NYCC Star Trek: Picard Trailer

Trailer has me more interested in this than any of the upcoming Star Wars shows/films. Hopefully the plot is more complex than the trailer leads on; mysterious girl needs help, old war horse comes back into service, the bureaucracy shuns him, he assembles a rag tag team, he helps liberate the folks the mysterious girl wants help with, hero rights the bureaucracy but actions have consequences and story has room to grow in future seasons.

Love it. I understand with its budget and lack of Disney tech they can't make Data perfect, props for trying though. Still very happy with how this is looking so far.

It kinda looks like they just put some Picard storyline around the edges of a show that's really about a young new cast. The fan service will be fun and then the bulk of the season will be mostly about the young, good-looking cast you've never head of.

CBS, don't you fucking dare hype me up with the trappings of quality and let me down. I don't trust you in the slightest, and if this show is shit you've lost me forever like Star Wars has. This is your last chance, don't fuck it up.

We now have a DS9/Voyager situation incoming, two treks at once. It'll be interesting to see if they actually feel different. The settings are definitely different, I guess it all depends how they present it. Obviously, Picard will have the most presence of the past Trek cast. I have no issues with it focusing on the next generation. TNG/DS9/Voy was my time in Trek. Compared to Discovery, STP may have enough to actually pull me in.

On an unrelated, and sad, note.

Space is no longer Space. Now we Canadians have CTV Sci-Fi Channel. Farewell The Imagination Station.

Nah it was always a Picard story but it began as a Short Trek that grew to 10 episodes.

They get a pass this one time, because it's not technically Data. Though every time I see him I can't tell if there's digital fuckery with Brent Spiner's face.
Yea i took a hard look at his face. Think it's just tones of makeup.
Also I really wish that film wasn't cannon. I hate all those films.

I wholehertadly agree, First Contact was the only TNG film that was entertaining IMO, and it still shat all over Picard's character. I want Picard smart, slow, and boring, he doesn't need to be Rambo in space.

wait is data dead in this shit?

please tell me this isn't bouncing off the movies
his consciousness exists in some form, and iirc it was B4's body in the original trailer

though picard is probably also dreaming about him

That actually gave me goosebumps... Love the fanservice! Hopefully, they go full fanservice and bring in Worf, Beverly and maybe more too. I am hoping on some good Star Trek.

who the fuck is b4 and what happened to his conciousness
in ST Nemesis, they found another Soong android and Data tried to learn him everything by copying his memories to the other. Data got blowed up, but B4 started showing signs of Data as the movie ended.

Maybe Data doesn't have a body but is sometimes a hologram.

in the comic leading to Reboot Trek, Data had taken over B4's body. I don't know if that's still canon, even though the Romulus incident is.

How am I triggered 😂 It looks like the most generic " we have to save the universe " " this person is the key to it all " plot ever.

Like jesus fucking christ we can't ever have a tv show anymore where we can slowly build towards something. Nah it all has to be grandiose from day one, save the universe type bullshit we keep getting after Marvel.

Keep that Star Wars bullshit where it belongs Alex Kurtzmann

It sounds like this season is only Data, Troi, Riker, Seven of Nine, and Hugh. They're saving others for the next season.

The lens flares are really distracting. Whenever they show up the entire set looks phony. Which is strange because I wasn't bothered by them in the Abrams movies.

Besides that I'm pretty pumped.

I seriously can't get over that they're using the Anaheim Convention Center as a set...looks kinda like Federation HQ? I mean it's a gorgeous structure, but like, tons of people will recognize it outright.

Still, I'm in day 1.

Picard goes to WonderCon!

I adore the way they introduced Riker... "Daaad!" "WHAHT!?"

But I anticipate with a grain of salty skepticism

so we're not getting professor data because of the goofy movies

jesus christ

Obvious from the trailers, the 'death' of Data will play into Picard's motivation.

Also very clear, Brent Spiner says it IS Data we're seeing in the show, not B4.

I was excited with the previous Data reveal but the more they show of him the worse it looks.

There are so many CG characters these days. Trying to stick latex all over the old actor was the worst choice here.

Don't like the look of the new crew. Seven and Picard don't seem to match in tone.

Huge TNG fan but I think I might be out.

You know what. Data feels like the new Sonic movie.

Reconsider his look! It's going to be a train wreck. Just make him CG.

Not available in your country, really :messenger_neutral:
Oh Riker..
Let's hope this is good ol TNG.
and not some PC shit

To be clear, every shot we've seen of Data has been a dream or holodeck, and there is zero indication that Data will ever appear "alive" in any way outside of those contexts.

- in the first trailer, it's a holodeck or dream when they are playing cards: Data is wearing his original TNG uniform (not even the movie one), he calls Picard "captain", the background is a white void... and poker was always where they'd meet with dead figures on the holodeck, it has a long tradition in Star Trek

- in the new trailer, that's clearly a dream, where Data is once again wearing his original uniform and indicating that Picard must remember / reveal some knowledge hinted at in the painting

Also, hairnet-Data looks terrible. Who thought this was how his hairline looked in the original series? Is he a lunch lady now?

His hair wasn't rounded, idiots, it had definition and a squarer edge.

i was talking about the body in the drawer being b4, though i guess data's body could also have been recovered

if countdown stays canon, he was captain of the e while in b4's body, THEN he died again somehow

i guess countdown isn't canon anymore

You know what my only crtitque is the daughter saying jean luc Picard and not just "Jean luv." How many "jean lucs" does this family know. Fix that shit, paramour.

Picard doing fencing bothers me a little. As Redlettermedia said, the TNG cast was not made for action scenes when they were young... so Patrick Stewart is 79 years old now, I'm already afraid of what it will result.

Then, I think we can already abandon the idea of the old TNG formula. We won't have themed episodes, but a big story followed by a lot of Hollywood twists... hopefully we won't fall into the Discovery disaster.

Old people fence all the time

The unshakeable feeling from the trailer is that these are the actors, not the characters. We see Marina Sirtis and Johnathan Frakes hanging out, but... does anyone seriously see Riker and Troi in those shots, for even a moment? This is what happens when actors try to revive an old role in this manner, where the director and staff clearly just let them get away with a cameo and a wink to the camera, instead of driving them to re-enter a character and give life to that other person they've forgotten.

The final bit is definitely Riker 20 years later.

Riker yelling at his kid felt pretty natural and Riker-esque to me. I think this show will actually nail the characters, it's the plot that kinda looks dumb so far. That's what annoyed me about Star Trek 2009 and the sequels: I thought the actors nailed the characters pretty well, and there are a lot of great moments and interactions in those films, but the plots are all kinda dumb.

Can't wait. I've been pounding the table for more Picard for a very long time, and for a while (when the shitty Abramsverse films came along) just assumed we'd never get it.

Sure. I see the potential there. Very glass half empty take here, to assume based on so little footage that they screwed up on this front.

But this is based on more than simply a clip or two. It was the reality of the final TNG films as well. In Insurrection, we already see the "movie Picard" (as Mike of Redlettermedia dubs him, noting that he's an entirely new character) instead of the captain as portrayed on the series, and a major factor in that change is transparently the impact of giving Patrick Stewart (and the other actors) way too much of an influence over the writing and portrayal.

Those corny scenes of Picard in the later films, trying to be an action star? Yeah, that's all Stewart's fault, because he's a catastrophic idea man for the character and franchise even if he is a great actor when properly kept in his lane.

Awful adventurer Picard in a leather jacket saving his Milf love in an act of defiance? Yeah, Stewart is noted as asking for that kind of direction, wanted to take up more action and love as he thought that worked in First Contact. He's partly responsible for ruining the run-up to that film, if you read accounts.

This stupidity that feels like a generic, budget action film? Yeah, Stewart absolutely loved it and evidently lobbied to extend these scenes.

Surely they won't let him do that again, right?

Oh...

As for the other actors, the same phenomenon was apparent to a lesser extent with Riker and Troi; she dropped her accent more markedly into the films and didn't seem to care about keeping the old character intact--her drunk scene in First Contact is embarrassing, let's be honest, but she talked it up in interviews as having a chance for some fun she rarely gets in the role... which again goes to the point that you don't let actor fantasies of being a different kind of actor drive your writing or production.

I don't think there's a lot to hang your hopes on here, in short. Some aspects may work (Data's acting seems spot-on, even if he looks horrible), but overall it feels decidedly more like a glamor project for Stewart & friends alongside a cheap chance at credibility by the new franchise producers who have been running the whole thing into the ground since they took over.

EDIT - Let me add that Stewart seems to have badly blended his X-Men role with Picard in the conception here. Pulling together a rag-tag team of talented individuals with different impressive powers and shepherding a mysterious young woman with a strange new ability isn't Picard at all, it's Xavier. Picard was decidedly not a man of such things, and the show went to great lengths to demonstrate just how much effort it often took him to let down his guard and be more of a father figure for moment rather than an authority figure.
