Xbox Game Studios Head Thinks Scarlett Has Big Advantage For Launch

Matt Booty thinks the integrated systems will be a big boon for Microsoft

The gaming industry has a lot of ebb and flow to it. For instance, over the last twenty years or so we’ve seen industry leaders who dominated for one generation or more, stumble and miscalculate at launch to fall behind competition. Microsoft was victim to this with the Xbox One when they gambled poorly on both the price people were willing to pay as well the viability of the Kinect device. It allowed Sony to take back that number 1 slot. Though Microsoft has adjusted their approach to gaming significantly, have they at least learned from their mistakes? Well, only time will tell, but at least one person thinks they have a big advantage.

In an interview with Gamesradar, Xbox Game Studios Head Matt Booty said that Scarlett is going to have an advantage in the way in which Microsoft has integrated their legacy software into the overall brand, making it easier for developers to port games as well as reassure consumers of coming content.

“We want – when you invest in Xbox – to know that you’re bringing that legacy content library with you. It’s why we think we’ve got an advantage with Project Scarlett, because our goal is that any game that runs on an Xbox One will run on Scarlett. You’re not porting to a different operating system; you’re not porting to a different graphics API; you’re just running an Xbox game, right? So we hope that that’s a big advantage in terms of our initial content library.”

We still don’t know the nuts and bolts of a lot what next gen consoles will be like, even if we’ve gotten a decent amount of information about what will be under the hood. Exciting times, and the best of times for all of you who love to console war in the comments.

I’m pretty sure the PlayStation 5 will also be fully backwards compatible with PlayStation 4 games. That’s the benefit of using AMD x86 APU’s two generations in a row.

Noted - GamingBolt is sponsored by Microsoft.

How is this news or journalism at all? This is an ad at best.

Would there ever be a headline "Xbox Game Studio Head Thinks Scarlett is Shit"?

What a load of

It's so fucking cringey.

Well, hopefully they learned from their past mistakes and looking forward on their next Xbox... They can't fuck it up or they can literally jump into the coffin they dug up on this gen. E3 will be NOICE

Considering the fact that they have legacy software experience on Windows I wouldn't be surprised if everything worked form Xbox one worked on Scarlett. That is what I am hoping for at least as I have invested big time into digital on the One. So we shall see what happens.

Hmmm we gonna see, as long as they bring some new IP that looks cool and isn't some story movie game then maybe.

Sony has already confirmed full BC for PS4 as well.

What I wan to know is who will have the first true next gen exclusive, that will take full advantage of next gen machines without being held back by the current gen

Do you think this article is sponsored by Microsoft? And do you think there would be a headline like that with a Sony Exec? Why even bother reading it, if you think it's a load of crap?

edit: R RScrewed - did you even notice that the article isn't even written by GamingBolt? Or were you just in a rush to get in and post an angry comment?

It's so fucking cringey.

This kind of PR "interview" happens very frequently and is always vacuous fluff, but GB has been benefitting both MS and Sony in that regard.

I'm all for calling out marketing BS, but we should do so consistently.

I’m expecting a lot more from Xbox team if they want me to upgrade from the Xbox X. The Xbox X hardware is that great I’m my eyes. I’m expecting their BC will be perfect.

Sony will be Sony and I’ll upgrade my Pro when I feel the time is right. It’s gonna take something huge and mind blowing.

The same as yourself when posting angrily or responding to someone when someone pointed out the very cringy PR talk by matt booty? whether this was written by someone else or gamingbolt. he has a point, what else would someone working for a million dollar corporation say than basically something typical and PR based. yes it's no different than what sony would exactly say but Microsoft is just about as worse. But keep up the good fight though.

I don't give a fuck about old games I already played through. The only advantage backwards compatibility would have for me is to allow me to play past gen exclusives I didn't have access to along with the current console's exclusives. Remind me again what games are exclusive to the Xbox platform... Maybe they will add all old games to their service for Xbox owners new and old or something. That could be compelling for the general console buyer.

Whatever, I will get the Xbox games I want on PC and I am glad MS recognizes the value in that arrangement. I wish Sony would do the same. Heck I'd buy an expensive PS5 "dongle" to let me play digital PS5 games on my PC without the need to buy a PS5 and switch inputs on my receiver.

Yeah sony right out of the gate are going to be pretty comfy. Even if the PS5 launch is a total shit show, they will comfortably sell more than Xbox, quite easy. The PS4 is too big a steam roller for people to ignore, and a lot will jump ship.

I wouldn’t count Xbox out though. Their BC will be much better I feel, and while that doesn’t matter to some of you, it does to a lot. The spec boost is enough to suggest they may even be able to offer a res upgrade to 4k or such on all titles with no developer interaction needed. The X does provide a lot of titles in 4k, but it’s a bit spotty. I can’t see why with this much power, they couldn’t just offer a higher resolution as a simple toggle. Of course, PS5 will likely do the same, but knowing a Sony, I can’t see them doing anything more than PS4, at least stays first.

Game wise... well neither side has shown much of anything. All we have seen is halo infinite and that’s a cross gen title. It’s up in the air who will have the bette looking and playing games but again, I’ll side with history and say Sony due to what their first party can put out. But both sides had a shitty launch really for games this gen.

But as to who will be the overall leader this gen? Well, honestly, it’s not clear to me. You would be a fool to think Sony will lose, but at the same time... cocky stupid as shit Sony are back in a lot of ways, so who knows. MS isn’t pulling any punches and seems to be firing on all cylinders with what they are doing.

Of course you will never convince a fan boy of the other side, regardless of what either side do. But this gen we are going in with what looks to be, for the first time, a seriously good power advantage.

Only one thing is certain... 2020 is going to be an expensive year.

"Every game playable on Xbox One" also includes all the BC Xbox 360 games and Original Xbox games too - people seem to forget that. I bought Panzer Dragoon Orta in 2003 and its going to be playable from the jump on Scarlett. Carrying over my library from all gens of xbox is a huge selling point for me.

At least in the short term, MS is handicapping themselves by making sure all 1st party Scarlet games are cross gen with Xbox One. That wouldn't mean PS5 games are automatically better, but Microsoft game developers just has a lot less to work with.

One thing i will say is, it's depending on which one will have the better games at launch. sony has the studios no doubt, but there is a concern they will rest on their laurels and just pump out what we already know or anticipate that's in development.

A) that’s not actually what’s happening.
B) that would have nothing to do with how good a game can look or be, except in very extreme exceptions.

Come on, the whole point of pc gaming is scalability. My 2080ti can run gorgeous titles but so can a 970. Means nothing in the long run, and even when you get to this extreme examples, that’s way down the line.

I'm not angry. I'm just curious if a) he really thinks Microsoft "sponsors" gamingbolt and b) if he's aware that the article wasn't even written by Gamingbolt.

But keep up the good fight though.

What a well-articulated and thought-provoking argument. Well done.

It is way down the line for Microsoft, but not way down the line for Sony. Microsoft doesn't get to decide when next gen starts. When Sony make a true next gen game for PS5, MS could either respond or get left behind.

Sorry what’s a true next gen game? Does it have to look good? Play good? Have amazing gpu bound features? Awesome cpu bound features?

No, seriously... what’s a true next gen game in your eyes?

Because a generational leap in fidelity doesn’t equal a generational leap in gameplay.

PS5 is bound to have PS4 compatibility though so not really. Although it wouldn’t surprise me if Sony’s solution is not as elegant.

Personally I’m hoping MS take the BC wizardry to a new level. I want the PGR series injected with 8K and ray tracing!

Oh they sure have a big advantage.

They have much more market share to try to conquer than their competition!

You can't have a generational leap in gameplay if you don't have the hardware to allow it. And if you restrict the game to run on Xbox One, then only Xbox One gameplay is possible.

PS5 games have the possibility of having next gen gameplay. Scarlet, at least in the first year or two of launch, have zero chance of next gen gameplay.

Oh, this is gamingbolt... nevermind.

From what I have red in the OP tho, it seems like some kind of corporate speak where they invest a lot of time and energy into something that is not that relevant (compared to what is already out there).

The article is not written by Landon Wright at GamingBolt? If there's more layers to this then that totally got passed me.

Kindly let me know who the actual ineffectual "news outlet" is that's responsible for this drivel so that I can aim my anger accordingly.

Do you think this article is sponsored by Microsoft? And do you think there would be a headline like that with a Sony Exec? Why even bother reading it, if you think it's a load of crap?

It definitely feels as though this is sponsored somehow by Microsoft, do you really not think so? The whole thing reads like an advertisement, not news.

Yes, there are of headlines like this with Sony as well, everyone boasts about their companies and it's cringey. I wasn't singling out Microsoft specifically, but rather "GamingBolt". I'm aware "companiez-r-gunna-companee"

Why did I bother reading it or clicking on it? This is a message board dude. It showed up on the front page of the currently discussed threads, I read the title, had a thought, and posted it. I'm sorry for invading your safe space and for requiring a reply that ensures I throw Sony under the bus too...because for some reason you think I'm a Sony fan or something?

I only purchased a PS4 a few days ago btw, I've had an Xbox One S since launch. (Not that you asked but I suppose you care enough to wanna know since your console warring defense mechanism of a reaction is what you decided to post)

Don't worry man, I'm sure Scarlett will do fine.

You should try reading the article next time. It's quite clear that the interview isn't with Gamingbolt. I'm baffled that you think the extremely short summary on Gamingbolt looks like something that is sponsored. Obviously you don't know astroturfing from reporting.

I couldn't care less if you like Sony, MIcrosoft or both. It's just rather obvious that you came to shit-post about an article you didn't even read.

I wonder who will be the first to reveal all?

We all know how MS' first reveal blunder gave Sony a massive advantage and let them remove their identical DRM plan before anyone noticed.
I def think MS need to announce 2nd.

Messaging is so much more important to MS this gen than Sony. If MS wants they can zing with a power advantage (if they have it) or determine price once Sony announces theirs.

Microsoft is doing a lot right ahead of this next gen.....however, I see them blundering it by going first. I'd rather see them each play chicken until it's like a month before launch. Lol!!!🤪🤪🤪

Nah let's Point out you got highly defensive when he singled out Microsoft in that post. Mind you no one cares if he or anyone said something bad about your favorite corporation and plastic toy but lol c'mon.

Yes, extremely defensive. Almost aggressive, in fact. Jesus.

*shrugs* lol everything you post seems rather defensive of microsoft. So allow me to draw my conclusions as why you got so triggered by rscrewed's post. let alone the countless I've seen from you. Anyway enough, I'd rather not waste my time talking nor arguing with an obvious console warrior 😂
