If you want to watch the best version of Dragon Ball, you need to watch:

1. Dragon Ball
2. Dragon Ball Z
3. Dragon Ball Super

Kai is a lazy, shitty, low budget, cash grab, edited down version of DBZ done 20 years after the fact. It's not fucking good. It's shorter than the original version, of course, but it's fucking weird and the animation is all over the god damn place because there's like 3 episodes of Z being spliced into 1 episode of Kai.

I will say I did like the Kai version of the Raditz arc. But yeah the editing isn't very good after that lol

but it's not

it's literally a shitty low budget edited version of the original run

IN THEORY Kai would be more authentic than the original run (i.e an animated version of the story with a quicker pace, no filler), but in reality, Kai is the absolute shits.

I honestly believe Kai will not leave the same impression on a viewer as the original show. In a bad way. It's too all over the place. Z is slower paced but far more focused.

There's no better way to have that classic Z experience than to drudge through 400 episodes, including riveting episodes such as Bulma versus a crab and the Garlic Jr. saga.

And then you have to start at the beginning again randomly when you reach a sick cliffhanger, to get the true European experience.

I highly recommend watching the original Japanese version of Dragon Ball and Z. It's a lot of episodes, but it's WELL worth it. We aren't just talking about any cartoon here. This is one of the most influential and popular pieces of animation in the history of the world, and for good reason.
Og dbz is terrible.

So do I watch it like this:

1) Dragon Ball Kai
2) Dragon Ball Kai The Final Chapters
3) Dragon Ball Super

Ignore:
- Dragon Ball
- Dragon Ball Z

?

Watch Dragon Ball Recut, it's a fan edit that removes the filler from the original Dragon Ball series. The same guy who made it is also working on Kai recut, which will remove the remaining filler from Kai and replace the video with a better quality image.

The original series recut is focused on Japanese but has an English option, while Kai recut will be equal for both.

Let people watch Kai, they don't know any better, this is fine.

They can get deeper later on if they want to.

If they just want to "get" dbz and be ready for Super and FighterZ then Kai is perfect.

Honestly.
This is so passive aggressive. Jesus. lol

Europeans had true dedication that's for sure.

We at least got a new episode every weekday before restarting over at the beginning again once Goku knocked out Recoome.

Thank god i never seriously followed DBZ as a kid, i would hate it and be confused. I was watching Z and GT at the same time though which brings moments of me wondering why is Goku a kid

I gotta say I've been caught by surprise at how mixed the opinions are at which way a new viewer should approach the anime. Anyway, last night I gave the pilot of Dragon Ball a go and I found it cute. All of the sound effects and Japanese voice acting added to that, and I had no idea that Son Goku have a tail and how naive he is. Seeing how he thinks a car is a monster, and how he had never met a girl until Bulma came across. I still do wonder if Son Goku really is human; I really don't think he is.

Glad you're enjoying it, the show is a fun ride.

Haha, I can still vividly remember the first episode of DBZ I saw. It was an episode in the Namek Saga, I believe the very episode where Vegeta stole the Dragon Balls. I kept thinking Vegeta and Goku were the same damn person, and I was very confused! Had no idea what the hell was happening, but once I started seeing people flying around and shooting beams of energy, that was a wrap.

Is the first episode of DBZ the most widely hated episode of anime of all time?

My gut says... maybe.

I found that I had this weird experience where my brain erases a lot of things that aren't canon even before I knew they weren't canon.

So I remembered Raditz pretty well, but I had no recollection of Gohan crying and running through the woods until I rewatched the series. Or him talking to a robot.

There was also that moment where Freeza eats a crab, and I felt like "this is so random that I should remember it" but nope.

Unless these got scrubbed from the US/Canadian broadcasts or something?

Yup, they were scrubbed in the Ocean Dub. I remember being confused when I first watched the Orange Bricks lol.

The Faulconer score is too good in places not to watch the original Funimation run.

Dragonball
Dragonball Z (original funi ver)
Battle of Gods
Resurrection of F
Dragonball Super 28+

I need Faulconer and Levy lol. I am a total sucker for nostalgia. It just doesn't sound right any other way to me.

The first episode I saw was episode 4. We had just moved into a new house and my brother showed me the show.

Nah.

I think i confused Yamcha for one of of the saiyans and i think i remember original DB running some years ago maybe as a kid and wondering why are Picollo and Tien such dicks. Also thought this Yamcha guy seemed cool because i didn't remember Yamcha in DBZ and never seen him in the games

Fuck. I need to find the Ocean dub for the full nostalgia experience, I guess. I also remember that they "changed" the theme song and I hated the new one; I guess that was shifting from Ocean to Funimation? I'm not a Dragonball historian.

Actually, can I ask some of you who have read the manga in Japanese a question? How does Recoome come across? I feel like he's vastly different across English media. In the Funimation dub, he's a generic idiot. In the manga, he tries Vegeta as a child because he's powerful enough to get away with it, and he's really more of an arrogant sadistic asshole than someone who is out-and-out stupid. In the Ocean dub, he was still a sadist, but it seems like they made him mildly intellectual for some reason.

P.S.: I'm also a Faulconer guy. Or at least a Kenji Yamamoto before he stopped even bothering to hide it guy.

I remember vividly the first time I saw Dragon Ball because it was the first airing of the first episode of Z.

I don't remember why it was so important that I had to watch it though, most likely it was because of my brother who watched DB.

The funny thing about watching DBZ back then was that, because we had both japanese Final Bout and Legends for the PSX, I was spoiled as alllll hell as to pretty much everything on the show before everyone around me.

Goku hadn't even fought Ginyu in the show and I already knew everything from Trunks killing Frieza to Golden Oozaru Baby Vegeta and SSJ4 Goku, lol.

The first episode I watched... it might have been 4? It was definitely Raditz. My cousin showed me the show and made Oreo Blizzards. Good day!

I think the first time I encountered the franchise was playing Super Butouden 1 on another relative's computer. Has no idea that it was an emulator. From what I could tell, it was a game where you beat up villains and then you recruit them to your side, which I guess isn't too far from the truth.

I think the first thing I saw on TV was the Mondo Cool episode, though CN was part of a cable package I didn't have so it was at a cousin's house.

Before that much earlier I saw some GT episode on VHS

Think my first time when i popped the DB cherry was around the Cell saga and i think it was around the time Piccolo fused with Kami and met cell who was absorbing people but i have been playing DB games separately

I was watching Dragon Ball on and off, but my first DBZ episode was er... forgot, Goku was running on the snake way.

I was surprised to see Goku being adult as I had missed the last Dragon Ball episodes.

I liked son Gohan and I got hooked entirely and it never went away.

I first started watching DBZ when it came to Toonami and I never stopped.

I don't remember how many times I saw Goku arrive on Namek and then next episode it's Raditz showing up on earth.

I don't remember the first episode I saw of DBZ. I saw the begining to Goku's arrival on Namik so many times on Toonami that I just don't know, haha.

There have been so many ways to experience the series over the years and depending on where you live. Nostalgia and personal preference with all of that are going to make some widely mixed opinions. Either way, I hope you enjoy the ride!

Oh, that reminds me.

Did you guys get all the variations of the Cha-La-Head-Cha-La OP?

I only found out there were 3 variations of the OP earlier this year.

From day one, we only got the last variation, the one that ends with Goku turning Super Saiyan.

I don't think I have to say what a giant spoiler that last shot was to show from the very first episode.

I went from Goku 's wedding in DB to Z.

Just like God intended.

Wow this version is pretty good,is it in Portuguese?

I love how no matter the language, Cha-La always sounds like a fucking anthem to everything that is awesome.

I grew up with the Spanish Latin version,

Fun fact: The first kiss I gave to my now SO was during a live performance of that version.

The only issue with OG Z is some of the filler is ridiculous. Like Bulma having a robotic suit and fighting crabs on Namek.

Was Ginyu Bulma in Kai? What about the best episode of Z, the driving cars episode? If that's not in Kai, fuck Kai, it's inferior on principle.
I would never watch fillers. Though sone of Z are good.

Kai is shit. Especially the german dub of Kai is shit, they changed all voiceactors from Z eventhough they were aviable and everybody loved them.

Very similar thing for me. Except it was YTV or Fox Saturday morning. Also we never made it as far as the Frieza saga. It kept resetting with the Vegeta/Saiyan saga. Between this and ReBoot going back to the first episode... man I'm just realizing how hard my childhood was.

Kai doesn't have the best Gohan moment. On Namek, sacrificing himself to stop Frieza, keeping him on the planet until it explodes.

He even gets a few its in on Final Form Frieza.

More importantly though, let's discuss that time that Freeza ate a crab. Because as a kid, I'd watch Dragonball Z and imagine being able to fly and shoot kung fu lasers. As an adult, I watch Dragonball Z and wish I could devour a crustacean just by chomping into it, shell and all. None of this crab cracker nonsense, forget the hot butter, treat it like it's a fucking saltine.

Why would they remove this from the dubbed version? This is high art.

Does Kai have the scene with him going SSJ for the first time?

Yes, they kept it in.

They did leave it in if you stayed up and watched the midnight run.
