Secret of Mana Remake (PC/Vita/PS4, February 15th, 2018) Trailer

Looks exactly how I envisioned it. I like it. It's incredibly faithful to the SNES artwork, except in 3D :), even if it's a low-budget effort, there's a lot of heart put into this. Can't wait to get my hands on this!

Hopefully it's less 1:1 than Adventure of Mana was though, SoM has quite a few bugs that need fixin'. Also excited to see what the new translation's like.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
People who love Secret of Mana, how does it compare to Ys Oath / Origin?

Boss fights, difficulty and combat systems?

Always seems rather slow and dull to me.

They are quite different despite both being action adventures. Mana is larger, a bit more freeform(somewhat open world in dungeon order, to a minor degree), a slew of weapons and magic to wield for three characters(also co-op).

Combat had issues though. Hit detection was roughshod. Special attacks required charging by holding a button down that grows tedious. Grinding a bit necessary for certain skills/magic(level skills with use like Skyrim). Bosses were impressive but had specific weakness requirements and weren't very flexible in approach. Ys is more polished here, but far more condensed.

Regardless, it's a wondrous game. The adventure is memorable and filled with great enemies and the music is some of the best chip tunes ever produced.

Not digging how the 2d translates to 3d here. It certainly looks accurate, but it looks too chibi/cute/kiddy for my taste.

2d for life yo.

The original game is extremely buggy. It's high on my list of games that need a remake just to be playable with peace of mind.
It'll also be nice to play a version of the game where the melody channels in the music don't cut out to play sound effects.

That's actually possible to do on emulator these days, I think someone made an MSU-1 patch with the original music so sound effects wouldn't constantly mess the awesome music up. If they haven't, someone should make one. But it's at least theoretically possible.

I screamed.
I audibly screamed.
I woke up everyone in the house.
I don't give a shit.
Holy fuck.
Legend of the Holy Fuck
Day negative one.
Seiken 3 after this, but it needs to do well.
In for Steam.

Don't even mind the voice acting.
We're finally getting a new translation.
The bosses in 3D.
The music remastered.
More people will be able to play this incredible game.
This is the right attitude to have.

Pretty surprised at the first page's negative reaction to the art style. I think it looks fucking great! This is way out of left field and I'm totally digging it. Can't wait and not long to wait either!

The original game was extremely vibrant and full of color and life. These bland, low-poly visuals don't really capture the spirit of the original or look good on their own merits. I mean... there's more detail and realism in the original SNES version:

Look at the care put into the shading on that pixel art to make the architecture look rounded and deep, now look at how flat and plain the actual 3D version looks in comparison. Details like the keystones in the arches are also missing, and the way those bricks awkwardly wrap along that bottom corner is pretty lazy. It just looks cheap as hell and doesn't do justice to the quality of the original art.

The screenshot of the old version is honestly hard to look at. It's blurry and contrary to what you say looks a lot more flat than the new version, to the point where elevation is extremely hard to gauge.

Crazy how polarizing the game is already just from the art style. I don't know.... I think it's kinda nice even if simple.

I like it, even if the low poly models make my eyes bleed a little. Will it still have the wonkiest hit boxes ever designed in a game like the original?

Honestly, I'll buy it, but when it's $20.

I'm a little disappointed to see this, knowing that Grezzo and Brownies (studios with Mana pedigree) have both made games with much better looking 3D aesthetics. They should have contracted one of them instead of the Adventures of Mana team.

Is there something extremely offensive about Seiken 3 that's keeping it from coming West? Like with Mother 3 & the Magypsies?

I was hoping for a more invested upgrade but I think this looks pretty cool regardless. I loved this game in snes so I'm definitely looking forward to this.

They should throw some cel shading on this to make it look a bit better

Something like this would have been very well-suited.

Did you play the iOS version? They added frames to magic spells so you can't spam, but they completely broke physical attacks. Evade is through the roof so most attacks miss. As opposed to SNES where hit detection was wonky but at least when you landed a hit it didn't miss 90% of the time.

No, I grew up with the SNES cartridge. Replayed it just last month and, man, I like it but the game has issues.

Day 1 on the Vita for me.

Really had fun with Adventures of Mana on the Vita last year. I imagine this will be better!

That's a terrible call to make in SoM! Not leveling up your magic leaves you incredibly underleveled when you genuinely need it for bosses that can only be hurt by magic.

Let the magic carry you!

Nah, magic spamming made the game way too easy. So I just stopped using it.

I would have prefered a new (good) Mana game.

Not interested, honestly. Secret of Mana is a gem that didn't really need to be polished. While I appreciate the Goldsmith's work, I'd rather see him making new treasures, assuming he still has the skill to do that.

I am also partial to 2D. The SNES had some fantastic games on it, and nowadays there are quite a couple great games which exalt 2D.

I think it looks great, though I never was able to play the original version despite wanting to. Either way I'm always excited for more cute/colorful RPGs with good music

if the animation is as bad as the last mana game they shit out on vita then no thanks. Sometimes just a couple sprites and swooshes is so much more expressive then bland tweened models

I think I might be getting this on PC. Someone should be able to mod in some proper shading to make it pop a bit more. It just looks so flat. Just look at what proper shading did to FFXII, and it's eady to see how this game could be much prettier without too much work.

I just bought an snes multitap too. But I do like the snes visuals more than here. Nice that it's getting a remake though.
