I don't really see anything in common personality-wise between MJ and Michelle. But that's a good thing. They reinvented the character for modern times. It happens. I'm attached to MJ because of nostalgia but 99% of the time she's just a party girl / damsel in distress. Michelle was a lot more fun.
And so was Betty.

I'm annoyed by the direction of both characters but for the complete opposite reasons than you would suspect. Michelle should just be Mary Jane, not MJ with an asterisk, every other redhead in live action has been cast as black but Marvel are the only ones to pussy out. Yes the characterisation isn't a perfect match to the comics but neither were Dunst or Stone but they they were still Mary Jane and Gwen. One cute reveal isn't worth her being an entirely different character.
As for "Ned", Miles Morales is barely 6 years old as a character and they've already taken one of his best dynamics with Ganke and given to the white guy. The choice they made with that character should be way more problematic to people on the left than the right, they made an historically white character Asian and yet somehow they were still able to whitewash the situation.
They live in Queens was enough justification for me.

Gank-, er, Ned being Peter's best friend instead of Miles' is the most egregious disrespect of the source material in the movie. No reason they couldn't have just said fuck it and went with Harry Osborne, and really focused on why he and Peter are so close-knit (something neither of the previous movie iterations ever satisfactorily answered. You always wondered why Harry ever bothered with Peter, and vice versa).
No idea what they'll do with Miles in the future, but maybe they figure Sony will have taken Spidey back by then and just wanna make it harder for them to do Miles justice without them. *shrug*

I admit I miss the red hair purley because I find it iconic to the character. I feel like it wasn't there just so they could have a gatcha moment.
As for the character herself I thought she was funny and these characters are often changed a lot so I don't mind if they want to try something different.
Though I still want a sarcastic "face it tiger" at some point dammit.

I bought it off PSN and gosh I loved it, I don't think it was like mind blowing revelation to the genre but being from queens and seeing parts of my neighborhood and even my dentist's office showing in some scenes was really nice. It was a really fun movie and just made me happy watching it, like beginning to end.
tied with winter soldier for being the best MCU movie for me. So glad they're keeping him in high school that's gonna be dope to see in the future.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Really not trying to be contrarian or a "typical" anti-Marvel poster at all. I usually see them all in theater and while they're far from my favorite films, I usually have a decent time at least (though I hated Dr. Strange, for what it's worth). I really love SM Homecoming, though... and I was surprised by how much I really like GoTG2, too.
But yeah... I think the Avenger's action falls pretty flat. It's been a long while since I've seen it, but I remember the *spectacle* was great. The hype of seeing all of our favorite heroes duke it out on the silver screen was intense - it was damn near impossible to not be on the edge of your seat as you waited through the previews. And massive CG budgets and a cool set piece (pretty much all of NYC in the final act) kept the spectacle alive.
But the actual action itself - the choreography, the camera work, the spatial placement of everything, the edits - is pretty weak. It's a far, far cry from the best in the biz from Cameron or Spielberg or the Wachowski's. Something like T2's Terminator exiting the truck and climbing onto the moving 18 wheeler will NEVER not be awesome - it will stand the test of time even when SFX are so grand we implant movies in our brains. The lobby fight in the first Matrix keeps you constantly aware of the placement of our protagonists, the threats, and how they move. Even something as something as recent as the Raid 2 doesn't use crafty, regular cuts and to confuse the viewer and hide iffy choreography both in regard to the actors and the planning of where everyone is and is going to be.
And none of that is to even mention "pacing," which is critical to my enjoyment. The stakes need to get bigger and bigger. I love something, as silly as it sounds, like Tin Tin's car chase. It starts casually enough and it just keeps building and building. It reminded me a lot of why I think Uncharted 2's set pieces are much better than 3 or 4s... the stakes get higher even though it felt crazy at the beginning. I've posted previously about - regardless of how much you hate it - Matrix Reloaded's cake scene to chateau scene to twins fight to highway chase to motorcycle getaway to diesel fight to Neo save is some of the best action pacing in all of cinema. That combination of scenes goes on for like 45 minutes. It's 45 minutes of non-stop action. It doesn't break. It doesn't cut. And yet it's engaging all the way through. And it's not the "end of the film extravaganza" most films have these days (looking at you, Suicide Squad.... yuck).
Take away the "spectacle" - which is quite grand - and the action is kind of weak. My opinion of course, and I'm not saying its bad. It holds up comfortably against most summer blockbuster affairs - but to call it "great" would be a huge exaggeration IMO.

I legit think the Ultron one is better but Whedon starting off with it kinda threw things off for the rest of the movie, Spectre style

The Ultron opening sequence is a nice nod to the first movie's single take action sequence, but is unfortunately marred by some dodgy CGI.
The final battle blows both out of the water in my opinion even if it's heavier on the cuts (I think they're used pretty well in this).

People give Whedon shit for all the "quippiness" of his movies but I really like these battle sequences being mostly devoid of dialogue and just letting the choreography speak for itself.

He took a page out of Doom's playbook and sent an imposter AND IT WORKED. You can't be mad at that.
They have mountains of material they could and should explore before going back to the well with Venom, let alone Agent Venom. All signs point to that not really being in the cards right now, especially with Sony's own Venom fuckery.

I was looking forward to finally seeing this and gave up after about an hour of it. It was just so awful. Hated the constant unfunny humor(yes, I know spidey is a wisecracker), that god-awful AI suit, and how they ruined established chracters(mostly flash). I'll take tobey over this any day

Established characters? Flash has never been a big character in these movies. This is his most substantial appearance yet! If you meant as an adaptation from the comics, yeah, sure, but it's not like the previous movies did anything with him beyond generic bully.

Flash Thompson is a jerk who bullies Peter Parker but idolizes Spider-Man. To me that's the essence of the character, not necessarily that he's a sports jock. I like that they tried something new with him while still being true to the character.
He's not going to become Agent Venom in these movies, so the prerequisite of him being a physical specimen is no longer necessary in this iteration of the character.

I feel like if they do Agent Venom ever in the MCU they need to make it a new character. Keep the idea of them being a veteran who lost their legs trying to save their fellow soldiers.
Okay. I watched maybe one trailer and that short tease of the new theme, and honestly, I was wary going into this. If nothing else CloudWolf had me concerned about the "Tony's yer Spyder daddy"- angle. I sadly missed it in cinemas, but rented it tonight and...
This was DAMN good. I'm actually flabbergasted. If it hadn't been for Wondie my jaw would've fucked my floor up. I didn't know that was good going into it, but this i knew it had been praised. And still, i had this weird feeling I'd be disappointed. But man, I'm so happy to have been proven wrong.
At first i got the vibe that the favorable reviews was due to the very earnest vibe that pervaded the movie's first hour or so. I was very pleasantly surprised by the Stark scene post-ferry, and generally the movie earned my investment as it concluded. The Liz/Keaton twist reminded me of Crazy Stupid Love in the best of ways. And Keaton's villain was so damn rounded (for this kind of movie, anyway). The movie would've worked without it, but it actually made it better. It wasn't just TWIST Y'ALL.
It really elevated the final showdown that I, sorta, understood The Vulture. The Dad talk pre-prom was fucking tense.
Also the references felt really effortless and natural, something i didn't expect off the Avengers bank scene.
Honestly i'm just really impressed. Gotta rewatch it ASAP.

Why was Peter afraid of Vulture when he went to pick up his date? I mean, without his suit he's just a normal guy . he's just Adrian. I know it's a movie for children, but Peter could easily have crushed his skull if he wanted to. He has nothing to fear from a regular human. That part just threw me off. He's basically a god compared to Vulture.
I remember Peter losing three previous encounters with Toomes prior to discovering he was Liz's dad, the first of which almost got Peter killed and third of which almost got a couple hundred people killed. He's 15. He's been Spider-Man for less than a year. He just found out he's been fawning over a supervillain's daughter.
And what version of Spider-Man have you seen or read that has him walking around thinking to himself, "I'm not scared of anything, I can crush anybody's skull at any time!"? Do you know the character?
