PewDiePie calls someone a "fucking n****r" during PUBG livestream

But the argument I'm seeing is that sometimes people just blurt out the n word in public by accident and it doesn't mean someone is racist.
Yea I just...I wish I could resolve in my mind how someone conjures up racial epithets when impassioned. Like, these words don't just come from nowhere. I've been here for 30+ years and the thought of calling someone a malicious racial epithet has never crossed my mind. It's just not a thing. So I guess I just wonder where else it could come from other than some sort of racist social conditioning that allows for and excuses these words. Like something taboo you say around your friends to look cool like when you first learned cuss words...but even after learning the meaning still using it? I just don't understand.

Philip DeFranco's take on it (haven't watched, but will now):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMq65CslbZA
Phil wouldn't even condemn that ShayCarl guy who admitted to cheating on his wife (with whom he has four/five children with) and abusing alcohol again despite being a recovering addict solely because they used to be good friends back in the day. I don't care if you're my brother or sister man, shit like Shay pulled or especially shit like PDP just pulled will get you on my shit list instantly and I don't care who knows it.

Nobody should softball this - PDP is a racist bigot and he has shown it time and time again. End of story.

anyone expecting old Philip "if you're not socially liberal and fiscially conservative you're insane" DeFranco to take a hard stance on this should really know better

that dude isn't worth the bandwidth it took to post this post

This is a good article, but I have to disagree with this point:

This attitude makes an unjustified assumption about who defines acceptable discourse. There are people out there who find acknowledging the existence of trans people as abhorrent as many of us find the n-word, and they have access to the exact same set of tools.

Anything that normalizes DMCA takedowns as a means of stifling someone who says something awful gives the "other side" cover to do the same thing back. And when a risk-averse institution that exists on ad sales is the ultimate arbiter, they're going to do what they do and err on the side of allowing censorship in order to quell controversy.

I dearly wish that everyone shared my sense of what is right and wrong to say online, but that isn't and won't ever be the case. I know that Campo Santo's intentions are golden, and I agree with them wholeheartedly that Felix is a piece of shit manchild, but the road to hell, etc.

I think this post could be misinterpreted, so let me say: this isn't both sides-ism. This is a realistic assessment of the political climate and the way media platforms work. YouTube doesn't apportion out the ability to use takedown requests just to the good guys, and even if they did, their definition of "good guy" could and would differ from mine or yours. As it stands, everybody gets to use the same tools.

I know that there is a separate thread for this discussion, but the Klepek piece was posted in this one, so I am responding here. I don't mean to derail, so mods, you can move this post or delete it or whatever if it was made in poor judgement.

Now to leave work and log off for several hours. If I don't respond to your reply, it's because I'm at home doing chores.

Couldn't you have at least drop your post when you have free time?

This seems like a chuck it and run type situation.

:(

Also that thread is here when you get back

God damn people just keep droppin' in this thread.

Beautiful use of that gif, it always brings out those hidden in the depths saying stupid shit.

Please...stop making that assumption.
Religion doesn't make them racist.

I am a minority for goodness sake.
The world is full of minority...religion is a global thing. Christianity doesn't just mean in America only.

You can't just "correlate" America right wings with all of us.
I am just saying that with religion, some of yall can interact with the community at large with ease and be surrounded with people who want to help.
But no, we are all right now typing and chatting online.
That is all I am saying. Yall just want to always want to bring down religion for no good reason...sigh.
Dude, almost all religious people in my country are intolerant people who hate the LGBTQ+ community. They prefer to protest on the streets so Same Sex Marriage doesn't become a reality here instead of protesting the Government corruption. And I'm sure if Whites were the majority here, they would also be racists too (they already are, but they prefer to not show that in public).

Sure, not all religious are racists and homophobic. Some are capable of opening their mind and accepting everyone. But usually, you hear and see that religious people are the intolerant ones, not the atheists.

We don't need religion on our life to be tolerant and accept others. All you need to be is not a prick, as easy as that.

Why do you like DeFranco? He's an alt-right douchebag parading as a "moderate," just like the rest.

I literally predicted this response from him like 100 pages ago.
He is definitely not an alt-right dude. He has VERY problematic agendas against the mainstream media (since he has a vested interest in creating his own network), but his stance on racial issues are "i've read about racism in a book before" at worst.

I've been watching him pretty closely, and it's really fascinating to watch his "pivot" away from his alt-right fans, post-JonTron. He was a very vocal defender of JonTron in general and then the "gene pool" stream happened, and Phil avoided the topic, took an entire week off from his show, and said he was dealing with something personal.

My guess is that the JonTron incident was a fcking wake up call to him about his circle of friends, and since then, he has been much quicker to condemn hate speech (much to the dismay of his alt-rate commenters)

This response from him doesn't surprise me tho, since he's so scared to label people and loves talking about free-speech issues. Was hoping is newer left-tilt would shine in this moment, but I guess I expected too much, sadly.

So how about the people who are making videos about video games don't give their opinions on anything else, along with just not being hateful? Why can't they just stick to the task at hand and just play the damn game. Dont use offensive words, especially racist ones but heck dont even give your opinion on these matters even if they are positive! If I'm watching a let's play (not that I do) I wouldn't care even if you are PRO black. Just stick to the task at hand.

Having said that though, it's got to the point where let's players have a lot of power and most companies are happy to let people stream their games so if you do get the odd one or two that takes a video down because someone is being pro black or pro whatever (seriously, this won't even happen) then let them. Move on to the next game.

Not to mention Philip DeFranco got famous as a tabloid channel. Remember the videos about Katy Perry's boobs? The guy is a chameleon. He transforms his channel and his image into whatever makes him the most money, and recently he's been going all in on alt-right dog whistling.

Because they are desperate for more attention.

Edgelords are the in-thing these days.

Lirik's hot take is basically that people get offended too easily now and both sides. Dr. Disrespect said that people are too sensitive and to "get over it". CobaltStreak doesn't care about what PDP said. Other than those, I haven't heard anything else.

Add to the list of not being a shitlord:

runJDrun - the son of John Witherspoon (pops from Friday, granddad from the Boondocks) needs a mention because the dude barely swears, plays a wide variety of games, and is just cool as shit.

I don't know how GAF feels about The Black Hokage and The Gaming Illuminaughty, but I think they're worth checking out.

Oh...well that's the last time I watch Dr Disrespect. Fuck that.

Yeah it's fair.
I do think a lot hangs on whatever Felix's next 'public statement' will be (and he damn well better say he's sorry). But I'm happy to entertain that maybe Felix isn't racist, just 1000% a big dumb kid with a terrible sense of humour and small and feeble understanding involved some of his world views -- something really unfortunate for someone of his mass appeal and popularity (somehow). It doesn't excuse him and if there's an advertising fallout because of his demeaning language (on more than one occasion) then fine. At this point, I think I'm more concerned about the people defending what was said than the person under heat for saying it; I feel THAT has sparked even uglier discourse about what some people think.
Some of you give PDP way too much benefit of the doubt. The dude is nearing 30, he's no kid. Don't infantilise it. Ironic racism is still racism. First, it was the rape jokes. Then it was alt right pandering. Then it was the 9 anti-semitic/Nazi videos. Now it's full blown racism, which he has no remorse for because "I know that no one who is watching this stream gives a shit".

Yet still some folks are waiting for something even worse so they can finally call him a racist. Does he need to beat up a black dude? It's ridiculous how high the bar is for some on what behaviour is deemed racist.

Wait, the ShayTards guy? So he gets rich from filming his family...and once he makes it big, cheats on his wife? Ha.

Saying all this in the context of rationalizing bigoted hatred is effectively the most un-Christian viewpoint one could espouse.

Your heart is in the right place, and I understand that you are disappointed at someone else using Christianity in a way you find disgusting, but at what point is brushing off detestable behaviour with "it's un-Christian" simply a "no true Scotsman" argument to paint Christianty in the best possible way? What authority makes you a "truer" Christian than him, especially considering the very common Christian belief that believing in Jesus does indeed make you better and worthier of being saved? If someone does charity work because they're Christian, and someone looks down on gay people because they're Christian, how is it impartial to add the first to Christianty's merits, but not the second to its faults?

Be careful not to turn Christianty into an affective death spiral that only ever allows you to add good things to its accretion disk and prevents any chance of objective evaluation.

This sort of worried me too, but less so the more time went on. I'm at a "wait-and-see" kinda mood after all this because I think this type of thing won't be the norm. No proof on my end, just a gut reaction.

Go home and do your chores, family man! We'll be here.

This sort of dangerous status quo reverence that is at the heart of gamer-gate, dude. Putting your fingers in your ears and "just play the games!" I'm sure boogie would agree with you.

lol but why? I don't get it. If it's just a word, then why you care about saying it?

they don't like the idea there is a word that Black people can say that they can't. Like it gives Black folks some kind of "up" on them. That's what it is. Which is stupid anyway because nobody is physically going to stop you from saying the word like nobody stopped this asshat. You can say it all you want. The point is supposed to be that you shouldn't want to because it's a horrible thing to say. But what's basic human decency these days?

That's a quick way to fade into obscurity honestly. Most streamers/YouTubers get audiences with their personalities, not the gameplay. A lot of them aren't even especially skilled at playing but are good at engagement.

Unfortunately there seems to be a bigger audience for puerile nonsense like PDP right now-_-

I'm not talking about right now. Right now they should all rise up against pewdiepie. I'm talking about generally when they are making their own content, just keep everything else out of it.

When something like this happens it's a whole different story. I was just talking about people being worried that their videos will be taken down in the future (and all this is doing is giving themselves away as being closet racists or haters of some kind)

Theres plenty of channels out there that just do their thing. Gamexplain for example, or stringplayergamer who plays game music. Granted I don't follow these people's social media but when they post a video the last thing I expect to see is hatred or even a rant about something that's completely unrelated to the channel. It's unprofessional.

Can we not refer to a 27 year old as a kid? He's a grown ass man.
But also a poster child of the millenials, or 'the man-child generation'

I pretty much agree with the poster you quoted. Anyone that ISNT a proud racist and can somehow blurt that out on a stream is missing sometuing upstairs.

I'm really looking forward to his defense actually, guy fucked up way worse than any of his other incidents by a country mile

I know it's been mentioned, but anyone caught spouting the n word in any work environment is asking to be disciplined, fired, and getting their face kicked in; however, in the gamer world, it's a shrug, some let's wait for a statement, etc. World's turned upside down.

Nobodt watches these guys for their game playing. They watch for thr personality and commentary. The key is just dont be a garbage human being.

Fuck off please... Can we stop blaming millenials for everything?

Agree with everything else

Well that explains why I'm not their audience then. Of course that's the key, and all the people worried about the firewatch developer starting a trend know they are in the wrong. I feel bad for the developer, they're getting so much hate on the steam reviews section.

If somebody calls you a racist it's because of something you've either said or done.

If somebody calls a black person the n-word it's because that somebody is a racist.

I'm struggling to understand your point.

Mesoian said better, but consider this why are so many people are saying Pewdiepie isn't a racist? Also consider why when people that are affiliated with racist movements or organizations they almost always say that they aren't racist.

To these people being called racist is worse than their activities. It shouldn't be that way, but it is for some reason.

Only way the argument holds water is if the word is already a regular part of their vocabulary. I sprinkle "nigga" through my speech a lot in certain situations...but EYE can, and do, say it. PDP can't. That shouldn't be a word he's even so familiar with as to mutter it under his breath when he's upset. That it is is indicative of the fact that he uses the word regularly.

I heard from a religious person who even sings psalms at church that Jews never get cancer due to their ultra-advanced medical facilities. He is an educated person with a family, a degree and his own office, yet he believes in all that stuff...

Best thing would be to respect both religion and people

I think the main problem with people like Phil DeFranco saying PewDiePie is not racist is that they don't know what racism is. Lots of people think you are only racist if you specifically believe black people are inferior to white people, But racism is a societal force of oppression on a certain race. Using hateful words like this casually normalizes it and makes more people use it casually which in turn makes it a racist act.

Trumps treasonous 38 year old child is "a good kid with good intentions". Apparently if you're white your a kid from 1-65 and then you go straight into a "grandparent from a different time", that way, you never have to actually take any responsibility for your words and actions.
Goddamed +1

I compare it to listening to a pod cast. The people talking help make it interesting. I always like to think gaming is just a small loud portion of shit human beings but I lately I just assume every major personality is suspect.

It's still shocking to me, a day later, that there are so many people trying to defend it by saying, "Eh, everybody says it, it's no big deal."

I find the word so vile that I won't even type it or quote someone else saying it. It's not normal for this word to be part of casual conversation. It's baffling that so many people think otherwise.
