Well, this is weird.

If you press Up, Up, Down, Down while highlighting Crash 3 on the main menu, the cursor will disappear.

What's interesting is on the PS1 original, this is the first half of a code that you need to enter to unlock a demo for Spyro the Dragon.

& this only seems to happen on Crash 3. Nothing happens on 1 or 2 if you do this.

Even weirder, it lets you enter Left, Right, Left, Right while the cursor has disappeared. If you enter any more, the cursor returns.
 
Maaaaaan I want to play this already! Sucks because I won't be able to play as much as I want tomorrow as I have to finish a project and submit it before midnight, if I spend too much time playing my mind will be thinking of the project I should be doing. On Saturday I'll definitely give it all the time I have (until Dragon Ball Super's new episode is out).

I loved that.

But an issue with the save/load screen is square is save and cross is load. It has a confirmation box to avoid accidentally loading but it isn't intuitive.

I just preordered it on PSN, never played any of them beyond the section in Uncharted.

From what I've seen they seem very unambitious given when they came out. I was really surprised to find out recently that the first game came out after Mario 64. Nothing wrong with a more limited gameplay style but from what I've seen of these games it looks like they would have been better off just making them straight-up 2D, what's the point of being able to move left or right five feet?

Still, I always wanted to play them as a kid and never good, only had Nintendo systems growing up and none of my friends with PlayStations had Crash. It'll always be kind of cool to see how Naughty Dog started out since they're one of my favorite devs now.

Right? I expected the first to feel rather dated anyway but damn I forgot how unnecessary some little sections here and there are. Like the cruelest jokes being played so early on
 
Ok guys - CB newbie (NiGHTS fanboy when this originally released). I think I'm gonna go 2 - 3, then 1 if I get around to it. Really just don't want to slog through 1 just because, particularly how much better people say 2 and 3 are, and don't have unlimited time for games these days.

Thoughts?

It is a bit like a Super Mario 3D World of its time, a comparison I've been seeing a bit of lately. The extra dimension is used in gameplay.

Crash games are a more natural evolution of 2d platformers into 3D than Mario 64. 64 just threw everything out the window and did its own thing.

You might as well just start with 1 first just to see if it clicks with you. If not then just move to the sequels because it's unlikely that it will click with you once you've played 2 and 3.

This game doesn't screw around and platformers are my jam, the high road in particular was just brutal, at least I got the gem.
Then slippery climb is all like "yeah but you died lol", which leads me to ask, does the bonus room count for those coloured gem related deaths? because I could see myself getting this one unless that's the case because that bonus room was kicking my butt.

This will actually be my first experience with Crash! I've never played any of the hames minus one or two levels from the 2nd one.

Yet I'm still so excited for this!

WHOA haha, we were there at the same time! I drove an hour and a half from western mass to get the signatures and have a chat with some of the developers. Had a nice talk with Kara Massie about my own history with Crash and its developers and she was gracious enough to record a short in-joke message for the Crash fanbase.

Keep in mind that at the time these games were being developed, 3D platformers didn't really exist. So while they absolutely seem unambitious next to Mario 64 (which was of course developed by a much larger, better funded, more experienced developer), at the time they weren't seen as playing it safe.

It came out a month later than super Mario 64. So they didn't know about it during development since crash was conjured up in 94. The game concept was translating 2d platformers into 3d. They called it sonics ass for a long time, since you saw the characters ass. So while it's not in the same direction as Mario 64, it still felt ambitious back then. And it looked incredible for a game of that time.

Crash one does a few things differently, but for me it's my favorite. The way the game is built around the overworld map feels like you are playing the levels at their locations while the sequels.. Well there is a different sense of progression as they are much more loosely tied together. It just gives a more consistent atmosphere It's also a little less all out with the goofyness compared to the sequels. It would be a shame to not at least give it a try in my opinion. The sequels are still fantastic. There are just some experimental elements to the first which are really cool in my opinion.
(not to mention that it has a lot of really good levels)

You need to come back when you have that particular gem.


There's also Skull Routes in later games where you need to reach that point without dying.

I assume these are still in this version, I haven't tried the new one yet.
