Sony's fiscal year ends in the Spring. Those extra consoles won't be ready for Holiday.

You laugh, but at 18 with my first credit card, I went to the local mall to pop in to the food court for a burger. The court was adjacent a Sears. I left with a $2,100 (U.S.) Compaq Pentium II 450.

Actually, it's not a rumor. It's Sony's one email. In it it states that they will select people to send invitations to based on unknown criteria ahead of when pre orders go live for them, stating a time they can try to be among the first to get them. It also states that those not selected won't receive any notice. So.. yeah.. a lottery selection.. from Sony.

Put it this way one of the recent Capcom shareholding meetings. It was revealed that there was only 5% of sales coming from xbox. 5% on big franchise games. Do you really think PS would pay more for deals ,when xbox is putting out 5% in sales?? You can bet that there are more shocking numbers throughout other games/publishers. PS will be paying market value based of their data metrics.

There's many other things going on behind the scene's on the political side. But i want to keep this short. The PR & media push Xbox has been doing with Gamepass is probably not going down well in the industry. PS cant get all the deals so we thought ,but yet all xbox has is indie devs game. That kind of tells you where they are at.

Much appreciated. It's certainly been a year to remember for all of us, and I thank my lucky stars often for the fortunate position my wife and I are in, especially as we had our first child not long before shit hit the fan this year.

I don't disagree that Xbox was fighting an impossible battle here, I'm merely suggesting they had to at least make the attempt is all. They still have channel and partner relationship managers who's sole purpose is to go after and secure these types of deals and benefits for their platform, even as difficult a challenge it was for them with a much poorer value proposition than Sony. However, I didn't realize how wide the gap and dire their situation was looking at those numbers you provided. I was coming at it more from the perspective of my industry where the competition is much fiercer with quite a few more players in the mix. I'm a creative type on the marketing side and financial strategy was never my forte so thanks for the insight lol.

Gamepass in general just leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. Granted I'm not the target audience, but you're right that it's not been a strategy well received by publishers (evident by major publisher's refusal to participate in the program). We can be sure that's just the beginning of the pushback but I expect Xbox to regroup and pivot it's messaging again.

At the end of the day I not only feel bad for consumers in the Xbox ecosystem but I hope it doesn't cause complacency on Sony's side. The good news is Sony leadership has a clear vision with all its pieces in place to have another stellar generation. It will just be up to the consumers even more so this time, and not the competition, to keep them humble.
 
The problem is taking too much stock in theoretical paper specs over real world performance. Sure one system has a higher raw compute, but does it hit those peaks on average in actual performance is the question.

First, I'll have to wait for 120Hz TVs get sold in my country and then wait for them to lower from an insane crazy high price before I start to care about 120fps in games.

But if that report is accurate, Sony wants to sell 10 million PS5s in the same time period that they sold 7.5 million PS4s.

So either that report is false, or Sony is overestimating demand, or the PS5 price is lower than I think it is.

Late 2020 certainly widens the possible launch window vs holiday ( It doesn't necessarily mean later than originally intended) so I'm leaning towards this meaning a more flexible launch date.
Although it wouldn't be the first time US centric messaging had to change due to international pushback, I have doubts Sony with decades of global product launch experience, would have put out messaging not applicable to an international audience.

Yeah, I'd say this change is to keep a global perspective on things. Nobody else in the world calls it 'Holiday' season other than the Americans, so it makes sense to change to the more generic 'late 2020'.
 
Maybe Sony are now firm/locked in on a release date that is before the 26th November/thanksgiving/Holiday (rumour is 13th Nov) ergo they changed to 'late' 2020?

See my comment above (as well as others who beat me to it :messenger_smirking:) It's more likely that they're avoiding the US centric 'Holiday'. The rest of us just call it winter. The only actual holiday we have is Christmas.

Yep, bypassing the middle man and selling some directly to customers would alleviate subsiding blow to the console price.

This strategy tells me they are putting things in place to deal with high demand. Now, part of that could well be due to Covid, and the inevitable disruption of supply routes because of it. But... the fact they're producing so many units so fast, and that they are now taking measures to handle pre-order pressure in the US, does rather suggest it's going to be cheaper than we might think.

I remember you talked about production before in regards to these systems so I have some questions if you want to answer them.

I can't remember the figure you gave but I believe you said around 10 million units for the Series X. Is that still on track for launch?

Also have you heard anything about a possible delay for Xbox? There was talk that these systems might get a delay but now Sony is pretty much in the clear im just curious about Xbox now.

Weird, did it previously say Holiday 2020 in the UK? I hope they aren't pushing the release date back a little in the UK, hopefully it is a global launch on the same day!

It could be a tiered release. With some countries getting it in November and others in December. They are still saying 2020 btw.

Food for thought. They always said it would be the end of 2020 do they can play around with the dates a little before announcing anything officially. If the delay goes beyond 2020 they will definitely announce that via PlayStation Blog or an official press release. And they won't take long to announce it because stores need to know about the delay ahead of time.

Not sure, to be honest, but I think it's just a matter of how you think of it. "Late 2020" is much more fluid than "Holidays 2020", since "Late" can mean anything from end of October to end of December, in my book.

I don't think so. They've just changed the language, because 'Holiday 2020' means nothing in the UK. I doubt there's much to worry about.
 
COD has cross gen MP? Why? Imagine playing a MP with 60FPS vs 120 FPS, that's not fair. What about this super fast loading but then your waiting for previous gen console players to enter lobby/game?

I like my MP games on console as its more fair when compared to PC, less hardware variance and closes system (hack's and mods etc)
 
Can someone please post the official statement where Sony says they are ramping up PS5 production to 10 million units? That number keeps getting thrown around on this site and i do remember reading it but don't remember ever seeing official confirmation.

This is starting to feel like US is getting priority with staggered release to the rest of the world (Maybe US and Japan priority?) as more units become available.
 
PS4 was released first in USA & Canada. Jimmy Sony has said they want 1 global PS5 launch, but covid might have constrained supply so they might need to prioritize their biggest market (USA).

I could see USA getting just pre-orders first, or also get shipments first, or neither and it will all launch worldwide. Idk.
