Returning member after a long absence, how would you rate the overall health of this forum?

You already dislike all the political stuff in OT so I can understand what you are saying. I think many of us feel that it is even worse on the gaming side because we just want to talk about games themselves and the mechanics, tech, etc. without all the moral and political questions muddying it up.

To be fair, the people complaining about politics in gaming aren't the ones that brought it in the first place. As far as I can tell, it's just a natural reaction to the state of games journalism. If they can't read an article about their favourite game without identity politics being shoehorned in there somehow, of course they're going to complain about it. I haven't followed gaming news for a while so I don't even know how it got infested with all the bullshit in the first place.

So true, and I don't know what to say/do about gaming journalism these days. I would imagine that the time is ripe for some new folks to start blogs/channels that are focused back on the fun/tech side of things. I think some quality content without the ideological baggage would be very popular.

I haven't followed gaming news since around 2013 so I wouldn't even know where to look. I used to like Gametrailers but I heard they went belly up.

Are they non-political? I only ask because, if so, their name is unfortunate. I hate the term ally these days, lol.

I will have to check them out if so.

Very very rarely do they ever get political. Usually the only two that do are Damiani and Ian, both of which are usually told to quiet down by the fanbase. They mostly stick to gaming news first and foremost as well as their personal thoughts on the games they played that week (devoid of politicial bullshit usually).

If I could find the time to get back into gaming, I would. Life tho ☹️

Understandable. If you do have a chance to listen to their podcast, I suggest you try it. Both Frame Trap (run by the wonderful Ben Moore) and The Easy Allies Podcast (run by Kyle Bossman) are great to listen to.

EZA is fairly non-political, they basically focus on the product itself. I can't speak if they go off topic in podcasts but their YT videos are basically solely on games and rather they are good or not, etc. The great thing about EZA is the quality of their video reviews retain the same professional standards from GT. Brandon Jones still does the voice overs, and the quality of editing and writing is usually top notch.

As far as editing goes, no one edits reviews as well as they do to this day.

The only people that didn't really go from GT to EZA is Satterfield and the second guy that did voice overs when Brandon Jones stopped doing them for a bit. (I forgot his name but he had a really cool voice and was a black guy with dreads)

Needs more activity but at least seems that you won't get banned for having a different or unpopular opinion.

Thank goodness. I've been coming here for years, and that was the worst part of NeoGaf. Not only that, but bans were usually PERMANENT over minor infractions, no warning.

During the schism, I jumped ship to follow the crowd because I thought GAF was dead. Coming back now, I realize all the people I couldn't stand from GAF were the ones that left. I feel like this is the GAF I needed all long.

Although, I was 'Juniored' a few years ago and would love to come back here full time. Is there any way to get that fixed?

Pleeeeeeease!

Check out this topic.

Some updated thoughts after being back for a bit.

Love that there are different sides to each conversation. Nothing worse than an echo chamber where dissenting views are not allowed.

Off Topic currently skews right by a decent margin. Open discussion is allowed, so that's not a bad thing.

There are some really low quality posts on here, and they're more noticeable because activity isn't high enough yet. It should work itself out as activity increases.

Some things are civilizational achievements so there's nothing to discuss really. Things like women's rights, black rights, LGBT rights, the right for immigrant families to remain together... Among many other things. Like it or not, the truth is, a lot of users on this board want to challenge these views. And on top of that, moderation is pretty much non-existent. So yeah, why is there no activity? Why are there no women posting? That's why.

I just lurk nowadays. Most stuff, especially from off-topic, I won't get into, because it's not worth it. I suppose a lot of other old users do the same.

Could you elaborate on this a bit? How is this beyond the controls of the mods, they, together with the admins, make the policies and decide how to moderate the forum, where is the control if not in the hands of the mods?

There are some unwritten rules in forums and no forum is an exception, where some members are more equal and influential than others and usually get off lightly or not at all. Social relations were never my forte

As a looooooong time lurker on Gaf, I never even tried joining because of the hostile nature of a lot of the posters. Now that they have all jumped ship, I think Gaf is in a good place. I've seen civil discourse without it devlolving into a shit show. Moderation steps in when it's actually needed, as opposed to silencing any opposing view.

Women do post here, transexuals too... so there goes that theory
And before anybody points to our purple neighbor as a haven for women, one only has to look at their "women problem" topic in which numerous posters complain about how awful and hostile that forum is for women.

I seriously doubt that many women post on ERA either way. Maybe one for every 100 users, tops.

Believe me, this site is worse for women. I remember a thread about asking empathy to women who face harassament and it was to be closed because men really like to talk about experience they don't understand (and no, I'm not saying men don't face such problems)

I would like to ask what think our GirlGaf community about this. But hey, they are gone! Good job Lore!

Thanks, internet person!

Hi. You appear to really hate this place. Your post history is seemingly nothing but anger and negativity.

What attracted you to NeoGAF? Do you like video games? Do you play video games? What motivates you?

Women or females? 😉

I get the impression you don't actually know many women. No, your waifu body pillow doesn't count.

I like to argue with racist and sexist people. I play videogames. Lately I have been playing Etrian Odyssey Untold, FFX, Dragon Quest V and VII, Persona 5. It motive argue about so-called gamers and how horrible they are.

Ok yeah, you definitely don't know any women.

Ye got to invest the time to expose those horrible gamers. They are truely the scum of the earth aren't they?
Spoken like a true warrior of justice.

Sure, whatever you like to think.

I'm going to go easier on you in future because you just admitted to forming your political opinions from JRPGs. It feels like picking on a handicapped kid and there's just no satisfaction in that.

Do the transgender women not count?

The choice to leave was and is always in the power of the community members. You were not forced out. You made a conscious decsion to leave based on hearsay. And this is evidenced by the number of people who remained and new members signing up.

Communities are in a strange place at the moment but we think we have a way forward with them that we were discussing yesterday. But these things take time.

But it's also fair to say many of the current users here don't disclose their gender or personal information because it's irrelevant to games on a broader scale. You, of all people, should know that just because you don't wear a digital brand of your sex, doesn't mean you aren't part of the community as a whole. If your identity is so vehemently tied to a sub community then I would suggest that that is a problem in itself. Until sub communities are not needed there will always be integration/segregation problems.

And just because this is the internet, I must stress this doesn't mean I am diminishing any of the valid issues any sub-identity group experiences. However, it would seem the answer for any group attempting to rectify social problems (even online) is heavier integration and mediation. The answer is not to form insular sub communities as a safe place where the members fit a criteria to participate. Especially when those sub communities have a negative impact and become pits of despair to wallow in.

I would venture to say that ultimately this is a character trait. And why ultimately it fails. Humans will always identify the differences between them. Even now, the collective that did leave are showing how schizophrenic and hypocritical their at-will division is.

Given you take the lack of girlgaf community as an absence of girls, the lack of a racist community or sexist community also, by your logic, must not exist.

The enemies you refer to are not here. You are tilting at windmills.

Nah, user posting hateful and racist and sexist commentarys are enough evidence.

I committed account suicide on ERA.

I did too but it's because I was too neutral and crossing eden called me a moron without critical Thinking skills.

I'd like gaf to get more active and still stay free of extreme left and right nut jobs.

So you enjoy arguing with hateful, sexist and racist people but find some level of catharsis in reading these type of messages, and are therefore on some sort of personal mission to rectify this...

..and you are telling me that the place you choose to wage this battle is on a videogame forum?

I prefer the new forum.

We got rid of a lot of crazy during the shift. Like, actual crazy.

Yeah no shit, I was over there and mentioned I thought the last jedi was a steaming pile, with good argument, and I was set upon by dozens of mental cases. I imagine that the most common hair colour over there is blue.

Yeah! Some people have gone banned, but they return and keep saying their hateful rethoric. Too bad about that.

Don't suppose I could take a moment of your time and ask for a link to one these discussions?
Just so I can get an idea of where your at.

No joke. I said I was anti-censorship and it drove people insane.

ERA is one scary place right now. That site is going to collapse upon itself soon.

There are many. One of them was Mr "I wish that one of these SJW journalists had children so that I could kick them in their fuckin' head or stomp in their testicles so they could feel the same pain they inflict on the arts every day." He is back after a week, clearly a good deserving vacation.

Until y'all ask OT and its entirety, yeah I really do need to dispense with the idea that this form is video games first.

Your two most active threads on the video game side right now are about the polygon peace about toxic masculinity and video game culture, and The Escapist announcement concerning a commitment to not proactively speak on politics.

I'm glad that you decided to write this post, because it gives a better idea of the direction this form is moving, echoing the sentiments of your conservative users who take every opportunity to take a dump on feminism, yearn for a color-blind society, and fictionalize sexual orientation.

I would have expected more from a moderator than to build a straw man upon the absence of explicitly racist or sexist sub-communities as an argument, but given all that you have said prior to that, it wasn't too shocking to read.

I can say that my friends start threads about barbecue Becky, permit Patty, and pool pass Paul without me having to. Meanwhile, my enemies continue to downplay, deny, and deflect.
