I had a sad when I saw he got an Executive Producer credit in Breath of the Wild.

RIP Iwata-san. So long, and thanks for all the games.
He's in the game too (kinda). Go to Satori mountain at the right time of day and you'll find a mystical deer god by a beautiful pond with a tree.

Remember when we sent him that collage thing we did showing our Mii's and "get well" messages?

What a fantastic person he was. Still very sorely missed.

Do we know if Iwata was involved in Odyssey as well? Would be nice if he just gets honorably mentioned for all Switch games until the next console releases.

Nintendo has since never been the same. Iwata left a big hole that will never be filled. I'm still not used to the new Nintendo yet.

Where is that from?

He was one of the few gaming personalities that everyone felt after he passed away.
He was really passionate and had a lot of charisma. Died too young too :(

Fucking hell man, there goes the tears again. Looking through that old thread and all the love people poured out for this man makes me weep with joy at how loved he was but also with sadness with his loss.

I saw his name in Splatoon 1 a few months ago and cried both the epic final battle and splatoon being amazing + seeing that name... It was a bit much.

RIP Iwata, you helped alot with gaming and did some crazy things development wise (pokemon silver/gold especially). The Switch and structure change of Nintendo are his legacy and i like it alot so far how Nintendo is finally changing for the better.

Also he brought the wii and ds those were massive behemoths.

One of if not the best business man/ceo no... gamer around is more fitting.

Thanks Iwata.

after finding out he was sick I assumed they didn't want to show him in his current state. I assume he looked even worse than the photo in the OP.

It definitely could have been the case, yeah. Just hadn't thought it was ever confirmed. The only reason I mention this is that if there's a possibility the Muppet footage was as Iwata-san desired for no reason other than his affection for the Muppets, that seems like it should be kept as a possibility, with the intention of celebrating that choice if it was in fact one made for only enjoyable reasons, if that makes any sense.
Either way, the situation is very sad and I think fondly of him and his remarkable qualities and contributions often.

Did you know gaming did a great documentary about his life and accomplishments. I just rewatched this yesterday, made me cry all over again. I like many just wish I had known more about all that he had done in his life before his passing. The main thing I had known about him outside of the directs was him willing to take a huge paycut so Nintendo didn't have to layoff anyone when the Wii U was failing and it hurts that he ultimately couldn't see the success of the Switch after being so willing to accept fault for the system and its short comings, even with fans constantly calling for him to resign because of the Wii U's failures.

Hell the month before he died was the E3 where Metroid Prime Federation Force was announced and the fan blowback was awful from that and I remember Iwata who clearly wasn't in good health at that point (although we didn't know it then) still taking the fan criticisms to heart and vowing to do better.

I don't think Iwata's importance should ever be understated, he accomplished so much in his life from making sure multiple fan favorite games were released to leading Nintendo into its most dominate era in the industries history with the DS and Wii but at the end of the day I think his greatest gift was just reminding us all that games are suppose to be fun, something I think gets lost rather easily both then and now as we talk about hardware specs and debating frame rates and other technical things.

So thank you Iwata-san and rest in peace.

Ugh, seeing that photo in the OP gives me goosebumps. I always remember him while wearing a Luigi hat. Best way to remember.

I love how the gaming community, including developers, came together to express their appreciation for Iwata and his influence. I miss him as well. I loved seeing a corporate executive who was not only transparent and talked directly to the fans, but could also poke fun at himself.

never seen the pic in op before. so slim I hardly recognize him. let's pray for him, such a great man for the gaming industry.

Truly the saddest thing about his death was that Iwata wasn't around long enough to see the Switch become the huge success that we have come to see it and how the Switch's first year has probably been the best first year Nintendo has ever had (if not definitely the best in recent time).

Still... RIP Mr. Iwata. You were taken from the world way too soon.

I still remember seeing the initial thread and thinking "wow, that name sounds familiar". Iwata passing away was so far out of my mind that it took a little bit for it to hit me and oh boy, when it hit me... :(

RIP

RIP Mr. Iwata.

Shigesato Itoi's letter to him after his death always brings me to tears.

Shigesato Itoi said:
"When I'm parting with a friend, regardless of the circumstances, I find it best to just say, 'See you later.' We'll meet again. After all, we're friends. That's right - nothing unusual about it. I'll see you later.

"You went on a trip far, far away, even though it was planned for many years from now. You wore your best outfit and said 'Sorry for the short notice,' though you didn't say it out loud. You always put yourself last, after you'd finished helping everyone else. You were so generous as a friend that this trip might be your very first selfish act.

"I still can't grasp what's happened. It feels like I could still get a light-hearted e-mail asking me out to lunch at any moment - after you've made sure lunch wouldn't disrupt my schedule, of course. You can invite me out whenever you want. I'll invite you, too. So for now, let's plan on meeting again. You can call me up whenever you like, and I'll give you a call, too. I still have a lot to talk to you about, and if I come up with any particularly good ideas, I'll let you know.

"So let's meet again. No - I suppose we're already meeting. Right here, right now."

Man :'(

RIP.

He caught a lot of flack during his time as CEO, but the second that we lost him, we knew we'd lost someone really special in the industry. I hope we all consider that when talking about the work that people do.

His influence on the company is still continuing today. He started the development of the NX with others as well as their mobile initiative.

The Rabbids+Mario Kingdom Battle game was green-lighted over a year before his passing.

Him talking about increased licensing years ago has led to a ton of Nintendo products over the last few years.

Happy he got to see the huge success of Splatoon before he passed. I remember him apologizing the weekend on launch on Twitter for there not being enough copies.

Rest in Peace.

There have been signs of the developers being affected. The BotW team recently mentioned it (as it happened during the development). Miyamoto and Ishihara from TPC have also both talked about Iwata several times since then.

ill have to look this up. thanks

I remember when the original thread first popped up and I kept constantly refreshing the page hoping and praying it was some kind of hoax, only to see the confirmation from Nintendo themselves come up. My heart sank :(

RIP Mr Iwata, you were one of a kind.

The very last name in the BotW ending credits....

It hit me hard. :(

Note:

I believe BotW is the last game to have Iwata credited as E. Producer. :(

I'm sure he'd be happy with how well Nintendo has been doing recently with the switch and their mobile efforts. That being said, whilst the directs are still good to watch in their own way, there was always something very... warm, whenever Iwata appeared on screen. This is going to sound a little silly, but there's a good reason why early directs were so memeable, and Iwata's presentation skills were a large part of that.

Also, it cannot be overstated enough, but he was some sort of programming madman, and I have a great respect for what he was able to accomplish. (How do you just casually make room in gen 2 of pokemon for Kanto. It blows my mind.)

A great man.

ill have to look this up. thanks

“When he passed away, there were moments we’d come up with an idea which we’d be excited to talk to Iwata about,” Hidemaro Fujibayashi, the game’s director, told the New Yorker. “Then we’d remember he was no longer here. Miyamoto told me it was the same for him. He’d come up with an idea at the weekend and would feel excited to speak to Iwata about it on Monday, only to remember. The sadness runs deep. This is approaching spiritual talk, but we had the sense that he was watching over our work. That became a source of motivation, a drive for us to improve and be better.”

I'm pretty sure everyone he worked with was deeply affected.

A living legend. The man did a lot for the community and his death is one that I'll remember for a long time.

Isn't he the reason for smash bros? He'll always be a god for that.
He was the one who encouraged Sakurai to convince Nintendo to let them use their characters for it.

He's also the reason Kid Icarus Uprising happened, actually. He wanted Sakurai to work on a non-Smash game for 3DS and was willing to let him use a preestablished Nintendo IP for it, and of course they went with KI.

Iwata was an important part of Sakurai's career. Wonder what he'll do now.
