looked actually like a lot of fun. It's also the first time that the shooting in Metroid seems to feel satisfying.

I didn't like the Castlevania games of Mercury Steam, but I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.

Man so many people here really HATE the 3DS, I used to think GAF loved the 3DS. Guess the hive-mind changed its mind.
People don't hate the 3DS. It's just that the 3DS's time is over. The system is archaic at this point, and they'd prefer to also have the option to play the game on their brand new piece of portable hardware. I know I'd appreciate the option. That's really all I want.

So I was a bit unsure about the remake given that it's Mercury Steam and that it's on 3DS, but I'm catching up on the demo now and it looks fantastic. Seems to be taking the Zero Mission approach a step further

Also Minako Hamano and Kenji Yamamoto are composing so I'm very happy!

MercurySteam did some great work on castlevania overall and I was pretty impressed with Mirrors of Fate, so there's some promise here for sure.

Though I'm just not sure about what my 3DS usage will be by then honestly, too bad this wasn't pre-Switch

It's literally everything I wished Other M would be.

The gameplay definitely looks better than the graphics on their own. I still think it's ugly as sin, but the game looks like fun. I didn't hate Mercury Steam's sidescrolling Castlevania because it had some decent things going for it but it definitely had more than its share of issues that prevented it from being really good. I think they can pull off a solid entry here.

Christ, so much port begging in this thread.

It's not like people are asking for it on PC, they're asking for it to be on the system that Nintendo sold to them as the replacement for consoles and handhelds.

Is the rumour that you created a Metroid prototype for Wii U and 3DS also bullshit?

Enric Alvarez: That's more bullshit.

Really?

Enric Alvarez: People have a lot of imagination and time to think about stuff, but that's not necessarily the truth.

So you're saying, categorically, you did not work on a new Metroid prototype for Wii U and 3DS?

Enric Alvarez: This is exactly what I'm saying.

LOL oh wow.

Well if it's ported to Switch they will definitely need to add stuff cause while it looks great on 3DS it won't on Switch unless they change things which I guess they can.

its his turn next brehs

So the trailer they talked about that you can view in 3D and all, where is that? I hope there is a version that actually blows up the gameplay to the actual screen of the 3DS.

Mirrors of Fate was complete trash and I have zero faith in this. Haven't liked anything by Mercury Steam thus far actually. Pass unless this gets high praise.

I don't know about Castlevania, but I doubt they mess this up.

Also all 3ds games have bad graphics especially when not in the 3ds screen. Thought it was just accepted at this point.

The complaints are silly anyway, the 3DS is a great system and it's perfect for Metroid. And the game looks very good, 3DS games are made for the 3DS not for HDTVs and 4K monitors which people here are judging the game on.

Nintendo killed it this E3 in regards to Metroid, as a Metroid fan this is a day for the ages.
