Is there an anime/manga that you think Hollywood can get right?

Personally, I'm not against Hollywood adapting anime. The problem is that out of all the adaptations we've gotten, most of them were terrible. There are a number of factors to consider, but I think there are some adaptations that they can get right.

One genre that would be hard to fuck up is the western, so I think an adaptation of Trigun could actually work.

But that's just one that popped up in my head. I don't think I trust Hollywood with some of the more bizzare stuff like Jojo.

What are your suggestions?

Attack on Titan.

It is effects-heavy. Story is relatively straightforward and is attractive to teens. Whole cast is White except for one. Perfect for Hollywood.

Didn't Hollywood already "get it right" when they adapted All You Need Is Kill into Edge of Tomorrow?
And yeah, I think they could do Attack on Titan justice.

Darker than Black - it should be easy to do using Hollywood superhero movie assembly line since it would be similar to one (except not crappy story).

Cowboy Bebop-Keanu might be too old now but he's also in pretty good form after the Wick movies.

Ghost in the Shell-Yea I still think it can be done correctly without too much difficulty.

Monster-That's sort of cheating but eh. Shame that the HBO series didn't go anywhere.

The source material was a light novel, not an anime or manga.

I would've said Ghost in the Shell would be easy. It's a cyberpunk cop procedural in futuristic Japan.

They still fucked that one up royally.

Mobile Suit Gundam

0079 can be splitted in three movies.

Is an Space Odissey with drama and war. With just one Japanese character and boast a diverse cast from all over the world.

It has:

Space ships
Giant robots
Giant-ass lazer guns
Machine guns with bullets
Beam sabers
Romance
Plenty of drama
High bodycount
Little comedy
Lots of charismatic and iconic characters

Gundam.

I think that Gundam is one of the few things that could have a chance if done right. I think the realistic nature of the story, the characters, the costume design, and even the grounded design of many of the mechs themselves would lend itself to a live-action film well. If I had to place my bets, it'd be on Gundam.

Any of them could work, the right people and studio just have to be behind it.

The down side with a lot of Executive Producers and the bigger studios is that they have a lot of control and don't properly give the crew the creative freedom a project like an anime adaptation would require. Things get focus tested and cut to pieces and rearranged in editing.

Smaller, newer studios like A24 seem to give their directors and writers pretty much total freedom, so I could see things like an adaptation of the crazier stuff working from them.

They got the visuals down at least. The big problem was that they turned it into a basic cop action flick with a horribly tone-deaf twist.

Speed Racer already got it right breh.

I actually liked Speed Racer just fine. I really don't get the hate for that film in particular. Heavy on the CG? Sure, but that doesn't make it terrible.

This, but Star Wars and Star Trek need to be put back in a coma first.

Fullmetal Alchemist. It's already a majority white cast, and it's a straight forward story that isn't too "anime". Would be amazing.

Also, Fate/Zero. Adult cast, mix of ethnicities, mythical heroes, action, and I need to fucking see Keanu Reeves as Kiritsugu before he's too old

I think Macross could be done with the right director. The real problem is Harmony Gold still exists... otherwise, I think the populace would eat up a space action movie filled with pop music.

I always thought Gundam has way more meat than Star Wars and Star Trek.

More characters, more stories to tell, more vehicles, expanded timeline, etc etc.

But some people might see Gundam as a "Star Wars rip-off" if it gets on the theaters :(

A lot of the popular animated would be awful live action. You need Akira, Paprika, Ghibli, etc stuff to work because it's dialogue, themes, etc match the visuals. You look at stuff like Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and the other big series and you notice it's very child-like while showing more visually serious things. They don't sync well and it would be even worse in live action.

Fullmetal Alchemist wouldn't work. The protags are kids who have the depth of whatever teenage thoughts they have and it's generally simple thoughts where they shout friendship or "MY DAAAAAAAAD!" -- it's not particularly interesting dialogue. The kid angle always ruins it unless they're written well which the generic action fantasy series do not do well. The adults have it better in the show but it's not centered around them.

Is it bad that I'd rather see an 08th MS Team movie? lol

It'd be like a Vietnam war flick but with giant robots!

I think they could manage My Hero Academia. The first season could be adapted pretty easily into the three act structure. Powerless Deku, Entrance Exam, USJ. Maybe trim the fat with the side characters, add some Shigaraki depth and you've got yourself an underdog story made for film, in my opinion.

Also, inb4 Sky High.

Hollywood doesn't respect the medium enough to get it right. If they did, there are plenty of anime they could do justice.

I don't think it's a problem of it being perceived as a rip-off (although the franchise borrows a bunch of SW stuff, right down to the music, so it's to be expected), but rather the risk of oversaturation of space opera stuff like the YA and fantasy novel era in the past 15 years, as well as the fact that no shit SW and ST are going to eclipse its performance.

This is the only thing that comes to mind, and I'm still not 100% certain they wouldn't find a way to screw up something that easy too.

I'm not particularly convinced that UC Gundam would be any more successful than something like Pacific Rim as far as giant robot films go (likely less, given the lack of interest American anime viewers already have in it specifically, as it doesn't seem like it would resonate with mainstream moviegoers either).

Basically. Same problem with video game films, too.

Not really. I can't think of a single thing they would get right when something like Ghost in the Shell happened the way it did.

Honestly, the space-western stuff would translate really will to live action, I'm surprised Hollywood hasn't pulled the trigger on any of them yet. Trigun, Outlaw Star and Bebop would be great!
