IGNs main gripes were:
- Bad storyline, bad dialogue and cringy cartoony bad guys (their praise the main protagonist thou as being likeable)
- Repetitive environments, sparse areas with little interaction beyond copy-and-paste freaker nests.
- Little to no world building or meaning environmental storytelling.
- Repetitive missions (fetch quest, time sinks)
I expected these problems, however it is a shame that the story wasn't better. I really need a good compelling narrative to carry me through games like this.
I think your tolerance for Open World games depends a lot on how engaged you are in the world. A lot of these points can be attributed to many other open world games. But you have people who enjoy them regardless because they are so compelling. I really liked AC Origins and Oddysee, despite knowing that a lot of these points are valid for those games too. I just find Zombie-Oregon a lot less compelling than Ancient Greece, and that's okay. It is going to be different for others who feel the opposite.
Shadow of Mordor, Mafia 3, Read Dead Redemption 2, Horizon, Crackdown 3, Asssassins Creed. There are many people who hate these things in general, but find a lot to love about them in the open world games that really hook you in. So if you are someone who is really into this sort of look and vibe, you probably can overlook some of the repetition and problems.
