Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker announced as the 13th Doctor!

There are like seven different current TARDIS props, though - and they couldn't get one? It's just interesting as the tradition has always been for the first photo to be in front of the /current/ TARDIS -- see the Smith one above - so for them to use one not current is, well, striking.

It is a bit weird but I think reading into any part of that teaser is probably not for the best.

Especially the part where the TARDIS key just materialises in her hand, the fuck's that about?!

Of course, Smith was photographed in front of the Tennant exterior too, but that was before his exterior was actually decided/designed. The decision to dig out a design not used since 2013 (for Day of the Doctor) for this teaser seems... well, it seems strangely specific, especially when this teaser would've been filmed when the current TARDIS props (of which there are more than one) were out and about, ready, being used for filming anyway. Hmm!

To me it looks like they basically animated in a photo still from the archives rather than actually had a prop out there. Guess they were keeping the filming low-key, no need for extra props.

Not a huge fan of this but can't be worse then Eccleston sooo

I'm not a fan of the casting of a woman as the Doctor. Too much of a departure from the grandfatherly aspect of the character I've kept in my mind all these years. For reference: Matt Smith came closest to that in the 2nd half of his run.

I was remembering the Matt Smith Doctor Who announcement image and how that was way different tone and costume wise than what we actually got.

So I wouldn't put to much stock into this quick teaser being how she looks or carries herself when the show begins.

Yeah I remember people thinking Eleven would be a "douchebag" based on that pic

yeah, he was given a matrix coat at first until he spoke up about how wrong it felt

though she is also clearly wearing capaldi's clothes, too

Watched her in Broadchurch and loved her as an actress. Never seen her in a role even close to this, so it'll be interesting to see if she can pull off the eccentricity the Doctor usually shows.

Very interested to see this. I just hope the writing is better. Capaldis run hasn't been the best because of the writing, although I'm only now starting the latest season that just finished.

Capaldi's DOCTOR never really jived with me.

thinking about it now, Matt Smith was my favourite - goofy-looking bastard was endearing and charmingly aloof.

Maybe it's the one they have out and are using for the first Doctor?

The first Doctor's TARDIS is a different one entirely - it's tiny! It also has the brighter blue and the St Johns logo - basically, when Moffat introduced those on Smith's exterior at the end of The Eleventh Hour he was restoring something from the very genesis of the show that was lost around the 2nd Doctor's run.

The 'typical' TARDIS for 2-10 is the design we see here, and Moffat put back some elements of the original Doc's (plus some influence from the TARDIS from the non-canon movie where Peter Cushing was the Doctor) into his design for Smith/Capaldi.

Oh aye, that's true. But -- they couldn't find a current still from the millions of promo shots?! I'm mainly just curious to try to glean any small hints about the era from what we see, since while (no doubt) this is thrown together (IE this is most certainly not gonna be the style of costume) this is the first thing we're seeing from the Chibnall team.

I sort of dislike the weird electricity effect they used, but yeah, not gonna read into that. But I'd hate for it to become a thing lol

Wow. What an incredible choice. I've only seen her in Broadchurch (maybe she was in a Black Mirror episode too?) and she was excellent.

I'll tune in to her first episode, but I doubt I'll stick around. Doctor Who is wank. But I hope it's a great success for her.

I also hope that Peter Capaldi goes back to his sweary best.

I'll be fascinated to see how she differs from previous incarnations in terms of temperament and personality.

I personally hope she'll be a warmer take on the character. Capaldi's take was a bit too cold and aloof for me.

Fell out of Doctor Who a few years ago and was hoping for an interesting casting choice to get me to jump back in but honestly this feels like the most boring female pick possible. I've seen her in Attack the Block, Black Mirror and Broadchurch and she doesn't strike me as someone who could pull off the Doctor. She feels so... vanilla. Hayley Atwell, Eva Green, Phoebe Waller-Bridge... gah, so many better options I would have been instantly back in with.

Of course we haven't seen shit yet so for all I know she'll be great but yeah I can't be excited about the pick right now.

Not happy with this, but I'll still watch. My wife is out right not watching the show right now, she did not want a female doctor.

Better writing than Tennant got.

The fan favorite of the Tennant era was an episode he was barely in.

Realistically both Tennant and Eccleston were kind of rocky. Some amazing episodes, mostly decent ones, and then a few really bad. I thought Matt Smith era was by far the most consistent. There were a few that weren't so good, but most of the time I knew it'd at least be worth it to watch.

I'm sure they auditioned her. I'm sure she'll be aces.

BBC Interview said:
7. What do you want to tell the fans?
I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender. Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.

Can we get this in the OP?

Rest of it is really awesome: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2017/jodie-whittaker-13-doctor

And I feel like we may have the same issue with this doctor but hey I can't really form an opinion till the first season is out.

It's just... even if Chibnall isn't writing great episodes, it's about the room.

Most people seem to like RTD's direction better than Moffat, but Moffat wrote RTD under the table in everyone of his own seasons. That's why he got the job in the first place. Bring in some good writers and there will still be great episodes, whether Chibnall does them or not.

You've seen exactly zero of anything but it's already "forced"... amazing

Jesus Christ.. See this is why things are so intolerable. I did not state anything as fact, said I would give it a chance, just that it felt a certain way. I did not state that this feeling is justified or not , just that it is how I feel about it. But hey .. don't let that stop you attacking me anyway.

Attack?

Calm down.

Haha, yes I'd have gone for a recent one. Though it's also the first promo shot when you google image 'Doctor Who Tardis'. :P

I'll tell you one thing, the first episode is going to pull in huge numbers.

Thirteen need-to-know answers to questions about the new Doctor Who

1. What does it feel like to be the Thirteenth Doctor?
It’s very nerve-racking, as it’s been so secret!

2. Why did you want the role?
To be asked to play the ultimate character, to get to play pretend in the truest form: this is why I wanted to be an actor in the first place. To be able to play someone who is literally reinvented on screen, with all the freedoms that brings - what an unbelievable opportunity. And added to that, to be the first woman in that role.

3. Has it been hard to keep the secret?
Yes. Very hard! I’ve told a lot of lies! I’ve embroiled myself in a whole world of lies which is going to come back at me when this is announced!

4. Who was the first person you told when you got the role?
My husband. Because I was allowed to!

5. Did you have a codename and if so what was it?
In my home, and with my agent, it was The Clooney. Because to me and my husband, George is an iconic guy. And we thought, what’s a really famous iconic name? It was just fitting.

6. What does it feel like to be the first woman Doctor?
It feels completely overwhelming; as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be. It feels incredible.

7. What do you want to tell the fans?
I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender. Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.

8. What are you most excited about?
I’m most excited about becoming part of a family I didn’t even know existed. I was born in 1982 - it’s been around longer than me, and it’s a family I couldn’t ever have dreamed I’d be part of.

9. How did Chris sell you the part?
We had a strange chat earlier this year where he tricked me into thinking we were talking about Broadchurch. And I started to quiz him about his new job in Wales, and asked him if I could be a baddie! And he quickly diverted the conversation to suggest I should consider auditioning to be the 13th Clooney.
It was the most incredible chat because I asked every question under the sun, and I said I’d take a few weeks to decide whether I was going to audition. He got a phone call within 24 hours. He would’ve got a phone call sooner, but my husband was away and there was a time difference!

10. Did he persuade you?
No. There was no persuasion needed. If you need to be persuaded to do this part, you’re not right for this part, and the part isn’t right for you. I also think, for anyone taking this on, you have to want to fight for it, which I certainly had to do. I know there will have been some phenomenal actors who threw their hats in the ring.

11. What are you going to wear?
I don’t know yet.

12. Is that your costume in the filmed sequence which introduced you as the new Doctor?
No.

13. Have any of the other Doctors given you advice?
Well they can’t because they haven’t known until now, but I’m certainly expecting a couple of calls - I’ve got a couple of mates in there. I’m mates with a companion [Arthur Darvill], I’m mates with a trio of Doctors. I know Matt Smith, Chris Eccleston and obviously David Tennant. Oh! And let’s throw in David Bradley! Four Doctors! So I’m hoping I get some calls of advice.

Hopefully she's too busy making a new series of Fleabag.
