Hey guys, I'm looking to build a PC for my aunt. It's for general use, but also some gaming @1080p, and probably some streaming to a Steam Link box. I want to keep it at a cool $1,000 USD.

Here's what I picked out, and I'm looking for suggestions.

Originally, I had the Gigabyte GTX 1060 Windforce for ~$230, but it sold out already, so I'm in a bit of a pickle on that front.

I'd definitely go with Ryzen. The 1600 is a little more expensive, but is the way better CPU, especially long term (12 vs. 4 threads). + you could think about not spending those extra $30 for the cooler. The 1600 comes with a decent-ish cooler, that is actually very quiet unless under almost full load. It's enough to do some mild overclocking, too (3.7-3.8 Ghz).
Also definitely get that faster RAM that the poster two posts after yours recommended.

Need some advice guys.

I am doing a lot of research on trying to build my first gaming PC. Mining really screw us up, but yesterday I was able to buy this card from Amazon for $380

It sold out within an hour. Will only ship in 1 to 2 weeks, so I have some time to decide.
The lowest price at Amazon was $ 364 in December 2016, so I guess the price was good

1. Any feedback about this particular card?
2. Should I wait a bit longer for black Friday, hoping the supply will be better.
3. Should I wait for 1080 price drop?
4. This was my first conponent bought, lol, so if I am keeping it I have to start buying the other stuff

1060 6GB is about as fast as a GTX 980 (980 is faster at very high overclocks though). The 1060 3GB is about 10-15% slower than the 6GB variant, but the real problem are the 3GB of VRAM.

Humm. I can get the RX580 8GB for 30~ cheaper than the 1060 6GB.

How does the RX580 compare to the 1060 6GB?

I've been leaning towards getting a 7700k. I like to future-proof when I build new computers (usually so they last me many years before the next upgrade), and while this is a great CPU spec-wise, all the talk and articles about overheating problems have me really hesitant and reluctant to pull the trigger on one.

And Intel's response to the issues left me really wary of committing to them this time around. :/

For reference, I am generally an enthusiast builder, dropping $1000-2000 on a new computer when I do end up building one. That being said, I don't find myself overclocking things, pretty much ever. I do like having the option available to me if I decide to somewhere down the road, but generally I just find myself not thinking about it.

So all that being said, is the 7700k still a good buy, or should I look at other processors?

If it's primarily for gaming then I'd be looking toward the Coffee Lake 6 core anyways. If it is production or similar, look at the Ryzen stuff.

That being said, the 7740x and 7800x seem like they would be great purchases as well. Hmm, that's good to hear! I was going to buy an aftermarket cooler for sure even if i don't intend on OC'ing immediately. My Hyper 212 EVO from like.. 5 years ago is still putting in work on my 2500k . Though it seems like Noctua is one of the go-to brands nowadays though?

I been looking at benchmarks and can't really see a difference between a 1060 6GB and a RX580 besides the 1060 performing better slightly with less memory.

It is the 8GB. I am just wanting 60 FPS for everything at high @ 1080. The benchmarks show that the 1060 still gets better performance.

Depends on the game and on the API. If you want to save a couple of bugs get the 580 over the 1060. Both are considered 1080p/60 cards. If you want better performance get a high end 1060 like the asus strix and overclock it to 2000+ MHz. If you want to play it save get a 1070.

MSI Afterburner/RTSS is an easy and common solution. It is also a nice screenshot tool and you can configure it to your liking. You can also combine HWinfo with RTSS to get even more values.

Imo the 7700k is still a good buy. It's running ridiculously hot, because Intel is cheap. That's not gonna be much of an issue for you if you don't overclock. If you do OC though, you'll need a very good (read: also expensive) cooler.

You could also go with Ryzen, though. It's not bad for gaming at all. The 1700 is currently like 10 or 15% slower than the 7700k, but that might very well change in the coming years (more cores/threads tend to perform better compared to fewer cores/threads over time; e.g. Core2Duo vs. Core2Quad). You can see that there is lots of potential if you compare utlizitation graphs, i.e. Ryzen is way lower compared to the i7-7700k.

If you go with the 1700, you'd definitely have to take a look at overclocking, though. The base clock (and boost clock on all cores) speed is a pretty low on the 1700, but you should be able to overclock it to sth. like 3.8-4.0 Ghz.

I think the next Nvidia GPUs are rumored for early next year. I don't think there's an official date though.

I know that keeping up with the jones' is a fool's errand but I also worry that whatever I get will be made irrelevant if the xbox one x comes out and is more powerful in the ensuing PC ports. All I really care about is playing at 1080p. Any suggestions?

I don't need anything super crazy, I just want to be able to play Battlegrounds and have it look pretty sexy. I also don't want to go through the hassle of building one, so something premade would be good.

Just make sure it has a good cooler, unless you don't mind heat/noise/performance throttling.

I'd go 1060 if it's very close in price, unless you have a freesync monitor or need 8GB of vram. (I have a 1060)

20$ USD +/- with the 580 being cheaper. I am curently on a 2GB card. Which is enough for the most part...may stick with nvidia though.

If you can wait, Nvidia's next series of cards should arrive sometime at the end of the year, if just as a paper launch. AMD's higher-end Vega cards are also incoming. I had a 670 but chose to upgrade because the 1060 went on sale for $210 shortly after release.

Upgrade GPU, yep. Possibly buy some more RAM, though that'll be died to an ageing platform. PUBG admittedly isn't the most well optimised thing, but something like a GTX 1060 would help substantially.

...Might be easier to picked up a used 970.

If you want to play at 1440p then yeah you'll probably need the 1080. As for new GPUs, all we know is that they're between 09/2017 and 03/2018.

The Rx580 is 10-15% faster, but you'll get a huge increase out of freesync. Problem is right now all the currency miners have driven GPU prices through the roof, IF you can find one you're going to be paying an extreme price. VEGA is due to be announced within a few weeks I believe, either way you're stuck waiting.

My current Plex server is just on an old Windows desktop PC with two hard drives that I use SyncBack to copy files from one to the other once per day. I'd like to find something that would run well and would allow for additional storage. Thinking of moving it to Linux.

If you only care about playing at 1080p then you're probably fine with a 1060 and the XBX is more powerful than that.

You can get a GTX 1080 but that's overkill for 1080p. So you understand the dilemma here.

7600K is perfectly fine.

I've thought about buying a NAS, but it seems like an expense I don't need since I have a machine that's capable of it now. I'd love to just get a NAS, but I would want one that has room for more than two drives, which isn't cheap. :|

That NAS cost could be two 8TB hard drives instead.

An XBX won't be dishing out 60+FPS like a half decent PC can, so it won't be making anything obsolete unless you really, really value 4K/checkerboard.

A 6Gb GTX 1060/8Gb RX 580 paired with an i5 or R5 would outclass the XBX for playing at 1080p.

Yeah, I've had a 7700k for a few weeks now and it's been totally fine. But the most load it's seen has been with PUBG -- I've never stress tested it. I use the H7 cooler. Definitely happy with both.

Isn't PUBG like still early access or something? Performance issues likely aren't on the player's side.
