Replacement PS5 has coil whine worse than the first

This is why I haven't gotten either console yet, is it safe to get one now if the coil whine issue's fixed?

What's the latest manufactured date you guys have?

Its definitely not fixed it's a complete lottery. If you buy now make sure it's with a retail you can take it back to for any reason.

When the second wave is officially here then the situation might change but with how limited computer parts are at the moment that could be a while off.

When is this second wave supposed to happen? Any guesses?

Well all the exchanged units are new, there are no refurbs yet. But I can totally understand not wanting to go through all that. Demon Souls is also quiet as expected 😁

@cash_longfellow DarkMage619 DarkMage619 any updates? 😁
Hi, glad you got your ps5 sorted in the end, but in the uk sony arnt sending new units out they are sending refurbs out, as i got my ps5 in uk on release day, the fan was quiet but it had coil whine on the home screen and rest mode and got loud when playing games where i could hear it the other end of the room with tv sound on, i was told by sony rep that when i sent mine for repair it would be a new unit sent out to me, yet just before xmas i got one back and when taking outer cover off the fan screws and some of screws that hold it together all looked scratched, but this unit still had mild coil whine all time and in rest mode and home screen a fan with a bad bearing in making a high pitched noise, when phoning sony support i was told the reason screws where scratched was because it was a reconditioned unit that had been sent, i lived with it till this week where fan suddenly started making a racket so at min sent it back yesturday and now waiting to see what i get back in two weeks

my first ps5 with coil whine that you can defiantly hear difference between game running and not, although on video it doesnt sound as bad as it did in person

Omg that's shocking. Are they even allowed to lie like that? I've dealt with alot of CS's over my 3 replacements and all have said they are replaced by new stock only (from the day one allocation). Maybe there is a small minority of refurbs been sent out? My units all looked new even on the inside. Only curious thing about my new unit is it doesn't have a manufacturing date in the traditional place (never checked the 3 others before it).

If any where sent back for coil whine are refurbed you'd expect the PS5's completely silent. Curious 😊.

Even in the video that would drive me crazy. Horrible. Hope you have better look. Took me three attempts but you get there. Its telling they are swapping for this, its admitting fault in a round about way essentially.

Yeah , im hoping for a quiet unit next , ive been a gamer since the days of a spectrum computer , and from a sega master system and nes i have owned every console and handheld since apart from xbox one which i just stopped with the playstation brand as thats where all game i liked were, the worst thing for me is every playstation console till these ps5 ive had have been silent, my day one ps4 and ps4 pro you would have to put yr ear to the console to no it was switched on, and when the fan does ramp up in games there is no note to the tone of the fan so it just air moving which isnt annoying, yeah when i unpacked my replacement unit it didnt look clean and u could see micro-scratches on the shiny black centre of console, i was starting to think sony just getting consoles in then sending them out to other people then repair or replace

That's pretty terrible, definitely should ask for an exchange.
That was my first ps5 that i got on release day, it was sent back for a unit that had a worse fan whine when on menu and rest mode but the coil whine wasnt as bad, but kept it over xmas to see if i could live with it , then this week fan started making this noise so second unit now gone back to sony to fix or replace

This sounds very similar to my first one. I got it replaced before Christmas (UK) & although it's a different console sent out I'm fairly certain that it's just another one that's been sent in for a problem and not a new one (marks under the shell& the metal fan casing is a bit pushed in) and it is still noisy as hell in Demons Souls etc. From this thread it looks very obvious that they're not even attempting to reduce the noice in any way so it'll be a luck of the draw replacement or a DIY to sort it out.

I inspected my units quite thoroughly can honestly say they looked brand new. Yeah it's a super annoying issue, don't let fanboys tell you any different. Hopefully your next replacement is new. You didn't pay £450 for a refurb.

Yeah i could tell right away it wasnt a new unit when i opened the box the replacment came in, but for me a bit of a joke that sony made the unit so big to keep it cool and quiet, yet both ps5s i have received where louder then my ps4 pro even after gaming for a hr or two. Also last aug i decided to get back in pc gaming and made a i99900k with rtx 2080 super with 5 corsair fans in and even though u can hear the air moving, my pc has no annoying whine or note to anything so i can have it on desk next to my monitor and it doesnt bother me in the slightest . Plus im starting to think the design of the ps5 doesnt help as the case bows out at the top which like the end of a trumpet etc could be increasing the sound

Exactly i told the sony rep last time this and i didnt pay £450 for a console that it annoying me with the sound that i prefer to play on my ps4 pro then the ps5, plus most of my gaming done at night so cant have the volume turned right up as other people in the house sleeping. Although phoning sony for 40min on hold for it to hang up then on phone for 50 min hold a second time to get through was annoying so either sony got a lot of problems still with hardware two months after release or they puttng on hold hoping people will just leave it

Hi, glad you got your ps5 sorted in the end, but in the uk sony arnt sending new units out they are sending refurbs out,

Said this a while ago. There aren't enough new units to send out for people who RMA at the moment and you're likely getting sent a unit that someone else returned for whatever reason.

If someone sent back a unit because of coil whine that will end up in someone else's hands if they have returned a PS5.

These companies are very good at repackaging things in a way that they appear new.

thats sounds horrible, I would hate to game while hearing that noise

Actually reckon their just swapping the PS5s out and sending them back out to customers. I don't think there's anything they can actually do about the coil whine at the moment.

Its a fucked up situation, unfortunate for those involved,

Where I got a brilliant one though bud why would someone send it back to the manufacturer? 😊

No way to know for certain though. I'm still curious where my manufacturing date is 😂

I could live with a slight bit of low noise coil whine, but any high pitched noise or oscillating noise goes through my ears, i even said to sony customer service that it the fan that broke on second unit and just send me a replacement fan and ill send then this fan out, but they wouldnt do it and wanted full console, the reason u can see it refurb on mine as well was astro wasnt pre installed i had to go library or store to redownload. Im hoping by now sony done some better repairs on ones they sending out now but to be honest not holding out much hope 😖

Ah see Astro was installed on all mine. Seems you've been unlucky twice once with the noise and twice them sending a refurb. Wonder if it was just a mix up on their end.

Well quess ill see in just over ten days time when they send whatever back, but seems to me there seems to be a lottery onto which fan or how noisy that is and to if u have coil whine and how much, seems like sony cheaped out a little to get the console out at the price it did, although got a mate with a digital ps5 and thats silent all the time and youd have to be within a foot to no its switched on, same as his xbox x u have to put yr ear next to it to no its running, i wish id recorded conversation with sony support when sent ps5 back in beginning of dec as he even admitted they where getting inundated with calls and there was a problem with a lot of the ps5 out there, since then it though they been told to clamp down on what they saying as no one since has admited it a problem and says it isolated few that got odd problems, although last conversation other day with lasts words of "well i hope yr next ps5 you get sent is ok" from sony support didnt fill me with confidence

That's exactly what my replacement number 3 rep said "Hope this is the lucky one for you've if not return 4 is guaranteed". I mentioned it else where but he said they has all been shown coil whine in person and admitted it's a terrible noise he wouldn't want.

Always take it with a grain of salt as sometimes they just tell you what you want to hear though 😂.

It's a bummer to see so many dealing with this issue. After watching a video of a guy replacing components in the PSU and it STILL making noise makes me wonder if Sony will ever truly address this.

It's an alt. Don't bother

Welp, glad someone else said it. I was going to mention this before but I was treated as if I was antagonizing people for saying I'm surprised Sony is sending out four and five replacement systems for a non defect. But hey, you opened the door. You're right though, there isn't enough systems to go around as it is, the thought that this dude has had four systems (with a fifth on standby?) sent to him while they can't keep up with stock suggests there is more at play here. I find it hard to believe they have a warehouse full of new ps5's waiting around for people who don't like the sound of coil whine.

*shrug* if anywhere is going to have them its Sony direct "repair" centre. The CS's are insistent they are new units, day 1 stock (in the UK).

They don't. There might be some but it's refurbs being sent out too.

Guys the best/funniest thing just happened.

So this 4th unit as you know is the best yet. Only really a bit of noise in the most demanding games different than the other units/videos in there wasnt so much of a buzzing just a bit of noise. So I went over to check and the white flap (tm) was a little loose so pressed it down and the noise has stopped. 😱😱🤯🤯

So while I wont say it's as silent as the Series X it's only a hair bir louder. Basically on mute if you *really* listen you can tell it's on and that's all. So I have what Ill essentially call a silent PS5 at last!

Bullshit. All PS5s have coil whine. It means yours does as well. Your obviously lying about not hearing it. Now pick up the phone and ask for another unit with coil whine.

Also don't forget to order me one.

:messenger_winking_tongue:

Anyways I'm glad you got a decent one. Hopefully it doesn't develop coil whine later on like DarkMage619 DarkMage619 PS5.

So u cant tell if it was coil whine or the fan nosie or case vibration, thought u said it was whining on the most demanding games,

I never had chance to test it extensively, that was indeed the case for unit 3 (1 and 2 were worse). Only noticed it in Spiderman (unit 4 just received) but this time only a little across all game modes equally and it wasn't really what I'd call a "bzzzzz" (from the other units) if that makes sense. Well I was playing Mortal Kombat PS5 and could hear a small noise where there wasnt previously so I investigated. As soon as I did that and it worked I went into the previous torture test app Spiderman and it was gone too!

The hard thing to accept is how Sony tested PS5 before release. How come they did not notice this common problem? And, if they did notice it, why did they think customers wouldn't be angry to play with this noise?
After PS4 with its jet fan, Sony should have really built a very silent console, like MS has been doing for almost 10 years.
I remember when Xbox One was shown for the first time (2013), everyone was laughing at it because of its dimensions. But the console was very quite indeed.
Ps5 is a giant console as well, but it fails to be silent.

Sounds like the PSU for my old Amiga 500. I know how to get it silent but it's not something I would do to a PS5. External PSU have some benefits.

For those curious it's a model B fan (the last one was model C the tear down fan).

Here's a photo to show theres no manufacturing date?

zjIrzkp.jpg

Hostile_18 Hostile_18 so your ps5 has no coil whine even when playing games at performance mode?

So theres three things to consider when you get a PS5 noise wise. A) Coil Whine from the PSU. B) Fan Noise from the fan (theres 3 different types) and C) Vibration.

My first 3 units had coil whine, quiet fans. My 4th unit has no coil whine (under any modes) but a slightly noisier fan.

I'd much rather fan noise than coil whine. It doesn't change to what's on screen and blends into the background a little more. I think my thing with the faceplates is the tighter their on the more it conceals the fan noise, but that's only a guess it could be a little mild vibration.

I guess it depends on the PS5. There are people out there who don't have coil whine. Now their consoles might not be as silent as the XSX but it's nowhere as loud as the PS4 Pro. It's a pretty big achievement for Sony to reduce the noise by that much.

I dont get it, are some of you baiting or somehting?. I can barely hear anything in that vid, even on full blast lol.
God i'd hate to see what some of you would say if you heard my overclock on my gpu :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I won't make any definitive statements but I think its marginally louder (but still quiet) than the other two types. Still no coil wine buzzing which is a lot worse than fan noise for me.
Glad to hear you can hear your replacement system less.

Even though my console is still quiet in practical use - effectively silent in UHD Blu-ray use for home cinema - as I got closer to finishing all the stuff in Spider-man remastered for platinium the sound from the fan got a bit louder, - noticed when using performance mode for some of the harder challenges - and stayed that loud in all PS5 games - Astro, CoD, Morales/Remastered.

As a first test I repositioned my PS5 - put it on the bottom shelf on solid wood, rather its previous glass shelf at the top, and got some rug gripper tape(2-sided) to secure the PS5 base in side mount position, and removed the 2nd glass shelf above to quadruple the air around the unit. but that had no effect. The noise still wasn't half as loud as a original PS2 - seem to remember tiny fan spinning at high speed - so easily liveable, but was still intrigued by what had changed.

Eventually I powered down, popped the lid off and got a security screw driver to check for a label. but no loose label, but did see a tiny quick code sticker in secured IIRC. From what I can see, the fan is a good quality item, but the hole it spins in is a few mm too small (across the diameter) for the accuracy of the fan shaft when spinning at higher speeds - because the fan doesn't have a shaft like a pole, but is secured more like a ceiling fan - at just the top.

After I carefully re-seated the fan and re-secured the screws the operating sound seemed to have dropped back to its day 1 level - probably because the fan re-seat has it sitting slightly more central again, and I'm certainly considering o-rings if the noise level changes again.

When I get finished with my current set of unfinished games, I'll take my own earlier advice and format my system and reinstall the firmware from USB download just for curiosity sake.

I'm having fan issues now 😱. Fan started booting off and making an annoying whirrring noise in all games and no amount of pressure will sort it.

Tried to play Twin Mirror last night and in between people talking I could hear it. Played Mortal Kombat and going to the finisher menu I could hear it. It actually felt good to turn the console off and return to a quiet room.

I'm done now, tried 4 different consoles only to get a 4th with a different problem. Going to sell it for a small profit (to cover the day 1 software I bought) and jump back in at a later date when the manufacturing process has improved. I looked on Amazon and theres reviews saying "I cant even tell it's on".

Sony have lost a customer with a huge attach rate for a while now because of this incompetence.

Ps not going to engage in fan boys questioning me, had enough of it, and pissed off enough. Slap your headphones on and enjoy.

Slap your headphones on and enjoy.

That's not the case with everyone here. Some people really do have quiet consoles. I'm really sorry it didn't work out for you. Sounds like they probably were just sending you systems that other people have turned in which isn't correct in my opinion.

When I do get mine I'll let you know if it gives me any issues.

Thank you I'd love to hear your experience. It could well be the case, and if true annoyed they lied to me. I'm going to set the cost of the console aside and jump back in when I'm fairly confident I'll get a quiet one. I use my console every day and I'm a big cinematic story type gamer so its not really worth me putting up with it at the moment.

I'm very confident of stealth revisions down the road and at least I got to play Demon Souls all the way through. Hopefully sorted for Rachet and Clank/Horizon 2.
