Xbox Series S Revealed (Brad Sams) - $299 Price

Great news, will be picking up one for my son to go along with my Series X, his TV is a 1080p Plasma so it's perfect for Xmas present. Since the CPU and SSD are on par I'm hoping it's just a resolution cut and maybe ray tracing.

It's a solid price but I'm still not sold on that strategy at least at initial release. Most early adopters adopt for power and not 1080p TVs.
Considering how cheap 4k TVs have been getting this seems like the least future-proof option out there.

My PS4 games look great on my 4k tv. Just because people will eventually upgrade their TV doesn't make the console upgrade required. People are connecting their Switch to 4k tvs as well. No biggie.

Still really wish it didn't exist. Just wish other developers wouldn't have to deal with it for the next 7 fucking years.

Poor devs are going to make more money, boohoo. I bet you also wish the Switch didn't exist since the poor devs have to squeeze The Witcher 3 on there and drown in more money. The humanity.

A solid 1080p/1440p console, couple that with Gamepass and you got a great gaming option for those on a budget.

It's also not hampered by that Jag CPU.

At 4 tflops, this GPU would have fewer tflops than the ps4 pro. The rdna 2.0 architecture gains might put this to around 5 Polaris tflops, but that's still barely above the ps4 pro.

By far the weakest next gen console of all time with just a 2x increase over the base ps4.

I wish MS nothing but bad luck because if this thing is a success, it will force Sony to release a the ps5 fraud version at 4 tflops and handicap not just this gen but every gen going forward.

Imagine if the ps6 series s was only 20 tflops. Imagine if the Xbox one was only 400 gflops.

The success of this console will be worse than the wii ever was to gaming.

Did a real person actually write this? Does this person know who the S is aimed at?

87 percent of the population has 1080p tv not 4k

Who the fuck is this targeted for

Folk like my boy, who at 16 has a 43 inch 1080p TV in his room, and not a lot of disposable income? The PS5 and Xbox Series X are total overkill for him.

Your average parent buying consoles for demanding youngsters?

I guess it's just not for sweary forum dwellers!

You have to be the dumbest person on this forum.

I love how you conveniently skip the fact just how much faster the XSS is than the PS4 Pro on all fronts. Sure, if you rip out the SSD, replace the CPU, reduce the memory BW and ignore the RT, it's "only" 25% faster than the PS4 Pro.

But we don't do that, do we?

The XSS is much faster than the PS4 Pro, and it's about the same price. Best value for money in the business, as of right now.

Thanks Microsoft... if it was up to Sony, we should start getting prices after the console release.
Still no official specs for the Xbox Series S... but 300€ to play Xbox current/future games and Gamepass in Full HD. Not bad at all.

Makes sense...
Xbox Series S for Full HD TV's
Xbox Series X for 4k TV's.

Its like a perfect 2nd console, even if you are the biggest Sony fanboy. Just get Gamepass on it and you can also play every Xbox first party, and console exclusive for 'free', all for $299.
I bet even a few of the radicals on here will buy one. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

For a person like me - PC gamer and not following the console market:
Whats the big deal here?
Is it much, or cheap?
Is it the main XBOX console?

Not everyone can afford next gen consoles. Xbox Series S will still sell like hotcakes with families and kids, and those that don't want to spend much on a console.

The Series S has been tuned to be at least as powerful as an Xbox One X in the GPU department, whilst being hugely more powerful in every other.

I think we can safely say that MS know what they're doing when it comes to the Xbox hardware, It's just the software side of things where they seem to be doing their best to destroy the Xbox brand as a viable alternative to Sony.

The no disc drive is kind of a mind fuck. It allows the console to be even cheaper because the digital revenue cut but will retailers even want to carry this thing. It's weird stores will carry games but for the more expensive console sku. Hopefully parents are trained now with digital purchases for phones that they get jimmy digital currency and not the physical game.
Game boxes may even just have Xbox series X compatible branding.

Still don't understand why it exists.

Halo effect, nVIDIA and Intel like strategy. Hype your fan base on the performance of the high end model you plan more limited quantities of (to save money) and get them to compare the competition to a model they will not buy anyways and then try to flood the market with more profitable lower end consoles.

I don't know.

I just hope this box doesn't hamstring the entirety of next gen turning it in just 4 teraflop games uprezzed to 4K.

It would suck if this goes PC and all you get from the high budget boxes is better shadows and AA.

I really hope I'm wrong and that scenario will not happen.

The price is good obviously, but IF the PS5 DE is $399, is the XSS really that enticing anymore? If for just $100 more you can get a proper next gen console?

Of course not.

People are vastly overestimating the target market for this, especially with the state of Xbox's mindshare at the moment.

Same CPU as the big boys. Same SSD. Same architecture. This is a 1080p30fps box vs the 4K60FPS that the PS5 and Series X are. They're not setting the floor low.
You should probably correct this.

Same CPU as the big boys. Same weaker SSD of the XSX. Same architecture of the XSX.

Not sure why the thread with the official announcement was closed...oh well.

Anyway it will be interesting to see how this does at launch

87 percent of the population has 1080p tv not 4k

And what % of that are gamers and early next-gen adopters? It's not like your grandma needs a Series X/S or PS5. Face it, people who really want next gen early are those excited by 3080/90RTX and high-end hardware and they probably already have 4k TVs since last gen.

Yes this may sell next-gen for gamers who don't have 1k disposable income but the increment is not going to be too big if this is locked at 1080p (which is has to be otherwise devs would need to optimise for 4TF machine at higher res?)

Looking at that DF video on how a 4tf console scales I would expect 1440p early on with cross gen games and then 1080p as next gen only games ramp up.

Really can't wait to see how say Far Cry 6 compares on Series S and X1X, going to be interesting!
