This should be a happy thread about Samus Returns. Why are we discussing FF![]()
Say what you want about Other M, but it at least had the basic principles of exploration, powerup collecting, and atmosphere that the series is based on. It didn't execute any of them well and subjugated them in favor of storytelling, but it had them. Federation Force didn't even attempt to base itself off any of those things.

Because I will give everyone whining about OM and FF shit in the OT where that crap has no business. We're doing it now so everyone can get it out of their system and we can talk about the actual new game in the OT.

That's a pretty good amount. Seems significantly longer than Zero Mission.Took me 7 to finish at any%
You know what bugs me?![]()
Other M is just one long corridor and all the new abilities are awarded to you via scripted FMVs. Compared to Super and Prime it's embarrassingly crude.
I couldn't finish Other M but was there actually a purpose to making Samus feel so weak and submissive? In Fusion the whole story was centered on Samus being a shell of her former self and actually running and hiding from the unstoppable force she used to be, so Adam giving orders and making Samus seem weak felt ok in context. Did Other M have any justification at all?

I don't think all the barbed comments towards Sakamoto are fair in the sense that ok Other M was a misstep but it tried a bunch of different (albeit whack) things. More importantly from the info about how Nintendo weren't interested in Mercury Steam's Metroid pitch until Sakamoto got wind of it and then went to Spain to check it out, I'm not sure we would even be getting Samus Returns without Sakamoto. And it looks like it has a strong influence from the 2D games as well as an influence from the Prime series.
Sakamoto's role in keeping the series alive through specific periods of its history has been fundamental and he's done an amazing work in most games he's directed, no doubt. But the one game he both produced and directed is filled with misogynistic undertones and the game design is at odds with itself due to insisting on applying gameplay elements that were obviously not going to work. This game turned the series into a joke and effectively killed the franchise for almost a decade.
There's a lot of made up stuff about him that's kinda ridiculous, but I can't feel sorry for a guy like that. I have difficulty feeling sympathy for stubborn, low key sexist old men, no matter how good they're at making games.
I just want to be happy 😣^^^
We are getting a good new Metroid game soon, lets be happy dammit
Seriously. 9 DAYSI'm feeling the hype. Can't wait to pick up my new "new" 3ds and game. I'm taking for granted the fact that we are all here chillin days ahead of a new metroid game release.
I hope it sells well. Metroid has always been weird, because I feel like it should sell more than it should. Yet sales fall off and you end up with these droughts for whole console generations
For the 2d games, super sold okay, but fusion didn't going by gba standards. Zero mission sold even worse at under a million.
Prime 1 sold good, especially by gamecube standards. Prime 2 sold, but still okay for the gamecube. Prime 3 really didn't sell good for the wii though. So you look at zero mission as the last 2d game and prime 3 as the last prime both being the least selling in their sub series...and yea.
Prime 1 didn't just sell good, it's the best selling Metroid game to date.
Seriously. 9 DAYS
For metroid it's the best, but if you are comparing it to other series, it's obviously not spectacular. A little under 3 million for the gamecube was solid.
Metroid is a predominantly single player series about navigating a complex and often obtuse environment. So it's not that surprising.I hope it sells well. Issue with Prime 3 sales was that the Wii install base was far larger than the GameCube. So despite it selling more than Prime 2, the gains felt minimal despite a potential wider audience
Maybe it's just a tough sell to casual consumer.

And the first Metroid drought wasn't really due to sales (Super Metroid sold pretty alright) so much as nobody having a clue what to do with the series.
Fusion sold over a million and a half copies. That's fine going by GBA standards if your name isn't Pokemon. For the 2d games, super sold okay, but fusion didn't going by gba standards.
Metroid PrimeI saw this trailer a few weeks ago and it has peaked my interest in the series, so to start off with, I'm currently playing Metroid Fusion and then moving onto Zero Mission. Let me just say, I cannot believe I missed out on this great franchise and Fusion, so far, has got me hooked with it's gripping atmosphere, great story telling, tight controls and gameplay and it's fantastic pixel art.
Can I ask what is everyone's top 5 Metroid games?

I expect this to sell less than a million copies.

1M would be a great success.
I don't know if they're trying to really push it but I've seen quite a bit of anticipation for this irl.
It shouldn't do too bad.
If we're doing estimates ourselves I'd expect something like 800k or in ranking I'd say between Fusion and Zero Mission.
If it blows expectations and sell more than they expected, I hope you like that aesthetic because you're gonna get even more of that for a while.
Hopefully we finally get rid of Other M's horrible model for the next Smash.
Feels like it's the most fun to play on Hard mode too.
