Stop being so upset about us bantering about Era. No matter how much you wanna downplay things, there is no doubt that the creation of ResetEra was a big cut for GAF and things were looking bleak for a while afterwards. It's fine to talk about and it doesn't make us sewage. Believe it or not, there were people who actually cared about this site and hated the way how toxic their former "internet home" got when it was handed on a silver platter to SJWs. Yes, it's natural to see change in things and in life. But it's not always for the better. Just looking at the way mods are handling this topic on this very page paints a positive picture on how things could turn out for "NuGAF". Transparency and freedom of opinion are a great thing. See how you can talk to us without having to pass purity tests and being in constant fear of accidentally stepping out of line?
Sorry, I don't follow Giant Bomb, just not autistic enough to idolize a weird group of bitter "game journalists".
Pro tip: If things antagonize you or others, you are not forced to read.
You probably didn't read what I wrote correctly, so let me help you out. Questioning whether it's an integral part of the site's history has nothing to do with how much resetera was a cut for gaf, which it obviously was. It has to do with the real purposes of this thread. You're not remotely interested in discussing resetera as an "integral part of gaf's history", most people here just want to take a jab at things that are being said over there, and this whole integral-part spiel is a thinly veiled excuse for doing so. As for why this is the most popular thread here, most of you keep saying how it's a continuous flow of entertainment for you, but I wonder if it's something else as well. Does resetera not being one of the usual vitriolic regressive gaming hubs somehow anger you? Or maybe you don't like the fact that their gaming side is as lively as oldgaf used to be, compared to the wasteland that is nugaf's current gaming side? There are many possibilities that haven't been ruled out.
Also yeah, freely (and unironically) using words like "sjws" and "autistic", I now plainly see how healthy this forum has become.
Oh, you mean like when Daniel Vavre was called out for being 'racist' - despite the fact that he wasn't racist? How about Colin Moriarty who was called out for being 'intolerant' - despite the fact that (again), no such intolerance was found, except to the overzealous community that you seem to subscribe to. The community *looks* for any mild non-issue they have and tries to make it an issue. They have a long history of these pathetic witch hunts, something that has been proven to cause industry veterans to hide/shy from communication (as can be seen by the Skyrim poster). What about the multiple bans for daring to suggest that Jessica Price deserved to be fired or calling out the false narratives that people like Jason Schreier or Austin Walker tried to push? Nah, they were just the ones pushing false narratives and demonizing the press they so desperately wish to get notoriety from. The moderation team was on the "right side of history."
You consider this "antagonizing" people, but the vast majority of the posts is looking at the actions of other sites to hopefully prevent such poor moderation and community interaction from taking hold here once more. Most of the "antagonizing" comes from people like you and your posts that refer to everyone as "sewage", blatantly false claims of "alt-right/neo-nazis", and sad attempts at trying to play the moral high ground. Also, this isn't the most popular thread. Nice try with the disingenuous bull.
You mean Daniel Vavra the gamergator? Or the unapologetically-sexist rightwinger Colin Moriarty? What makes you think both of them wouldn't be called out for their practices over at resetera? If you want to build your strawman argument you will have to find better examples than those two, all you currently have a is a shapeless pile of hay.
Also re: most popular thread. An OT or somesuch might have been more popular here at some point, and this somehow negates the fact that this is one of the most active threads the site has seen in a while. Keep deflecting.
One day you'll realise that all you've done by crying racist at every single transgression because "you're on the right side of history" is make the word meaningless if you haven't already. Racist, bigot, misogynist, ---phobe, facist etc are used so flippantly and errantly that they are already well on their way to becoming meaningless.
And that isn't even looking into the fact that almost every one of them is used in a hypocritical manner.
Ah yes, the usual "it's not them, it's you" fallacy. The issue at hand is not the pervasive racism and sexism being propagated by emboldened people, it's the people who call them out. It's easy to say people are crying wolf, and it's easy to dismiss everything as a non-issue when you are not affected by any of the issues at hand. Kind of like how the phrase "I don't see color, if you do you are the real racist" seems to always come from white folk. You call them meaningless because you do not care, but to others those things are a constant issue in their everyday lives. It takes effort to be understanding at the very least.
Also thanks for that high and mighty "you'd be banned by now" input. During my 5 years at oldgaf I seemed to be doing just fine. Those opinions you express now, where were you to express them during those times? I guess that's why people become particularly agitated when I call them out as cowards.
Regardless, I won't discuss things that are up to mod discretion. What I always liked about gaf was that I could freely speak my mind and that led to lots of constructive discussions (and pretty heated discussions sometimes), but somehow never a ban. I guess that tends to happen if your opinions are not a pile of bigoted trash. I also guess that when some of you say "we would be banned at the old site for that, but now we are good", it's because you know exactly what kind of opinions you hold. If the mod team believes I've gone too far now and should take a (permanent or otherwise) vacay, I will accept it and thank everyone for my 5 years here.
I see this argument a lot on Reset, but no one can dismantle it there without getting perma banned, so allow me to do it here:
Calling out someone for being intolerant is fine. Calling out everyone who does not agree with your opinion for being intolerant simply because they do not agree with your opinion is not fine. It's pure dictatorship behaviour. Most of the people being accused of racism over that side aren't even being racist. Most of the people being accused of sexism aren't even being sexist. And let's not even talk about extreme labels like "nazi".
As someone else said here, the constant misuse of those labels ultimately makes them meaningless.
Jessica Price's thread is an excellent example. She accused a fan of mansplaining her for giving her feedback then and proceeded to call him an asshat, in addition to being very aggressive towards another user. She (and a male co-worker who defended her actions) got booted by the company the next morning. But simply pointing this out on the resetera thread was worth a ban for, guess what, "pushing a false narrative"! The tweets were there for everyone to see, but apparently, according to the mods, they are fake news and a product of our imagination. The gaming press took this story and called the fan in question the harasser and Price the victim, even though it was blatantly not the case. But simply pointing this out was worth a ban as well, for "villifying game journalism"! Guild Wars 2 community, which is one of the nicest and most SJW-friendly out there (far more than ResetEra itself, which are not friendly nor welcoming) were accused for being an "angry mob of Gamegators!" by reseters. But you couldn't dare to point out how ignorant tht was, if you didn't want to get silenced by the mods and labeled a "far-right troll".
Ultimately, the community's hypocrisy and false labeling is all over the place. They were willing to defend a bully just because she was a woman. Where's the morality in that? That's sexism. Why weren't they banned? Why weren't they labeled nazis too? Because doing so would require some sort of self-conscious about their own hypocrisy, which they don't have any. In their limited view of the world, their opinion is 100% right and everyone who does not agrees with them is 100% wrong.
So, no, reseters are't having people banned for being intolerant. They are having people banned for being "perceived" as intolerant, according to their own incredibly broad, vague standards of what makes someone intolerant or not. The moment something like "I don't like you" equals "you are intolerant", then that label has lost any meaning behind it.
I briefly looked up the Jessica Price incident as I didn't know anything about it. (side note - I'm hardly active at the other site as well, so don't go thinking I'm some kind of resetera spokesperson who's supposed to address every little controversy you throw at me. I frequent both sites and I can tell what's happening here and what's happening there) Barely anything you said is true. The resetera thread has people claiming she was in the wrong during that exchange, and no ban or "dogpile" occurred. I guess the "reeeeeseters are unhinged again!" narrative doesn't quite work here. What I did see is that the incident spawned a harassment campaign from reddit and other toxic wastelands within the gaming community, with people spam-emailing employers to fire their women employees. That sound familiar? The only angry mob I saw came from the videogame community (again), and youtube-searching Jessica Price and seeing the kind of videos posted about her (and the kind of people who made those videos) really tells me all I need to know. If people over at resetera were indirectly supportive of yet another hate campaign, then yeah I see no wrong in giving them the boot.
Also reverse sexism is not a thing, same for reverse racism, but I feel like we're beating a dead horse by now. These kinds of arguments were debunked at this very site years ago, only to be brought back after everyone left.
