You should join a clan. The larger the clan the better, as you get rewards for the contributions of others.
It's a day before the reset so just do whatever you can, even the powerful gear miletones. Actually, I have been playing that way all along (just playing the game, doing the milestones presented to me as it seemed more fun to me that way), and I'm up to 266 now, without applying +5 mods. The leveling guides are intended for people who wanted to maximize their power level in the first week. The general idea was to save the powerful gear rewards until you hit 265 by doing public events and such, and acquiring legendaries to get to 265 - but again, things reset tomorrow, so at this point, you might as well do them now....unless my understanding is wrong?
Neither a fanboy nor someone that wants to hate Destiny. I had tons of hours in Destiny 1 and have lot's of fun memories with friends in that game. But like everyone else, I felt like it had tons of unrealized potential. I went into Destiny 2 with a 'prove it to me Bungie' attitude.
And even with that attitude, I loved the first few moments/missions of the campaign. While it was just a TINY bit overkill in the very beginning with
the constant pulsing notification that you have no health
it was great to
wander around these places and have a stealth component added.
Great way to mix things up from the usual formula. I REALLY wish this part of the campaign went on longer. I know most people wouldn't like
spending too much time in a campaign without their light
, but a LITTLE bit more of this would have been appreciated.
As an added benefit,
hearing the ghost without the light was the only time in the game where I actually wanted to listen to him.
I'll expand more on this in a second.
However, the only other part of the campaign I enjoyed was the very end, mainly because of the skyboxes and atmosphere. Like many people have said, the final fight was a joke, and really the whole campaign was shockingly easy. Most of the middle of the campaign was the usual Destiny mission design without any more creativity. It's like they put a bunch of effort into the beginning, ran out of ideas/time, and resorted to filler for the middle.
Here's the other thing that bothered me, and probably bothered me the most. The dialogue.
Yes, I know Bungie directed the writers to make a script that could be understood by literally anybody the picks up the game. I have no problem at all with a developer making their game accessible to everyone. If they want a story that can be understood by a 7 year old and a 70 year old, no problem.
But there have been plenty of times where we have seen a movie, a television show, a book, and even a video game that can be easily enjoyed by any age group; a film where people leave saying it's 'fun for everyone' with characters that can make you laugh whether your 10 years old or 100 years old.
Bungie needs to hire writers that can accomplish that. There's difference between writing that can be enjoyed by everyone, and writing that will make 90% of the people listening to it cringe, and cringe hard. Destiny 2 is absolutely PACKED with cringe dialogue. And the saddest part of that, is that it applies to your ghost as well. Outside of the beginning of the game
where the ghost struggles without the light
listening to him interact with the world was a chore.
As you know, your ghost is the only source of emotion and reaction to the world of Destiny for your own character, since your character never speaks. So, it's up to your ghost to react for you. And what a shame it is to have your source of reacting to the world around you wasted with horrible writing, to the point where you just would rather the ghost shut up entirely.
Stories in Destiny can be told in various ways for every age group, but it's clear that the writers on board at the moment are not capable of doing so. For Destiny 3, I hope they find better talent.
I can't comment yet on the endgame routine yet until I, for starters, actually reach the end game and can experience the raid. The raid is what had me coming back every week with my friends, as well as the nightfall, record book stuff, other end game material, etc. So, we'll see if this ends up hooking me like previous Destiny content.
But as for my thoughts on the campaign: a few flavorful bright spots that are eventually overpowered with the sour Destiny pitfalls of uninspired mission design and irritating dialogue.
I kind of liked the ghost, but he seems a little more energetic than I remember from the first game. When he was dinkle he was very stale and robotic, when he first got reformed he was a bit whimsical and inquisitive. Now he has a wise crack for almost everything, and while it may be cringy sometimes, depending on my mood, I'd say that the dial was pushed a bit too far but for the better overall. I think that grinding out missions in this game I'd prefer the goofiness just so I'm not hearing that same stale neutral line over and damn over.
I mean look at the direction they took Shaxx, in vanilla he sounded like he was bored, in this he's a combat fanatic. As much as I hate pvp in this the lines actually get me to play the mode. Its silly, so even if you have a bad match there's something there to nudge at you to just enjoy yourself.
The dialogue does change in strikes so its not the same everytime so I enjoy that they are trying to help ease the grind as much as possible. I don't think they were going for full blown quality as much as they were setting the mood of the game.
I don't expect the writing to be that great, it never was even in Halo, but I at least aspect to be entertained, by the cringiness, by the outrageousness, it sets the mood of the game for me I guess. I don't take it seriously, that chance died with D1
You can re-run it and farm the end chest, I think even the boss can drop an engram. You won't get the big game loot at the end though, that's only once per week.
What's the quickest PL method? Can I just grind any destination? GraveRobber mentioned he did that with EDZ for 8 hours. Or should I just follow the objectives the game is feeding me?
What determines the PL of rewards, though? Is it random or is it based on your current gear?
I just got The Wardcliff Coil with PL 236 out of the blue. (I got showered with engrams and rewards from everyone upon arriving at the Tower.)
Also, how can I view the rewards per zone NPC?
I remember liking the look of Sloane's armor, but I can't preview it anymore.
Thanks for this Dez, good to know we can still help new people out when they get to this point in the game. I hated the thought of that exotic being locked away for some folks.
Hope to catch you in orbit sometime man, hope all is well on your end. If you need some bodies to help finish that quest, let me know.
Appreciate it man. Still on opposite time zones these days, making it tough to line up times to play with you guys, but I'm always down to help out when I can. I'm glad that the quest isn't so specific (like say Outbreak Prime), but for the record, both the other two people in my group already had the exotic. I didn't, and I was able to make progress thankfully.
They seem to be on a higher level, but the rewards seem to be no different than other activities as far as I can tell. Since I've been starting to work on my second character, I didn't go through too many replay missions, to avoid getting burned out. Weirdly enough, I got an exotic engram while doing a regular adventure mission I was trying to clean up, so I guess it could happen there too? You also get rep tokens that you can redeem.
Just got an exotic from a public event, guess I'll save it for when I start the Sturm quest in a few minutes. I'll just do strikes for legendaries I think.
Yeah, that's how I had been using it, and like I said, I think the weapon's pretty good. It seems to have a similar DPS and damage per ammo rate as good legendary swords and snipers when they're at optimum range, while being usable at a wider amount of ranges (and also requiring less kill than snipers and opening yourself to less danger than swords).
But for "best weapon in the game" I would expect something clearly better, though not dramatically so, than the other options. Merciless doesn't really feel to me like Gjallahorn did - and I know that's an impossible bar to clear, but it doesn't really feel like Y3 Mida either. It just feels really solid.
I dunno, I've heard they've made exotics much less impactful this time around, so maybe that's it?

Only people hyping up Sunshot are people who haven't tried Riskrunner. You literally have unlimited ammo in these Fallen events (always get shot by something Arc)

If you highlight the proposed engram (at the top) from each NPC, it will show you the power level of each, and you can hit details to view what it might be. This number is based on your max potential power level (the game sees what you have, not just what you have equipped).
Like I said, at this point, you can just play whatever you'd like. The milestones will reset tomorrow. There are many ways to level up, which is kind of the beauty of this game. Naturally, some are more time effective than others - strikes for example, probably take too long compared to other things with similar rewards (unless you're doing the two strikes milestone).
I think Bungie hotfixed the legendary mods in some way and now the game doesn't take into account gear with a plus five legendary mod. Like the exotics.
They got once again played out by the community and tried to block the rain of 280-290s players popping up on reddit.
Right now I'm getting 266 blues and 266 legendaries from legendary engrams. Which makes no sense, right?
Basically the rares' RNG takes into account your maximum level, no matter if it's set by the exotics, while the legendaries' RNG takes into account your maximum level minus the exotics because all of them have a plus 5 mod.
I hope I can get a 267 rare and a 266 legendary from vendors so I can troll Bungie on Reddit.
Granted Deej is going to say, everything is working as intended...
100% this. I think people are dismissing it because it's a vanguard weapon... but it is great for PvE. Used it for the nightfall and laughed in the enemies faces.
I'm just waiting for something to infuse into it so I can use it again.

lol and it begins. Honestly, yes there is more "to do" in the areas but i hope they actually fixed the problem of actual content, like areas. That was my biggest issue with D1. The areas got old real fast and im worried the same will happen here.

Honestly the Vanguard weapons seem like the highest "tier" of legendaries in D2, whereas in Destiny they were more about the first legendaries you were going to get from the vendor. The AR and higher ROF PR kinetics in the Vanguard set are also probably the best weapons I've found in those weapon classes.

Playing in german so it could be difficult to translate into english.
Lemme explain:
There are 2-3 ways to complete this strike. The Standard way is simple.
Every each guardian has to set up the elements correctly. This means for an example:
Guardian A has void as focus, B has solar and C has Arkus.
This means Guardian A should have the middle weapon as Solar or Arkus and the third weapon as Solar or Arkus. The others should do the same. Always be award which element is active, you can see them below your super display.
For an example. If void is active, all guardians has to select their void weapons and kill as many as they can do. Always use the grenades and super only if your element is active.
And another thing. Use Man O' War! This is the perfect way and the weapon is clearly overpowered!
Another way I've discovered is, all 3 guardians can select the same focus (i.e Void)
If Void is active and you're in front of the boss, all have to activiate their focus and do as much damage as you can do. We've killed the half of his life just using our supers in the right moment.
I hope I was able to help you
Haha, it's just that it's kinda difficult for me to play in a group since I can't speak english and also I feel like I'm not versed enough in the game, since you guys go for complicated endgame stuff and I just enjoy shooting things and finding weapons with green arrows. Have no idea what milestones are and I used some of the medals or whatever to level-up the reputation, so now I'm wondering if I ruined the game and I gotta start over.
I actually joined a XB1 Clan and have no idea how it works.

If you're not hurrying to raid the day it drops like a lot of people, you're better off just relaxing and enjoying the ride. You'll get to ~265 pretty easily by just doing your thing and equopping the blues and occasional purple that come along as you patrol, do strikes, do public events, or do crucible (the last is the least efficient, but I found it fun for a change of pace).
Lots of your progression will come from faction reputation. Instead of getting it automatically, you get tokens from doing various stuff. Public events will get you one token, strikes will get you like 4, lost sectors will get you 2, I think, crucible matches get you one win or lose, etc. Get 20-25 of these and turn them in to the appropriate NPC, and you'll get a legendary drop, up to 265 light. (You can trade in weapon parts to the gunsmith for a similar effect).
The people who were trying to grind for max level before the raid suggest that you hang onto these faction package until you've maxed out what you can do with blues, but I disagree. You'll increase your light level faster and get even more loot if you cash them in around your PL. Saving them makes sense if you're trying to boost yourself to take maximum advantage of the limited number of luminous engram awards at the end of the progression, but if you're going to be spreading it over the next few weeks you don't need to do that.
About those luminous engrams: they're the highest level rewards you can get now. For now, you can get them by doing the crucible, flashpoint, nightfall, and clan milestones. You can do these milestones only once a week, and the weekly reset is tomorrow. You'll want to save these until the end of the week, after you're at 260-265, because these endgame rewards are the only ones that go higher than that.
There are also a series of quests on each planet that end with a legendary and split off into another quest that ends with an exotic. They'll be on your map. Like the luminous engrams, these are some of your few opportunities to get 265+ gear, so save those quests until you're at that level.

I'ts impossible to ruin the game in any way, so don't worry about that. You also don't have to say anything when grouped up, as long as you can follow directions. No one here will care If you were on PS4 I'd be happy to group up for stuff with you.
A couple of other very good legendaries I've been using and ones to look out for:
- Lincoln Green Pulse Rifle (Very good for PvP, decent PvE)
- Scathelocke Auto Rifle (Very good and fun to use for PvE)
- Origin Story Auto Rifle (Large mag, damage buff, manageable recoil)
- First In Last Out Shotgun (Very capable single slug shotgun)
- Nameless Midnight Scout Rifle (Awesome tier, PvP & PvE)
- Nergal P4 (name might be wrong?) (full auto, energy, great all around stats)

Strikes are fun, but not the most time efficient means of leveling up beyond 20. Neither is the Crucible. Things like public events are better as they are quick - generally, just do things in each area to get tokens to level up factions and get legendaries. Also, open your Director, and hit L2 to check milestones. You'll get some high level gear from that. They reset tomorrow, so feel free to go crazy with them now.
