No because those in power will interpret the Constitution however they want to keep things the same. The 2nd amendment states that the right to a well-regulated militia "shall not be infringed." Gun nuts take that wording to mean that ANY legislation regarding guns, no matter how sensible, is an infringement on their rights.
Unfortunately this is true. If there was ever a time when gun legislation would have happened it was after sandy hook. And it didn't. Congress stood by and didn't act after 20 kids were killed. They don't care and they won't do shit. Not after 20 kids died, and not over these 50+ people either.

You could, but there is so much ammo out there. People stocked up for just such a scenario.

I imagine if one were so inclined they could make their own bullets

If someone was so inclined they could make their own gun too, but I think by the time we get to that point 99% of the problems currently presented by the ubiquity of firearms in the US would be solved.

Could they ban the public from buying ammo but let them keep their guns, as technically, they are still bearing arms?

Also, my mate here in the UK just told me his girlfriends uncle is over there atm and has shrapnel injuries. To say he's in a state is quite the understatement, he got sent home a few minutes ago.

Chris Rock said that there should be bullet control, where every bullet cost some obscene amount of money, like $5,000. It was presented as a joke, but it might actually work.

In excess of 50 deceased. Also the number for missing people, and blood donations instructions

Wow, woke up to this news with a notification from USA Today and just upset me to the max. Going to a concert and thinking nothing to either fearing for your life or even losing it is just so heartbreaking.

Does anyone think this guy got inspired by the shooting in the UK? Especially with how easy it is to target crowds of people.

"Warmest condolences" sounds like someone's 100 year old grandma just passed away.

Hell of a thing to wake up to. Hoping the death toll doesn't go up more, but with the way it jumped as fast as it did (and after hearing a snippet of the shooting audio on NPR), I'd be shocked if it held around 50.

On a related note, the Daily Mail is nicknamed the 'Daily Fail' on FARK for a reason. It's a complete garbage tabloid that straight up makes shit up. It is not a legitimate news source.

According to the Guardian, he has had no prior criminal record.
Police in Mesquite, where Paddock’s home is being searched, says he did not have a criminal record.

“We don’t have a lot on Mr. Paddock. He does live here in our city. We have not had any law enforcement contact with him in the past,” Quinn Averett, a spokesman for the Mesquite Police Department, said.

In their records, there is no report of any contact with Paddock – no calls for service, no arrests, not even a record of a traffic stop.

Mesquite is a quiet city of about 20,000 people, a “retirement and golf community” with three large casinos that averages about one murder a year, Averett said.

That promo video is fucking despicable...

There are a number of grey market products like that one (and echo triggers) that the ATF doesn't or can't explicitly ban that should be done away with. They aren't protected either, so this is something Trump could easily do by having the ATF issue a clarification of existing rules.

The US is such a sick society for continuously allowing this to happen.

How do you expect it to be stopped? You can make all the laws you want, it isn't going to delete every gun from existence. The simple fact of the matter is that an individual who wants to harm a great number of people and is willing to trade his/her life to do it can do it, with or without guns. You're not going to stop every one of those people, even if you stomp all over the constitution trying to do so. Sure, the US could use better gun control laws but such laws will not stop these incidents.

That said, the US has related problems that do have solutions. The state of mental health care in this country is abysmal.

Oh ok wow the misinformation is rampant. Thanks.

That isn't unique to this tragedy especially in the age of Twitter. This spread of misinformation happens in everything tragedy and it happens quickly. Always check your sources and look for multiple ones for confirmations. Even in this thread, which is actually going quite well so far.

That's a lot of nonsense. People are appalled by this. It's mainstream news all over the world.

There are some posters in this topic really trying to agitate shit and it's not pretty. There are bodies probably still warm and people fighting for their lives and some of you are more concerned about scoring political points or aiming to agitate feelings during a horrible situation.

edit: I wasn't talking about gun control here. I support gun control.

No one will want to have this conversation in a week's time. We'll have moved on to something else.

What's truly horrifying about these attacks is, how do we even stop them from happening?

Do we ban guns?
Do we need to improve mental health treatment?
Do we increase surveillance?

Unfortunately it seems these lone wolf type attacks are near impossible to stop

It's even more the norm in Paris though...

Huh? The U.S is the only western country with mass killings and gun homicides in general to this degree, it's in the top 10 with countries like Venezuela.

Even with terrorist attacks in Europe it doesn't even pale to what goes on in the U.S.

Germany has < 100 gun homicides a year... vs upwards of 10k in U.S in a year. Not to mention with each mass shooting, 2002, and 2009, laws got much more stricter each time. Interestingly Germany is still among the countries with most owned firearms yet one of the countries with the least related deaths, it all comes down to law and gun regulation.

You can look at homocide per capita as well, it all checks out and plenty of verifiable information out there.

This is pretty much comparable to rest of Europe, including France.

Jesus Christ. I went to bed when this story was just a tweet that there had been a report of gunfire. I was hoping it was just a false report. Then I wake to this.

That footage :(

It's so upsetting, my thoughts are with everyone involved and their friends and families.

Surely it's too early to say it's 'not a terror attack' though? How could we possibly know at this stage when we don't know the motive?

I don't understand why this has to be the norm in America

How don't you? Here's some current norm in the USA, from an outsiders perspective:

- armed people in public are no problem at all, you can literally buy guns in supermarkets or on the internet
- racism and hate arrived at a new high due to..
- politics lead by a capitalist nutjob right-wing and quite frankly dumb president, and lots of people _love_ him.
- additionally, hate-speech isn't prohibited but encouraged
- lots of stories about racism even in public service, like police, come out every month, yet nobody does anything about it and shifting blame
- lots of stories about gun related incidents come out every month, yet nobody does anything about it and shifting blame
- News reports moving goalposts and bending truths to fit their political agenda, fake news vs real news is a fair fight, which is laughable

I mean there's so much more, but it's not surprising at all. If nobody acts on bad things, they tend to get the new norm.

Protest for proper gun control, protest against racism, protest against politics that don't suit you. That's something literally everyone can do.

All the evidence points to the fact that these incidents can be stopped and have been in many other countries around the world

Let me break it down for ya.

50% of the country will be sick with outrage and sadness.
gc
The other 50% will say it's fake news, or the victims deserved it cause they were probably God hating faggots, or it was a Democratic false flag, or muh rights, or now is not the time to talk about gun legislation.
Ya know I see comments like this all the time and I really think that it is comments that like look like this that do more harm than good. As some one that just falls all over the map on political issues but leans heavily left I would look at a comment like that and think. “ why would I ever want to try and talk things out with that ignorant fuck” and walk away. Which in turn would reinforce your perception and we would both lose.

Those countries never had a gun culture as pervasive as America, though. They never had an entire industry dedicated to paying off those who could change things in order to keep them the same. To keep selling more guns to a country where there are more guns than people. Where there is a mass shooting for every single day so far in 2017.

Simply stated it's just not that easy for America to get over its obsession with guns.

I know there are terrible things that happen in other countries, but I've been through Paris, Munich, Florence, and I'm heading to Montepulciano now. EVERYONE I have met in my travels has said violent crime like what we have in America is so unheard of in these other countries. Petty theft is more common, but acts of physical violence is significantly more rare. It's really sad and makes me hurt for our country.

Do what Australia did after the Port Arthur shooting. It seems to be working for them.

The shooter is white, ergo they will not call him a terrorist. It's repugnant.

Even if it stopped one person, and saved one life, it would be worth it.

Don't be so dense. The solution doesn't have to be perfect. But for fuck's sake, anything is better than just doing nothing every fucking time!
