I turned the tiles at the top first so the rising water stream wouldn't spin the lower ones. I posiotioned myself so that I would only spin one tile horizontally.

The time compression is weird. I'm at 30 shines on Sunshine, and it's been a few days. That took me weeks as a child, and 64 took me months, lol.
I have to wonder exactly how bad at games I was back then, hahaha.

Playing Galaxy on handheld feels so wrong. No I'm not going to collect star bits by TOUCHING my screen, wtf, feels nasty and wrong and cumbersome.
On the flipside, playing it on my giant 90 inch screen with detached joy-cons is a bliss. Reminds me of 2007 and what a masterpiece this game was and still is. I 100 percented this game three times back in the day (with green stars AND doing it all again as Luigi) and I'm probably gonna do it again.

Finished SMG with 120 Stars. Love this game! I'd say this will be one of my top games of last gen.

I still love sunshine after all this time. As great Mario platformers like odyssey and the galaxies have come along and received universal acclaim compared to sunshine's mixed reception, over the years I sort of talked myself out of sunshine being great and regarded it as merely good. But now I think I was right the first time. It does have its flaws, but it has unique strengths as well. I'll go into detail with my feelings about it in the GotY voting thread.
But now I gotta play through Galaxy and 100% it as well! Maybe playing Galaxy again will make me reassess my reassessment of sunshine.
I really like playing through and comparing all these classics at the same time.

Yeah, the Dreadnaught is insane. But so rewarding, like many levels in older Mario games. Shame how Odyssey, as fun as it is, don't offer the same kind of challenge.

I don't know if I'll ever go full completionist, but again, I love how the blue coins and 100 coin hunts make you really engage with a world. Take this. This entire, delightful rope structure (which by the way, is one of the most fun mechanics in gaming) that stretches along the entire upper level, never gets used on the main missions for this levels. In the 100 coin/blue coin hunt, it's indispensable.
As I did, I'll give you a second to deal with the sheer irritation of missing one coin in each row. Lol.
If you feel like it, exploring these worlds can be so much fun. I probably wouldn't recommend getting all the blue coins unless you're really into it, but going in-depth with Sunshine really brings out a lot of the flavor of the game.

Even more so because I'm replaying SM64 and I'm having the best time I've ever had with this game! After my one and only 120-star run, so many years ago, I'd never replayed the game this thoroughly, practically skipping whole levels every time. But not this time. This time I'm really, really enjoying it.
What can I say? Everything that feels wrong with Sunshine, I find it executed almost to perfection in 64. The camera, while not being as free as in Sunshine, feels so much better in framing exactly what you need 90% of the time. The perception of depth and distance is leagues ahead of Sunshine, where I always have trouble judging distances. I've basically never missed a coin while swimming in 64, whereas that red coin fish in Noki Bay in Sunshine is pure hell. You fall down a cliff or into a pit? No "Too bad!", no death fanfare, no loading screens - a couple seconds, a little hop, and you're back into the level. And the game just feels so much fun. Running and jumping around is a joy.
The only thing I still don't get after all these years is flying with the winged cap. Thank God there's only a couple little stages built around that.
SM64 is incredible. It's a game designed around the experience of getting to grips with 3D gaming, and it's so perfect. One of the few games I enjoy more and more as time goes by.

5 Stars in Galaxy. Hmmm, I'm kind of not as sweet on it as I expected. Losing some of the moves I was really enjoying using in Sunshine like the dive and its style of spin jump hurts, and how often the camera won't let you take control kind of bugs me. Plus the star bits laser pointer aspect of it is intrusive to me who wants to run around and jump and stuff. I forgot about how every wii game had to jam remote features in.
Well that's impressions after only an hour of play though. I'll give it time. Doing long jumps around planetoids feels amazing, and the music is beyond everything.

Why isn't it played just like you would with a Pro controller? I haven't tried handheld mode yet but it seems to me the most logical way to do it.

I've ended up hooking up my Wii U to replay Galaxy after having given it a spin on the Switch.
This game is simply brilliant. There's very few games out there that I can't find at least some quibble that draws my enjoyment down. There's so much creativity constantly bursting out the seams, and the pacing of these revelations are perfectly executed. You can just feel the soul and passion in poured into this game.
Nintendo's home to many greats, but I don't think they will ever top the Galaxies for me in terms of epitomizing what they excel at: joy and fun.

I think you use a button to spin, then use gyro to move the pointer. I don't think the other stick is used for anything? I could be wrong though.

Ahh, gyro makes sense. But no, you can't do that in the handheld mode. The reason I asked about the right stick was because apparently in the Nvidia Shield version of Galaxy it was used to collect the star bits. But no luck here.

I've had a bit of a muck about with Sunshine, picked up a couple of stars and yeah the ropes are cool - I didn't spot them so I accidentally jumped on one and didn't quite realise how I'd done it but then I jumped onto another rope above and was jumping around the course with reckless abandon - it's a really fun mechanic.

The pachinko level is undoubtedly the jankest crap that has ever been in a Mario game. It is not fun, I don't feel like i'm losing lives because i'm bad but because the level is just plain terrible.
I don't know why anyone thought it was a good idea to keep this in the game.

Tick-Tock Clock, though... I managed to get the first star by entering while time is stopped, same with the red coins. But I'm afraid anything that needs to be done while the parts actually move are way beyond me, or my patience. And from what I remember of Rainbow Ride... I might as well stop now.

I'm doing it every now and then on a lark, when I feel like trying to tackle it, but this is one of those where I honestly feel it is best skipped. They want the physics of a Pachinko machine, but they also want you to have your regular Mario moves and physics, and these just clash to where there's no possible positive outcome. It is literally broken.
I find that activating the hover nozzle to break your momentum, letting go, then letting Mario fall into one of the slots naturally is the probably the best solution I've found so far.

did that Elevator Ride in the Volcano one yesterday, must've taken me half an hour! i kept getting to the very top and falling off those tiny platforms. this game really tests your platforming accuracy.

I beat it, but it was not a good time... I just had to get it out of the way.
Honestly I think I prefer the rocket nozzle. I can consistently get in the center and rocket to some of them, I still ended up getting physic'd quite often but I eventually got it.

Dude, the final Bowser fight in SM64 was MUCH harder in this than I remember it ever being on N64. I think it's maybe the audio delay that messes with the timing of the throws.

That drove me crazy - I couldn't, for the life of me, time the throws because the audio didn't line up with what was happening on screen. But I recall it being that way on the N64, too.

Man, having a hard time enjoying Sunshine - that game has to be the worst Mario game ever released - that damn camera is still shit, especially in tight spots.
64 And galaxy are fantastic, though. Top-Tier Mario games.
Wish they had added Galaxy 2 - really frustrated that it's omitted.
Hoping they give us a Zelda collection next year (maybe giving us HD version of the 3DS versions of OOT and MM and WIIU Windwaker)

Rainbow Ride was my favorite level growing up, I must have been retarded. I don't think it's bad today, but it feels like they mailed it in midway through creating it.

Yeah I had a lot of "deaths by camera" on the moving platforms of Rainbow Ride. Not a highlight for the game but I got all the stars in the end.

I do like the shortcut you can take right at the beginning with a long jump, that's still very badass. Mario 64 is filled with moments like this.

I'm only at 60 stars in SM64, but finished all 7 in Rainbow Road last night. Yeah, that level was as difficult as I remember. I collected coins from a bunch of areas only to end up on the top of the building with 97 coins. NOOOOOO ... had to backtrack and make my way up to the ship, which I just barely did to hit 100 coins. I haven't started Sunshine yet (last played it about 10 years ago) but I believe SM64 will be the more enjoyable experience overall if my memory serves.
What has saved me in SM64 was realizing that I need to let go of the joystick when jumping. If it is centered Mario stops dead regardless of momentum. That tip was critical to avoid accidentally sliding off edges.

I loved it too. I think, back then, it was less about design criticisms and more about an awesome, magical carpet ride through an abstract, crazy sky, set to amazing music.
That level is a pretty high high for a game that already has a ton of creativity and imagination, and a fantastic way to end the regular levels.

Yeah, you're right. I think the overall idea of riding shit in the sky and the sheer spectacle of it (at least by janky 1996 standards) win out over the flaws in that level. And there are flaws, like you do a lot of sitting around doing nothing, the camera sucks ASS in that level and it's VERY linear in a game all about open exploration. It holds a special place in my heart, while at the same time I understand why someone wouldn't like it.
It's the Sunshine of Mario 64 levels.

I think my favourite 64 level growing up was Jolly Roger Bay. The enchanting music, and the mystique of exploring the depths for treasure combined with the excitement of suddenly having this huge eel fill up your whole screen...It sticks with you.

Man, Mario Sunshine is torture. I dont know what it is but it just feels wierd. Mario can hang, climb, hover...like they added too much shit and the level design is so awkward, not at all visually pleasing. Mario 64 is older but holds up well. Sunshine just feel weird...everything about it is wrong.

Sunshine is still good imo but not as good as I remember and 64 is actually better than I remembered.

I'm jealous, I'm at around 46 stars right now and it's rough cause I haven't played this game since I was a teen when it first came out so I'm running into so many stars that are taking way to long to figure out. Important part though is I'm enjoying it booting up every couple days and earning 4-7 stars and moving on. Keeps me from getting burnt out on it.

20 stars in Galaxy now. I...think I hate star bits you guys. Both collecting and shooting.
I remember loving this game when it came out, but then thinking that Galaxy 2 was way better...Now I'm not sure where I will end up opinion-wise but I intend to play through the whole thing.
Right now I don't think it's a good follow up to 64 and sunshine with their awesome playgrounds to explore and traverse. These smaller planets I remembered as bite sized platforming challenges, but I don't even really feel like I'm using my platforming skills in Galaxy, more like I'm on a ride and just strapping in. Even though I can press a button to spin attack instead of shake I feel like there is a weird awkwardness to how the spin comes out that is just so wii remotey...The shadow of waggle still looms large.
My favourite thing about playing the collection so far has been standing high above gorgeous locations like Bianco Hills and Noki Bay and seeing all the lush scenery spread below me in crispy HD for the first time. Red coins, rotating windmills, patrolling enemies and the sparkling water reflecting them all back at you like a wet mirror... everything is so sharp and shiny that it fills me with joy.

That's awesome, though. I appreciate my memory, but sometimes it sucks for me, knowing the exact way a mission is going to play out, where to go, what to do, etc.
These were made to soak up the world a bit, explore, and figure things out.

As someone who was on Gaf (as a reader) for the original Super Mario Galaxy OT, this whole thread feels like a remaster of the original discussions about these three games, and it's really, really awesome.
Had this not been released, I don't think we would have ever had the chance to mass-replay and talk about the games like this, as if they were brand new, and it's been a really special opportunity to do so.

But all anyone will tell you is to "git gud".
The controls are the definition of janky. Moving Mario forward, almost 1 out of 10 times Mario will perform a huge backflip. There is a section in the first level (secret in the cave) where you can slam on a nail to get a 1-up. It usually takes me 20 times to line up. He either does that jump, misses the nail completely, walks 3 extra steps or decides to walk over the edge to his death.
This never happens to me in the other games yet it is somehow my deficiency.
I will admit if you go with the flow, it seems to work better but if you are trying anything detailed, forget it.
