First details on compatible accessories and peripherals for PlayStation 5

Not good if you want to use a Ps4 controller for the odd split screen game, but for many it doesn't sound like a problem.
If I was planning to buy a PS5, I personally wouldn't care

The OP was very misleading.

Your DS4 works for PS4 games that can be played on the PS5.

The DS4 does NOT WORK for exclusively PS5 games.

none of the features in the new controller will be essential to EVEN A SINGLE GAME that will ever release on PS5. and even if they were, you could then make an exception for those games instead of making the controller incompatible across the board.

also by the same logic Sony would need to ban every third party manufacturer to make controllers that don't have every single feature in the dual sense... and do you think that's gonna happen? do you think there will be Fight Sticks that have adaptive triggers, sixaxis and a touchpad? OR, or will we see third party controllers (including fight sticks) that will miss some or even all these features but will still work with PS5 games...?

but I guess a consumer like you can spin reality like they want in order to fit their narrative.

making the DS4 incompatible is anti consumer in every way. it's ridiculous how there are still shills out there defending this.

and we know this isn't a technology related thing, the PS5 is obviously compatible with the DualShock 4, they officially said it is, just arbitrarily not with PS5 games.

BUT GOOD! how else could Street Fighter 6 be truly next gen if you could play it with an old controller or my old fight sticks? right?

fucking ridiculous
Disagree. Best chance for new features being implemented is by making them a baseline. I prefer new features, you may not and that's fine.

Never mind that...what happened to Kinect?

Microsoft sure is trying their darndest to erase Kinect from history and pretend that it didn't exist.
No Kinect? even Sony is forward supporting the PS4 camera, not to mention PSVR.

Anti consumer MS sinking to new lows. 😜

All those generation old advanced features. What is with people.. Making excuses for anti consumerism

Methinks once casual Xbox players get to play on their friends PS5 with all of the new features and notice the difference between experiences there is going to be a change of tone

Its not about the engine or anything that technological, its purely about QA, specifically cert checking.
So they're removing compatibility to help relieve developers of the smallest percentage of their overall efforts, efforts that they'll have to make elsewhere anyway.

And the collateral damage of that just happens to be people having to buy new expensive controllers.

Well, that's okay then.

Directly answering whether DualShock 4 controllers will work for PS5 games, the blog post added: 'No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we're bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.' ...

I wouldn't want to use an old Ps4 controller as my main controller since the battery life in mine is pretty shot now anyways.

I was hoping to be able to use my old controllers as extras for other people to use. I don't know many people that game so I don't play with others too much, but it would save some money not having to buy new controllers for guests.

I wonder if the DualSense features are really so important that it makes pratically impossible to play using a DualShock 4.

I mean, it's nice to have more advanced rumble, but that's far from an insurmountable compatibility obstacle.

Makes sense. If they allowed it, it would contradict their radical departure rhetoric:

"DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5's launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months."

– Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment

Making all the right moves. Feels like we're repeating everything now.

Time for new info to put the spark back into our relationship.

Shitty move by Sony. Most 3rd party games won't use the PS5 Controllers new capabilities and features. Sony is forcing people to purchase new controllers for local multi-screen co-op...

I mean Xbox one software fits all will already be holding back innovation in gameplay for 3rd party games so why hold back PlayStation exclusives with the DS4? I'm pretty sure there will be enhanced PS4 games that will use DS4.

If a new controller offers much better ergonomics along with newer set of features, why would i want to use an older controller? It's like buying a brand new car and cribbing it doesn't have cassette tape for audio songs when it comes with bluetooth and usb pen drive options

No idea yet but the PS4 controllers work on the PS5 when playing PS4 games.

WIth the new features I wouldn't expect them to but it would be nice to know if I can have a clean break from my Pro and sell the thing.

Except you don't buy a new car for better ergonomics, likely you buy it when the older one breaks.
A more fitting example would be: from now on, for totally arbitrary reasons, Gas stations will refuse your car. Buy a new one.

Also: do we know what these DualSense features are? Just a better vibration?

Imagine spending $100s of dollars on scuff controller for PS4 finding out its not compatible for PS5. Ouch..
It will be compatible with PS5 but not with PS5 games from what I understand.

Edit: yep
'the DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games'.

So it's likely some feature it has that the DS4 lacks. Like maybe the whole back of the controller is a touchpad with assigned buttons or something, like the vita.

I'll be selling mine or giving it away to a children's charity.

This year has really taught me to stop hoarding old stuff I don't use, even if I want to hold on to it for sentimental reasons. Gave away all my old consoles and games for kids in need due to covid a month ago. Now all I have left is my PC and a ps4 pro and my life hasn't changed one bit but I know the 5 consoles I gave away are being put to good use.

So consumer focused and friendly. Sony keeps on winnininniiniing.

It's crazy if you think about it. What if it was a requirement to buy a next gen PS5 in order to play PS5 games.

It would be absolute madness.

Imagine spending a $100 premium on a Xbox One for Kinect only to find out it won't be compatible at all for future Xbox consoles.

Nevermind. No need to imagine. Millions of people did. (most successful console launch in MS history)

Honestly speaking, who cares? You're getting the next gen console with a next gen controller to play next gen games.

At the very least we'll be able to use the DS4 for PS4 back compat games. I'm more than okay with that and you should be too.

Hardly unexpected, is it? And not anything that can be complained about. I mean, 360 controllers didn't work on the One, did they?

I know as somebody that is likely to buy the XSX over the PS5, that I'm gonna be slightly underwhelmed on unboxing day at how similar everything is going to look and feel in comparison to my X1X (but all will be forgiven when the games look and run better).

I had a robbery about 10 years ago during the end of the 360/ps3 era and lost everything gaming wise and while I was crushed at the time it really put a lot of things into perspective on my hobby and how I was hoarding for the sake of hoarding because it was my hobby. I had hundreds of 360 games, a majority I never finished and had zero inclinationto finish. Since then, I now too am of the mindset of get rid of it when I am done with it.

Nothing surprising. It only really is a bummer for people who buy scuffs or other customizable peripherals. I only feel bad for people with fighting sticks. It always sucks to tear apart and changes the internal components and motherboard.

They added FIFA 14 so you actually paid 40 bucks for Kinect and look for how much it sells on ebay even in 2020.

It's got haptic feedback which is considered as game changer in immersion. It's got adaptive triggers that will make you feel the tension of pulling the trigger in a rifle on the controller or when using a bow and arrow. It's got better battery life. I'd say wait until you experience it for yourself.

Well that was as expected.
With hat large userbase imagine how many lost sales of dualsense controllers that would be.
I don't blame them, hope the controller is a major step up from the PS4 DS though.
