The state of NeoGAF

To all the people saying the bans in the past were always justified.
How about this;
I made a thread asking for a link to a video I previously saw on Neogaf. It was a woman parking her car failing terribly, and some other driver stepped out of his car and parked her car in few secs. I mentioned it was funny and I would like to show someone else I know.

I got banned. The ban message was something like, "women can't drive, huh".
I had 0 intention for my thread to be sexist. The mention of woman or girl, failing at doing something and I wanted a link to it, got me banned. I never felt that was justified. I didn't say all women were bad drivers and it was a fact that in the video it was a woman.

I never even got warned for it and straight got a ban for like 6 months or a year, I don't exactly remember. That was just too much. And when I got back I was afraid to post anything remotely could be seen as offensive.

Hopefully the new mods aren't as sensitive. I think with the old posters gone it has given rise to Juniors not being afraid to post as much, I lurked and never posted outside of gaming because I didn't wan't to lose my account over something petty/taken out of context.

This right here.

All of you guys that didn't like the previous moderation had plenty of other places to go. So why didn't you go there? The thing that made GAF special in the first place was the moderation. If you really hated it so much you should have at least turned that energy inward and questioned your own behavior instead of blaming the mods for something you have the power to change. Y'know... being able to question oneself and accept criticism is kind of a cornerstone of living a healthy, happy adult life. Unfortunately EL couldn't manage even the slightest bit of it, so here we are at last.

Without the moderation GAF is no different from many of the other unmoderated spaces on the Internet you could freely participate in. I don't see the point in having yet another space like that when they're a dime a dozen. Go pick one and stick with it. Or, if you really don't like those spaces either, maybe question why that might be the case?

GAF was a thing before Beefsoda and friends basically took over and systematically purged the most popular posters, because obviously, they had other plans for the future of this forum.

GAF was plenty special 10 years ago, when it actually had an identity beyond "this is where the woke people gather, this is our holy land". There were even actual industry people posting and GAF has been living off the reputation from that era until today, because the best you're getting these days is an NPD spokesperson, "leakers" who are always wrong and fucking Durante.

It's just kind of hilarious when I see people like you identifying the moderation of the last 4 years as GAF's defining accomplishment even though it basically marked the beginning of this forum developing into a joke. You're in love with GAF's twilight years.

I don't think that poster is saying NeoGaf was not deserving of respect. I think the poster was laughing at the inability to understand the deep deep hatred a lot of people (either far-right types, previously banned members, etc) have for this place.

Yeah, this. I was definitely unaware of this. I think it's mainly because I never see GAF being brought up anywhere outside of GAF. To look for the hate, you kind of have to seek it out on other sites.

I do understand. The change is likely to be reverted as the moderation team agrees that transparency and accountability is very important. We just need everyone to be a little patient until things become stable.
Stable? Y'all got posters railing against previous mods because they were banned for shitposting or being bigots under the guise of "discussion". Your loyal, vocal members are trying hard to remove the decency image. Heck, I was called toxic by posters who think holding bigots accountable for what they say is good.

I see y'all banning the more obvious ones but never did I forsee NeoGAF actually entertain this both sides rhetoric. It's downright shameful.

I'll be interested to see what witnesses he can summon from the shower.

Tyler Malka: "My good friend John Barron was there that night and he can attest to my innocence."

John Barron: "First of all, this lady, she's a liar, my friend Tyler Malka is such a good guy, he's a good guy, we're so alike, when you think John Barron you should be thinking Tyler Malka, that's how alike we are. His website is beautiful, it's fantastic. But this lady, I've never met a bigger liar in my life, she's so mentally ill and neurotic, believe me. In fact, I think I'll call her Neurotic Nancy."

You know what was the worst of all in your story? The mod message. Mods around here (not all of them of course) really acted like douches way too often. Dont know where they got the attitude but they were pretty arrogant, and downright rude.

I had a similar experience with a ban that I got and I thought it was pretty unjustified, and got myself an equally snarky mod message as well. At first I thought it was a one-off but then again there are countless screenshots of other people's ban reasons and they sure were an eye opener for me...then again what can you expect, they are led by example by their CEO...

And sure, posting around here, especially even slightly disagreeing over details, or voicing concerns over some popular views, was pretty much tip toeing yourself around a mine field.

I got banned on a thread about some sexual harrassment incident... Literally all I said was "what if he really didn't do it"... Got told I was wasting the moderators time in the message and next will be a permanent ban

Most people wait months before getting their accounts approved. If no one signed up from this day forth there would be more people joining everyday for the next few months. Did people suddenly forget this?

We know how membership works and that there's months old requests pending.

400 new members in one day is a lot, though, and looked like a pretty significant chunk of those pending requests had suddenly been approved at once.

But if I understand correctly, those are new accounts, not necessarily approved ones. Which would mean new accounts made after the meltdown (in which case, probably people eager to shit on neogaf)

Plot twist: Subpar Spatula is $30 italian meal.

Damn, that is nuts. Though it's not surprising. There were so many posters that were looking to be offended in the OT. Hopefully the asshat that banned you for that has decided to weed himself out of the forum.

By the very nature of the changes to the forum they will need to be even more strict and draconian to support the new rules. Not only that but its all the more nebulous with the fact we don't even know who the mods are.

The moderation had some issues. There were some undeserving bans and you had to toe the line exactly to match the most extreme mods in controversial threads. Your opinion couldn’t even be slightly, respectfully different and I say that as someone with very liberal views. All said though it was much better than the cesspools other sites were thanks to the strict moderation. It had issues, but was the best option by far.

There will always be undeserving bans and I'm not sure why people think that will suddenly change. The owner shut down the site and then closed half of it because he couldn't properly handle bull shit in his personal life. That doesn't exactly bode well for how things are handled in the future especially in concern to the owner.

Seriously. People are magically expecting the greatest conversation of their lives on an internet forum are going to be sorely disappointed

Yep, these are my feelings as well. It's just baffling.

Not borked. Limited to invite only.
Are people getting invites through PM? I'd like to try it, but it's mysterious atm.

Pm’d.

For now the communities in the discord organize to verify old users. People outside probably have to wait a bit.

So I have to have a special discord link to get a special code but only after I’m vetted but some person? Do I have to drive down Old Dirt Road 32, turn right by the brokedown mill, and look for an tall oak tree with a white rock at the base where the next step is hidden underneath, too? :p

Sorry that this happened to you, but this is hilarious.

Discord peeps are getting in. After those are in and most of the Gaming Community/Off Topic Community are built and ready it will open for regular registration.
Pfft, I'm not social enough to join the discord :(

Looks like I'm in the back of the line.

PM'ing me won't do you any good. There's a 10 minute limit to PM replies and I'll tell you the same thing as I do here.

Invites went out to different GAF Discord communities. For example: Poli-GAF, Fighting game-GAF, Destiny-GAF, etc. Community leaders in those discords vetted other members. I'm not sure what the vetting procedure was.

Now invites are being sent to vetted members through discords. If you didn't join one of those discords during the blackout you probably can't get in through the first wave. There's nothing I can do for you. Try asking one of the communities for links to their Discords

Pfft, I'm not social enough to join the discord :(

Looks like I'm in the back of the line.
If you're social enough to make 15000 posts on a forum you're social enough to post on Discord. It's not exclusively voice chat you know

just wondering, did you preview this post before you made it or are you completely oblivious to the irony here
Exactly.

I also think he/she is being a bit disingenuous about the reality of the situation. Talk isn't banned, it is being discouraged and may be moderated but you can still mention the site without having it be censored. I don't blame them for wanting a clean slate.

After discussions among the staff and with the community we have decided that we want ResetEra to be a truly fresh start. We'd like to look to the future and leave any baggage behind. Towards that end we ask you not to post any threads about NeoGAF or its owner and avoid linking to the site. This is in no way an attempt to shut down free discussion, but instead a way to avoid unnecessary complications with other parties. If you must, there are other ways and venues to express yourselves but please get it out of your system before coming to ResetEra. We have a great opportunity here to build something new with a blank slate. Let's press reset!

For now it would be probably the best to ask someone to get you on the Discord.

He's right though. Reset Era discouraged talk about GAF and evilore for the stated reason of not dragging that baggage and drama along. I don't think that suppression of talk will help to give it a fresh start, but we'll see.

Before, we weren't able to voice any concerns about moderation. That silence could've been misconstrued as approval, when in actuality it was the fear of being banned for making any criticisms, constructive or not.

That could still be the case, but I don't think I've seen anyone get banned on this thread simply for mentioning how displeased they felt with the old style of moderation, and that italian meal made it sound like they've been listening to feedback. So now is as good a time as any to mention it, and it seems a large amount of people feel considering a different approach to moderation would be for the best.

So by making moderation even more murky overall and instituting even more draconian rules on content they're opening things up? Again, the site was shut down and half of it closed down because of the in real issues and poor response of the owner followed by a myriad of changes, bans and thread closings, none of which had anything to do with him or his personal problems. Why am I expecting things to get better after a stunt like that?

Well I'm not saying that the changes they've made so far are going to fix things, just that people mentioning how bad they felt things were before may encourage further changes.

Again why am I expected to trust someone after such a stunt? Its not even a matter of whether EviLore did or not but how he responded in quite possibly the worst way possible outside of just closing the thing down forever and deleting everything before flying the coup.
