After completing the story I got to say it's...Destiny. Go here...shoot some aliens...go to this other place that's feels like miles away and kill some more...etc... Yes, I expected that but I also wanted some imagination.
Earth's Dead Zone, Nessus and Io are expansive for no particular reason. The way these are populated is the same as the original...pockets of enemies that respawn. On occasion they meet and greet each other to a deathmatch. So what's new? Nothing. I get the sense they built these new, larger destinations because they could, not because they should. They feel like a technological achievement rather than something fresh to experience.
Destiny's original destinations are smaller, better formed and a lot more characterful. Comparing Earth shows how much more mysteriously curios the original feels to be in. Proper adventures without the need for an Adventure beacon to show you the way. Glorious. This new Earth Dead Zone now is, bar technical achievements, about as bland and flat as you can get. It's just not fun exploring anymore.
Props for Nessus' design though. That's a treat. The jewel in the crown by a wide margin.
They haven't learnt the lesson about the social space either. The Farm was dross. The new social space at the end-game is big and messy. Why does it need to be so bloody big and complex? It's an infuriating design choice that means it takes an age to do anything.
Overall, the mystery in Destiny has gone. It's mindless. Everything is handed to the player on a plate. The whole story was done without wincing. Events are no longer a surprise and feel useless past a particular Power level. Weapons and Armour have set abilities (mods aren't a direct replacement for perks). There's no excitement to revealing Legendary and Exotic Engrams anymore.
The only redeeming factors are...the Strikes seem pretty good and there's one 220 Power Adventure that felt like a discovery...Arecibo. Why can't the rest of the game be so revealing? The rest is excruciatingly dull.
PvP's player restrictions are horrid too. Why can't I choose what I want to play? Why limit map design to favour Assault Rifles or other close range weapons? There's hardly any need for Scout Rifles, let alone Sniper Rifles because the maps are so small across the board. I've got no idea what the design logic is here. Why give me Boots that boost speed and jumping? That would of been really handy in the original Destiny's PvP mode.
The change to 4v4 means there's little strategy involved now. Think about flanking...nope. Team rush means you have no chance. It's a horrible place to play.
I'd love to see the old destinations bolted on to what we have now. I'd love to see the old PvP choices return. I'd love to see the old PvP maps return. Let me run and play free.
I'm so disappointed. It's too 'the same as' and it's more restrictive than ever.
