The only option I feel works for Sony is Square they have the deep roots that where formed out of the famous schism between Square and Nintendo in the early 90s

They have financial connections with Square(they invested in them at the turn of the century) and they have done a lot of deals with them in regards to exclusives

Either way the real solution is to lower them European game prices and put a tighter leash on Jim Ryan, it's been nothing but nonsense from him

A 400 euro PS5 is still a good deal, but them 80 euro games are obscene
I agree.

Sony doesn't need to respond but if they do, I'd like them to get a Japanese studio to bolster Japan Studios so that they can get some actual games out in a timely fashion.

Sony has many but many studios who afe the best in the industry.
Beat graphics best exclusives that sell millions and are in the top 10 for months.

Please show me another axbox exclusive that was in the charts as of late.

With the latest ghost of zuccini tell me why does sony need to buy more studios?

For example look what microsoft did with insomniac. And look what sony did with them once they came back home realizing how much better it is for them to work under sony.

You need to read what you said and then evaluate this situation. Doom, fallout, the elder scrolls, Wolfenstein, these are not just ordinary cheap franchises. These are some that have acquired huge fanbases and years of exposure to media. while I do enjoy sony exclusives, and think some of them are the best in the industry. this is however major news and now who knows who is next that microsoft will scoop up.

Nah, I don't want them to. This is not how I want next gen to go. I don't see a giant buying war as the way the industry moves forward, at least I hope not. So far Phil has said that they're honoring all current contracts, but moving forward all other games will be "coming to other consoles on a case by case bases" I don't know if all those franchises will eventually go full exclusive, but if it happens it happens. Sometimes that's just the way it goes, it's going to suck but yea. They're running a business and they need people to get on their platform. If you can't beat them, buy them, it's what a lot of tech giants do. Why start from scratch when someone is already 75% of the way there? it's cheaper to just buy them up.

It should be very telling to see how people respond IF that happens. I'm sure some people will be happy, I suspect it's the same bunch who get really upset when something they wanted is exclusive to a different platform. But, I suspect Bethesda games to still be on other platforms for a few more years, at least, they still need to recoup that 7.5Billion.

After years of proven track record for releasing good PS exclusives, and after the mega success that was Spider-Man, did Sony decided to pony up $229million (measly in comparison to this Bethesda deal) for Insomniac. Sony aren't going to drop billions on acquiring a 3rd party studio just as a reaction to MS doing this.

They didn't respond to any of the past acquisitions... this is just laying down and getting run over. It's sad.

They're in a tricky spot tbh, they can't compete on these terms.

I think they need a corporate rethink of strategy to remain competitive long term. They are currently on a Sega path IMO - I know that sounds odd to many at the moment, but that's what the Sega fans thought when Sony came in and decided they were going to be the big boys in this playground.

History is prone to repeating itself and Microsoft just took Sony's lunch money. (Can't wait for my PS5 to arrive though).

Sony needs to start taking advantage of the Japanese Market advantage and stop taking it for granted. They need to be on the phone with either Square Enix, Capcom, take 2 or the company that owns from software and asking them what their price is to sell. Meanwhile consider smaller publishers Tecmo koie or level 5 as well. Hell ask bungie what their price is. And finally put a ring on blue point game immediately. This radio silence, we're too good to talk about anything 5 related, its all good laid back attitude is out the window. This is war, act like it. And for those saying "They dont need to do anything," Yes they do. You cannot let this go unanswered. Yes im aware take 2 isnt japanese.
Stop acting like a child

Sony already has 1st party studios churning out best selling/best scoring games and have been leading the worldwide market for a long time so they don't really need to do anything honestly.

They only need to respond if Xbox declares those Zenimax games as exclusive to Xbox only. But when you've just spent 750bill are you really going to turn down the chance to sell to both side per unit cut?

This is the tipping point for MS, if they do not make them Xclusive then it's a clear signal that they don't want to fight Sony anymore, they just wanna make more $$$$$$ and then their acquisition makes no sense.

It will more likely be first on gamepass and then ps5 later but that won't be enough. Exclusives is what drives hardware sales.
They can sell to PS owners when the buy an Xbox. duh

What 1st party launch games are MS releasing for series X?

Sony Doesnt do shit apart from sell 110million+ units. And release exclusive after exclusive with many of them being game of the year...

What else you want them to do? There a console and game making company. Everyone of there consoles has sold more than any console made apart from the wii.
and they sell millions of great games...

Your an idiot if you think they do shit lol
The Medium is not coming to the PS5

Of course they can compete.

They don't have to use only cash.

Target the main 3 or so companies.... TakeTwo, Capcom and Square along with a smaller From acquisition.

Buy a large amount of TT stock to protect from MS acquisition and give some control in future decisions.
Buy Capcom and Square using cash, stock and debt (16-17 billion total)
Buy Kadowkawa with cash 1.5 Billion

Lets say that is 17-18 billion in cash and another 7-8 in debt and stock. That is the industry locked down.

They don't have the balls but I would try it.

Rare once was the top of the top till microsoft bought them.
I play for over 34 years. I followed the industry almost from day one.
This is my personal experience .

Yes these are big franchises and if you think back xbox had most of these as exclusive on the original xboc like morrowind but my worry is what will these turn into under gamepass??

Or will bethesda be more mobile focused like with c and c etc?

Look what happend to fallout. Fallout 76 was garbage lets not forget.
So with the combination of a degrading bethesda and a gamepass machine microsoft the future looks grimm

To me the white whale of consoles is Rockstar. Whoever can buy them and make them exclusive would 100% win the future console war on the turn of a press release.

Putting it this way, buying Rockstar is the ONLY thing that would ever make me buy another Microsoft console.

Just keep on keeping on Sony. Invest in your own studios and make every single one a AAA dev. Just look at how Guerilla and Sucker Punch have grown and how masterful they have become.

What I meant when I said they can't compete is that Microsoft has a ton of headroom to step it up many more levels, whereas Sony would be pretty much remortgaging everything on even trying to match this one move...

From Software would be a good buy for them but they are the definition of niche. I think Take Two and Capcom are beyond their reach TBH.

Microsoft definitely fired their big guns this morning.

There is no way Sony will buy a big publisher.

But they do have the money (way less than MS, ofc), infraestructure, talent and the mind share. They can work around as long as they don't shoot themselves on the foot. lol

Anyway, nothing indicates MS will stop with the acquisitions. So, hold on to your butts.

Does not matter if Bethesda games will still release on PlayStation. The point is, you will be able to play all these games using game pass. This is a much more sensible option than paying 70Usd for each game.

They should not, but this consolidation trend will only accelerate. Expect other big players to gobble up studios and even publishers left and right, conscious that they are of the necessity to differentiate themselves on the exclusive content front. Awful move by MS, buying their way to relevance, but a step that all should have seen coming given their resources. The video games landscape will change dramatically in the next few years...

I see so much "they should buy this studio to even the odds"...
This isn't just a studio acquisition... this is buying an entire publisher!!

Sony would have to buy Square or Take two or UBI to even those odds.

Im not saying they should do anything reactionary at all but thats the level that MS just lit up cigars to ..

Backwards compatibility for the PS1, PS2 and PS3 (to the degree that it's feasible given licenses and tech issues) would've been a fine idea, given the Playstation's massive library of classics, but they seem to be against that for some reason.

Even if Sony has the cash to buy something like Rockstar (huge if), I just can't see them making the flagship games permanently excusive. The value of the brand would include the money the pub makes from Xbox. Laying out billions and simultaneously rejecting revenue from a third of the console install base (plus whatever share they have next gen) sounds like a bad business decision. I suppose its possible that number crunchers would disagree if expands the PS5 base enough while letting Sony take 100% of revenue. But even then why would they forego that much extra revenue from a game consistently in the charts year after year after year?

This is the key point, and arguably the key difference in philosophy - Sony is increasing the price and saying you have no choice but to come to us and pay it, while Microsoft is trying to use the potential of a mass market to make their products accessible to everyone more affordably, and gambling that this will pay off and result in magnitudes more cash in the long run.

Absolutely fucking fascinating to watch.

Sony cant afford big publisher acqusitions. Ur talking a $78billion company vs a $3 trillion company here.
Best hope for sony is continue their high quality first party output and continue to try and secure console exclusivity or timed exclusivity

Sony doesn't have to do anything. They still have a broader global appeal than MS does and will still dominate the console market. MS will never outsell Sony worldwide so they'll focus on trying to appeal to those who aren't brand loyal, those who can afford two consoles, and PC gamers. I wouldn't be surprised to see most of these games still come to the PlayStation, the difference will be whether you pay full price for them or $15 a month in a subscription service.

I think it looks pretty cool. But won't know till it actually comes out and can be played.
I like the concept of the split screen but i cant tell if its just to show the 2 worlds at once for demo sake or if its like that in the game.

Interesting title for sure.

95 billion vs 1.5 trillion

No need to exaggerate, it's already big enough a difference.

I guess all the Craig memes finally got to Phil and he went SSJ.

No bets on what Sony would do in response but next gen will be more interesting than I thought.

It's either Square Enix or Capcom. I much rather see Capcom since Square is already more or less on Sony's pocket (if it wasn't clear enough - similar to EA's "relationship" with MS).
