No. It's linear, hard to see (sprites too big, black and white graphics) and the spiderball makes traversal ass. I've beaten it but it's my least favorite 2d metroid game. Even the first game is better.
Desperately in need of a remake.

It was poor to average.
Had problems with no map, being on a monochrome console and having not many different tilesets.
Basically you get lost a lot. None of these problems are going to occur with a remake.

There are better Metroid games, but it's still enjoyable. It's very clearly designed around the Gameboy, from the extremely zoomed in camera (so you can see Samus on a tiny screen) to the more linear level design that's easier to progress quickly.
It helped shape the identity of the series but the game itself kinda sucks. There are few things they could do to make this worse than the original Gameboy game.

I've never finished any of the 2d Metroids, but the reveal of this makes me want to give them another try.
The one I played was Zero Mission, and while I was enjoying it, something else might have distracted me from it at the time.

As a super fan of the series short answer No. Long answer kinda.
The issue with Original Metroid 2 is that is very dated. As in there is no map and the game is quite linear. If you play the Fan made remake then its worth it. This game will probably be like Metroid Zero Mission as in updating the game to current standards. Super Metroid added so much to the series of making it more approachable.
That's kind of the point.
It's a maze game after all.
The whole point of the game not being separated by levels and bosses being dotted everywhere on the map is to make the labyrinthine design of the game world harder to navigate.
It's a feature of the game and kind of the point.
An ingame map is kind of like the hint system in the Prime games or the normal hud in BotW, a vast downgrade.
It's a massively important game in the series due to all the elements it introduces, and it has a really interesting exploration gimmick in the form of hunting down the Metroids in order to advance deeper into the planet, but it's really, really, really held back by the Game Boy hardware. It pushed the hardware to its limits and it really wasn't enough to do the concept justice.
The easy way out is pointing you to Super Metroid, it's the perfect entry point for newcomers.
It's also the easiest game of the franchise so if you want more challenge you have literally all the other games.
Zero Mission is also a good idea, it's vastly easier than Metroid 1 and comes with a hard mode and Metroid 1 so if you want nailbitter it's there too.
If you don't like getting lost, avoid Metroid 1 & 2
Yes it's a great game with an incredible atmosphere, but not if you want it to be Super Metroid. Though it's not really relevant since this seems to share nothing but surface fluff with the original. I think it'll be best to approach this as something entirely different and pretend that Samus went to a different planet for another Metroid hunt after M2

Zero Mission is modern enough and is a remake of the first game, course you'll need a GBA or a Wii U to play it.
Actually, if you have a New 3DS, download Super Metroid immediately, it's 50% right now and is still one of the finest games ever made.

Back when Nintendo stopped the fan remake, I always thought (hoped) that they were working on a Metroid 2 remake for the Switch launch. It would have been perfect.

For actual released games that are good for beginners, Metroid Zero Mission is a fantastic introduction.
Hmm...it's looking like they're turning this into more of a fast-paced action platformer. What I liked about Metroid was that it was a satisfyingly slow and deliberate platformer that was more about carefully positioning yourself and switching poses and missles well. The 360 Aim, plus the melee counter seem to go against this. Positioning and stance is going to be a lot less important now. I'm not really excited for this.
Retro never didn't work with Nintendo.
Retro was a mess before Nintendo completely took over.

Yeah but the original trilogy wasn't like that at all.
Metroid 1 is probably the closest when compared to the other games, it's very fast but if you run willy nilly you'll get killed in no time.
Metroid 2 forced a slower pace with screen estate being at such a premium.
Super Metroid was also way slower than its GBA brethren with the level design forcing players to think about how they would tackle progression. There weren't that many hallways where you could run and not care about what happened.
Not saying it's bad here but it's different.
Better make your peace because this isn't going to play like Metroid 2 at all.

I'm really eager to play this. Watching the half-hour Treehouse stream, I intuitively sense this will be great. Samus' shooting and movement is so fast and fluid, it looks like a joy just to run and jump around blasting enemies. Those counters for critical hits are great, too the dynamic camera really adds to the effect.

They didn't kill Castlevania. Lords of Shadow was one of the best selling in the series and a damn good game. Mirror of Fate was okay and LoS2 was brought down by some bone headed decisions by the lead director but still wasn't terrible and had a share of high points. There's a Netflix series coming next month and Konami has specifically name dropped it recently stating they know people want a new one and there could be one on Switch.
Even if you don't like LoS there have been a share of shitty Castlevania games before they even touched it.
