Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker announced as the 13th Doctor!

A bit predictable to pick a woman right after introducing Missy, but it's as good a time as any, and the Doctor's complex relationship with her makes it natural. Definitely interested to see who they pick as the companion now, and more importantly...how the show changes under new direction.

Return to Tennant Golden Age pls.

This is great!

Kinda obvious that they would go female since the show had been pushing the idea out for quite a while with Missy pretty much them saying

"Yeaaaah just a heads up the next Doctor miiiight he female or not white but it shouldn't effect the show writing that much."

Personally I think it's cool that the Doctor is female but my family response is;

"Okay but they still chose a white person though,"

And honestly speaking they do have a point and Doctor Who still has a lot ground to break.

@AFCSmashEdit
Bet you're gutted Gary no doubt you were hoping the new doctor would be a refugee

Man, please do a POC next

I think he's not so much as commenting on Whittaker becoming Tennant-like, but more like hoping the show will return to the Tennant glory years.

Yeah, but those glory years are pretty dependent on that kind of Doctor. I don't know if she could (or should) do that.

But I'd like something that feels a lot like Eccleston's season, but without all the bullshit behind-the-scenes sabotage.

I wonder if Michelle Gomez' Missy will come back during Whittakers era. I didn't see no regeneration! I think I just like the thought of these two on screen tbh. Would be a good chemistry. Although they're probably done with the Master for a while now.

All of my female friends are not too pleased with this announcement. I really don't get it.

Expectations that the Doctor should have to be some male eye-candy I guess?

I mean Capaldi was an older man, but still good looking in that silver fox former rocker way. All the new Doctors have had strong jaws and attractive features- Smith was a bit unconventional comparatively but still young attractive male.

I could get behind this. I'd like to see a relatively more grounded, approachable take on the Doctor who encounters threats who exude a much more immediate sense of danger. It's hard to explain why, but Series 1 really captured that feeling for me, like when we got to see The Doctor freaking the hell out after catching sight of just one Dalek. That version of the character could come across as very vulnerable in a way a lot of the other incarnations weren't, coming across as much more breezily infallible and untouchable as heroes in comparison.

That's what I'm thinking. Ive given all the Doctors a fair shake and am excited to see how this goes. Will always miss Matt Smith though :(

I don't think we're gonna get something Tennant-ish.

I think she's gonna have a Doctor closer to Davison & Eccleston.

I don't mean the Doctor as a character -- I mean back to the quality of the episodes during that time.

I've felt Doctor Who has been superficial and shallow from near the end of Matt Smith's tenure, and I want the change that Moffat's departure indicates. New blood all around! Time to shake it up!

Very excited for the 13th doctor being a woman! However, I'm mostly excited about Moffat being gone. He had some good episodes under Davies, but as a lead, the whole series was not that great for me. I'm looking forward to Chibnall's direction of the series.

I for one welcome our new female Timelord!

Shut up, I know it's supposed to be "Timelady", but you know as well as me that that joke wouldn't work that way.

What have capaldi's seasons been like? I stopped watching after the first episode but that was a long time coming, not anything to do with him.

It's good that they've finally done this but not sure I can bring myself to go back to the show without an improvement in the writing

Please...don't return to "glory days." Doctor Who has never reached it's full potential, and looking back, recycling villains and such, has been one of it's greatest weaknessses. I am damn happy with this announcement and I'm ready for Doctor Who to move forward.

She said she wanted The Doctor Falls to be her ending, she sees 3 years as a good run for the character and time for someone else to have a go. Of course, John Simms said much the same thing after he originally "left" but unless Chinball comes up with a storyline that grabs her, it ain't happening.

I hope they go back to the "slight hints at the finale" instead of the "hey guys the finale's gonna be some crazy shit lets remind you every other minute" of the later series.

...now all I saw of Season 10 was the last two episodes so it may not have been like this but the whole fixation with continuity is what pushed me away from the show in the first place.

He's consistently excellent. Heaven Sent is essentially a one man performance and he carries it brilliantly.

The episodes themselves are all over the place. A lot of good ones, a couple truly excellent ones, but many are just ok or missed potential.

One thing I love the most is that the mold is now shattered.

Anyone can grow up and know they can be The Doctor.

That's the problem I have with the whole thing. Despite the regeneration there is a sense of continuity with the character that underlies each variation in personality. Some actors are better than others in recognising that, with Matt Smith being especially convincing in conveying the weight of history that the Doctor carries with him.

If those elements can be continued then I have no problem with it. But "shattering the mould"? No...
