Are they?

Or will Sony outsell them again because normal people don't give a shit about a lot of this console warring?

They have major console sellers after acquiring new IPs for their brand. These "normal" people love these games. Elder Scrolls and Fallout are major IPs.

There's a reason why Sony is locking up exclusive deals from third party devs, and that's because it brings people to their platform. People can't sit here and say it really has no impact on Xbox when Fallout and Elder Scrolls still very big titles.

And how much in liabilities? Do you have any idea how much making the PS5 and having to sell it at the Xbox dictated price is costing them?
I think Insomniac was Sony's main purchase for this generation. Like they said themselves, they called every major publisher and tried to secure exclusives. It turns out Microsoft was calling publishers and trying to buy their umbrella company.
Xbox X is more expensive to build than PS5 imo.
Sony is probably losing money on DE model though.

Both MS and Sony called every publisher to try to secure exclusives... the issue is that MS need to pay more than Sony to secure them due the difference in userbase.

Both MS and Sony were in talk to buy ZeniMax Media... MS ended making the deal.

Well i dont think they NEED to do anything but i always would have liked a Paystation that could play Nintendo games (or vice versa). So, partner up with Nintendo would do the trick... But in all honousty: Sony does not have to do anything. FIFA, COD and all studio's that dont want to be ripped off by some Gamepass deal will stay at PC and PS5 (if PS5 will sell great)

You bring up FIFA, yet EA Play is being added to Gamepass. Sure, you don't get the latest FIFA game on day of release, but you do get it about 6 months after release. So your argument does not make sense.

Major IPs that are largely played on PC. How many people bought playstations for fallout, as compared to a Sony exclusive?

I feel like this type of news is always overhyped, and everyone freaks out, but look at the actual sales numbers. Most people won't care about this news, because it won't change their buying habits. It's not going to convince many people to throw away their Sony library, and we will see that this holiday season.

All you have to do is look at switch sales, to see how off-base and wrong a lot of predictions about this industry are.

EA access being added to gamepass does not make it exclusive tot xbox. The EA access model that has been added to GP is about €4,99 a month and still very much on PS4/PS5.

Yup, great points. I enjoyed Skyrim, but it being on the ps3 was not a dealbreaker one way or the other, I have never made a console purchase based off of one title, or even worse here, the potential for certain titles. Microsoft has a history of not doing much with the studios they have acquired in the past.

This console warring is getting beyond stupid at this point.

I've had gamepass on PC since it's inception. In the very beginning, it wasn't as good as gamepass for Xbox. They had more games and better ones available. Not long after, the catalog really started to take off. Fast forward to today, and gamepass is even more compelling than it's ever been! I can't wait to see what other bombs MS, Sony, Epic, Steam, etc are going to drop on us in the upcoming days.

You said the FIFA studio does not want to be ripped off by some Gamepass deal, yet they are on Gamepass. I was not arguing that they are not on anything else. I was just saying your argument is flawed when you state a developer does not want to be ripped off by some Gamepass deal when they are on Gamepasss. It does not make any logical sense.

It's major gaming news. I don't know why you think most people don't care about this news.

It's a major acquisition and it's not something that wouldn't have an impact on the Xbox brand.

This is not about convincing most people to throw away their Sony library, it's about becoming more competitive in the gaming industry. If you think Sony would be ok by just standing still, then you're completely wrong.

Are you 15? Lol. Some of you guys are study cases.

Not at all, and i actually have two degrees, one in psychology. I love case studys. You're getting mad at me for Kenny Rogers words. When he says you have to know when to fold them, when to hold them, when to walk away when to run. Sony needs to do that, not try to snap up the industry, cause they cant keep up. FACTS. Dont poke the bear. And where were all your 15 year old comments at people falling all over themselves because Sony got spiderman exclusive. MS just bought half the industry. I just went to sleep earlier and when I woke up again I thought I was dreaming. Allow me to have a little fun here at the Sony Lodge bro. You dont wake Godzilla.

I don't get all the doom and gloom. Microsoft made a big dick move. Sony has a lot of great studios who make great games already. With little room for missteps for games in a competitive new generation, quality this gen should be top notch for whatever platform you play on.

Also, PC for the fucking dub

Release TLOU 2 special edition with Abbey and Dina cut from the game, and Joel lives. Add some ray tracing, and factions for good measure. = win

This is literally what I said. While technically they can, they can't, because Sony as a whole won't want to spend 1/4 of their money on a game publisher purchase.
That is not literally what you said. What you literally said was they do not have the money to do so and they do. What Sony sees as a sensible acquisition is not up to you to determine. This is a company that has 8 billion earmarked for capital expenditure each year and has one of the largest r&d budget in the world.

nothing. keep developing great games like they have been and slowly build their playstation studios instead of throwing money against a wall

7.5 billion could set up 75 AAA studio and fund 75 AAA first party games, that's what an obscene amount of money it is. TV TV TV era MS could have funded and marketed over 50 Summer Block Buster movies and become one of the largest movie studios in the world with that amount of money.

Sony doesn't need to do anything. They have a well priced next gen console with a history of producing great games.

If they wanted to be dicks they could probably keep Final Fantasy from Xbox.

I think the onus is still on Microsoft to prove they can produce an exclusive lineup that rivals Sony. Microsofts lineup is all potential right now - they dont have the GOTY material like TLOU2 / God of War / Spiderman, etc.

Are there any publishers out there, with similar amount of useless IP up for sale? Except for Fallout (ip is ded to me, but u never know), Elder Scrolls ... there is nothing worth in the portfolio of bethesda (imho).

modern doom is overrated as fuck < wolfenstein is better ... that´s like 4x ips for nearly 8 billion. Not sure if that was a good deal after all.

Sony will not respond. They will continue to make consoles and rely on their first party studios that they currently have to make the top tier games they have been making for years. No offense to MS, I'm an Xbox gamer too, but MS has acquired big studios in the past that have not lived up to expectations.
I do wonder if any big developers will leave this studio like how Rare talent left after a little

I think the only real gamechanger here is the Elder Scrolls franchise. Skyrim is probably the most successful rpg of all time; if it's successor is exclusive to Xbox, then that's quite the loss for Sony. It's a much bigger deal than FFXIII or any other franchise associated with Playstation going multiplatform. While the other Zenimax IPs (Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein, Dishonored, The Evil Within etc.) are nothing to sneeze at, I don't think they would truly move the needle in any serious way.

As for as a possible 'response', well, the only other publishers with an equally impressive catalogue of IPs whose worth should be in the same ballpark as Zenimax are Capcom and Square Enix. There's Konami too, but they don't do much AAA development these days, so Sony might as well just buy their IPs. But without additional development studios, who is going to make those games? I assume Sony's own studios are all busy with their own projects already, which is why such an acquisition would only make sense if it included new studios. In this regard Capcom and SE would have much more to offer. Between those two, Capcom would probably be the less expensive one, while SE's catalogue of IPs is stronger imo (and Dragon Quest would be a huge boon for the Japanese market).

Sony could definitely do it; hell, they could buy both of them, if they really wanted to. The question is if they think it would be worthwhile to do so. Personally, I'm not sure if it would even be necessary. It depends if those rumors about Sony moneyhatting major 3rd party games are true.

If Sony had to buy something i think they would have to buy Square Enix.
I think their games are very playstation-like.

In the future i sense an alliance between American companies and another alliance between japanese companies.

Sony could be asking big tech like Amazon to invest into their gaming business so they have more money to expand their lineup.

Soon cloud will be powering up gaming and Sony will need a partner for this. Amazon could be a good choice for them

No sane publisher will sell to Sony. Sony means locking to PS Consoles. Selling to Microsoft is a MUCH better value proposition, especially since they can keep things the same, only difference being release Game Pass day 1. Sony simply doesn't have a presence beyond consoles.

That alone is a non-starter for many large acquisitions.

Continue to produce AAA ambitious games. Expand studios. Work on multiple games at the same time. They don't need to spend billions.

Capcom would be a good fit, but really we shouldn't be encouraging the purchasing of massive publishers. It doesn't encourage competition and only benefits the buyer.

I hope nothing. Turning major publishers into first party devs is awful for the industry

But if Sony were to go down this path a few are good picks

Square Enix - they have a very complimentary library to Sony. FF has major ties to Playstation and fills the RPG gap. Tomb Raider does as well, and they both have existing partnerships with Marvel

Take2 - beyond the obvious of Rockstar, Sony would also become a major multiplatform sports publisher with both NBA and MLB

Konami - only value is their IPs, of which I'd argue only Metal Gear would move the needle

When are the next Elder Scrolls and Fallout games coming out, though? TES6 probably won't enter full production until Starfield is done, and that game doesn't even have a release window yet. And as far as anyone knows, there is no Fallout game planned at all. We might seriously be looking at a 5 year wait here before we get a new game from either franchise, and no casual console gamer is going to base their console purchasing decision on games that are that far off.

Buy.... EA! Make star wars, mass effect and dragon age great again!

But seriously though, they should just focus on delivering great games. Acquiring studios is an impressive move but that doesnt really guarantee great products.

Elder and Fallout will move consoles. It's not going to make a major shift in the industry and have millions of gamers give up on PlayStation. They're just going to be way more competitive.

Don't respond. Keep doing what you're doing and only make acquisitions when they are most beneficial. Stuff like Bluepoint and Housemarque imo. We don't need a nuke arms race in this market.

Buying konami gaming division or square enix or bungie, or multiple smaller studios like from software and bluepoint.

According to Moore's Law (this was posted on Resetera ) Sony had acquired studios.

What that may or may not be, it still remains to be seen or even if its true. He did say before that God of War was going to be revealed soon and he got this information from RedGamingTech.

Tell us more cireza...
Sure.

My favorite animal is the cat. Always loved these free and independent creatures.
I had long hair for around 20 years but eventually decided to make them short. It was quite a great change, but surprisingly it was easier for my kids than for my colleagues.
Having tried bike mountain downhill once, I can tell you it is definitely a scary experience. Still was great fun, but I feel safer playing Lonely Mountain Downhill now.

Elder yes, but that's a ways out. The Fallout IP has taken a beating lately and frankly, just isn't worth what it used to be.

If MS made this purchase for these IPs predominately, they're desperate. If they did it for the development houses, let's hope they put them to good use and help push them along better than Zenimax ever could.
