Replacement PS5 has coil whine worse than the first

I'm having fan issues now 😱. Fan started booting off and making an annoying whirrring noise in all games and no amount of pressure will sort it.

Tried to play Twin Mirror last night and in between people talking I could hear it. Played Mortal Kombat and going to the finisher menu I could hear it. It actually felt good to turn the console off and return to a quiet room.

I'm done now, tried 4 different consoles only to get a 4th with a different problem. Going to sell it for a small profit (to cover the day 1 software I bought) and jump back in at a later date when the manufacturing process has improved. I looked on Amazon and theres reviews saying "I cant even tell it's on".

Sony have lost a customer with a huge attach rate for a while now because of this incompetence.

Ps not going to engage in fan boys questioning me, had enough of it, and pissed off enough. Slap your headphones on and enjoy.
Sorry to hear this, i honestly dont think my next one coming will be any better then the last, the first console i had had a quiet fan to begin with and each day the fan started to get louder with a annoying noise from it as well as the coil whine, at the time i seen cex where offering over £600 cash for the ps5 and was tempted, although im with you if my next one comes back bad ill be selling and just carry on using my ps4 pro

Fuck cex

Thank you I'd love to hear your experience. It could well be the case, and if true annoyed they lied to me. I'm going to set the cost of the console aside and jump back in when I'm fairly confident I'll get a quiet one. I use my console every day and I'm a big cinematic story type gamer so its not really worth me putting up with it at the moment.

I'm very confident of stealth revisions down the road and at least I got to play Demon Souls all the way through. Hopefully sorted for Rachet and Clank/Horizon 2.

Mine will be a much later production unit so hopefully it's fixed by then. I'll make sure to do all sorts of tests and let you know what I hear. I usually game with headphones so minor noise won't be an issue for me. But I'll let you know what it sounds with them off.

I don't think any revision will fix it if the PS4 is the measurement tool. It will always be a lottery. I think the issue is that Sony use the cheapest parts that money can buy, plastic included.

My PS3 super slim is quiet, but that's it. So is the OG PS4 500gb I currently have, but my previous 2 and Pro were jet engines.

I really don't get the need to cheap out to save pence per unit when the Vita had quality build materials, their radio/TV range etc all use premium materials but then they dish up a wonky and loud PS4 and now the PS5 with that cheap shiny plastic. Love the games, the hardware build quality is shit though.

I tried a ps3 super slim when it came out and took it back to game becasue of fan making a annoying whiring sounds, tried three from there and all where same, eventually staff gave me my money back and got my ps3 slim i traded in back which wasnt as bad as the slim, my playstation one where silent, my ps2 fat and ps2 slim were silent and my fat ps3 , day one ps4 and ps4 pro are silent , ps3 slim was slightly noisy but not to bad, ive read in a lot of places people with noisy ps4 and pro yet mine silent, but like u said if sony never fixed it with the ps4 and pro they arnt gonna fix it with the ps5, i think they are made to a certain price and cause if that some things are cheaped out on

I think it's a combination of things. Both poor build quality, or at least missing consistency and people like us been far more susceptible to noises at the lower end of the spectrum. Case in point Stuart360 Stuart360 finding that PS5 video fine, where's I found it horrific (neither right or wrong technically).

I notice a trend of having a noisy PSU/quiet fan or a quiet PSU/noisy fan but very rarely both quiet variants together. It stopped me been able to enjoy PS5 games but I can totally understand another person not even noticing it. Given this was the best in 4 units I had no worries about selling it as it looks to be above the average, at least in the UK.

I've also requested a Cyberpunk refund and if it goes through my account will be credited £60 for my eventually return. Along with Valhalla, Twin Mirror and Spiderman: MM waiting for me. Going to out my 2tb NVME into my Series X for now so that gives me 3tb to play with.

Got £150 profit (well £100 really as sold an extra controller of bought) to spend on Series X software, probably Cyberpunk. Honestly gaming without background noise is bliss. Hopefully the second wave PS5s will be better for people like us.

Yeah im hoping my next ps5 quiet will just have to see in a week or twos time when it comes back, for me i can live with fan noise, its when its oscillating at a high pitch it goes through my ears, i can game on my ps4 pro all day and when fan does kick in its just like air moving no note or changing note to it, same as my pc i built last aug its got 5 corsair fans in and its only a foot or two away from me and can be on it hours and it dont bug me

Yeah I get that 😊 Its strange with the fan noise as I never minded it on my Pro with this last one it was like a really weird noise, not what a traditional fan going round would sound like (hard to describe though). Given it was near enough silent a few days ago maybe it had become dislodged/uneven. I considered getting a special screw driver and the o ring trick, they I thought fuck it this is my 4th PS5 and I shouldn't have to do this.

That's not the case with everyone here. Some people really do have quiet consoles. I'm really sorry it didn't work out for you. Sounds like they probably were just sending you systems that other people have turned in which isn't correct in my opinion.

When I do get mine I'll let you know if it gives me any issues.

Hostile_18 Hostile_18 Damn I'm really sorry to hear PS5 number 4 is a no-go, but I completely agree with the above post. I absolutely believe the majority of PS5s are quiet and perform with little to NO problems.

I think with the current shortage of available consoles they are forced to recycle returns of PS5s with less than catastrophic failures. There is no way that anyone could go through all the problems you and some others have experienced if they were truly new PS5s. At this point I think your plan to wait until more stock is readily available makes sense, plus there will be more exclusive games for you enjoy by then.

Might even be able to bag myself a nice limited edition console! 😁 Yeah it could well be recycled PS5's, it's just insult to injury that CSR's would lie to their customers about that.

But what's 6 months in the scheme of things for a console I'll use most days for seven years 😊 I got to play Demon Souls till completion and theres nothing I want to play exclusive wise till Ratchet so I think I'm in a good place. Bit of a pain not having access to my library but worse things in life. Going to give Cyberpunk a good seeing to (and check out this 30fps all bells and whistle mode!).

This why I gave up when I got my replacement. As soon as I heard the buzzing when I turned on the new console I knew pretty much every system has some degree of coil whine and noisy fans. Sony wasn't interested in making a quiet console just one that was quieter than the PS4 Pro. It is sad when some zealous Sony fans make excuses for this but of course call out MS for any mistake real or imagined. I guess we should both just wait 6 months + to see how the later made console sound and see if Sony ever addresses this. I wish you had more time just enjoying your system then having to deal with so many RMAs.

I don't think coil whine is part of the design. There's obviously a component that isn't functioning properly. Might as well try again and see if you can get a unit that's not defective. I know they do exist but it depends if you want to play that lottery.

My PS5 feels like it gets a louder whine day by day. Might just be my imagination. I don't feel like dealing with a return, but If it wouldn't take so long I would.

I know that there are a lot of people saying this, but I really don't think it's true. I think there's a bandwagon people are jumping on saying that these things are all silent because that's what they hear other people say. And we know that it's true for some of them, yours would have been if you got one of the other fans. I'm sure people here lucked out with quiet consoles. But seeing as there are 3 different fans being used, we could guess that 1/3 of the consoles out there make the same fan noise your new one started making. Of the remaining 2/3, we don't know how many have coil whine, but probably a lot. My second one had your fan noise in addition to coil whine, it's just harder to hear the coil whine over the noise from the fan. I would guess that more than half of the consoles people have are not as quiet as they're being made out to be. People just can't hear it or don't pay attention to it and say that it's silent.

It's also very early in the generation, a lot of people are probably still playing PS4 games or Spider-Man, which has a lot of background noise. The new RE8 demo makes mine sound really bad and is a quiet game, meaning I can clearly hear it the whole time. I imagine that as more demanding games continue to come out, more people are going to notice this problem. 3/4 of the consoles you got have coil whine. 2/2 I got have coil whine. Plenty of people who tried to replace theirs have coil whine. Even Mystic's PS5 has coil whine, though it's seemingly not as loud as some other PS5. People can debate whether or not coil whine is an issue, but this seems to be very widespread.

What's the chances of a revision in the near future? I plan on grabbing one soon but I can't deal with that shit. Seems like a really wide spread issue.

I cant see there being any revison till a slim model otherwise sony would be admiting to a problem and loads more would be phoning in to swap consoles etc, i think sony just hope like the ps4 pro that was noisy for some people will just live with it

Open it and try the o rings, there is a vid on YouTube, warrenty will be still intact, as no stickers removed, man i hate to see u play on pc lol, think ur being a bit silly wanting a silent gaming, even my slim ps4 started off slinet, now its louad as fuck. Sony consoles have never being silent lol

I was tempted but then just don't like the thought of modifying my PS5. I'm not sure I want it silent (my pro certainly wasnt and never had issues with previous consoles) its just not an annoying sound from seven feet away (bzzzz from coil whine or strange pitched fan noise).

Mine that had the pitched fan i tried the oring method and it didnt do anything , when i lifted the fan out it was silent, but u could feel vibration in the fan and as soon as it touched the plastic it started with the noise but to me putting orings under still didnt take the sound away

Just wanted to show you all that silent PS5s do exist. Heres mine (with its Stormtrooper guard lol) after playing it the last 4 hrs, Sackboy and Demons Souls. Im in the US and i got mine in mid Dec.

Dont mind the faint water sound lol its my cats water fountain haha

Given the video from the repair guy who "fixed" the coil whine by upgrading two capacitors and adding some silicone to insulate the vibrations, I would guess that a pretty simple revision in the factory could achieve the same results (assuming that's the source of the whine).

Mine is mostly inaudible but if it ever gets loud I'll probably do the same capacitor swap. I do cap replacement on gameboys and have done it on my N64, so I can't imagine it being too hard looking at that video.

Here's a quick video of mine. My phone is probably about a foot away.

Compared to the other videos here that must have recorded coffeemakers and UFO's this one seems like it is similar to mine.

Was it recored in-game or in the Ps5 Menu?
If you sit further away with gamesound on, do you still hear it?

I doubt they are ever going to be better unless a slim type version comes out.

Sonys hardware has been rather trash other than the PS3 generation.

This was in-game, I think I opened Fortnite to get this. In that game I can hear it with the sound on from a distance because it's so quiet a lot of the time, same with Demon's Souls and the RE8 demo. In something like Spider-Man or Astro's with a lot of background music, I can't really discern it unless there's a quiet moment or it's muted.

The menu is almost silent, I can barely hear it. There is some slight coil whine when I go to the menu from a game without closing it, but I really have to listen for it.

Thank you! That genuinely the first silent video I've seen on Gaf. So they do exist, your so lucky. 😁

Since when are these consoles supposed to be near silent? I dont understand, my PSpro is taking off sometimes and i cant be bothered cuz i use headphones. i have the feeling my refrigerator makes a lot more noise than these PS5 clips i see.

I feel some people are overly sensitive and just cant deal with life...

Mine is same on idle (dash/menu..etc) different story when you start playing AC, Spidey, DS or any other game..gets louder in Performance mode.

That's awesome!! that your console stays silent at any given moment, you scored a rare gem 🤜🤛 Congrats.

I keep repeating myself but S|X Internal design in a different league completely. I call it a "stealth mode" on any game. Period. Basically it feels like console is shut down, literally..and I thought Xbox one X was silent.

It's the type of noise the PS5 makes. Its not like other consoles its more pitched, variable and annoying. You can't filter it into the background as white noise like you can the Pro. Plus sometimes it's even in rest mode so you hear it all the time. Long play sessions with my first two units would leave me with a ringing in my ears, that's definitely not good.

Are you always using the external USB SSD in those situations - you've mentioned in this and other threads ?
The faint noise I get from mine - a touch more than that video - is constant. If your noise is changing so that it can't be filtered as white noise, then I suspect it is an issue with your external SSD - if that has been introduced to all 4 consoles in anyway.

Even if the SSD cost hundreds of pounds - which it sounds like it did - it isn't beyond being defective like a USB stick, or just having an unforeseen compatibility issue with the caddy, etc

All my PS5's were tested with and without the external USB. That is completely silent 😊. Variable noise is cool whine from the PSU based on load/task.

I think you are missing the point I am making.

In another thread you said the usb drive forces the consoles into storage repair mode. So although the device is whitelisted, it is still a foreign piece of hardware that has exhibited issues and still being reintroduced to each system - which really raises questions of fairness about the shade getting thrown IMHO about alledged whine from the PSU.

Just because something appears to still function doesn't mean it is operating as intended or optimally, HDDs being a case in point that a failing HDD will appear to work on windows, yet linux will report every error - ps5 os is likely linux based. So a salient issue with your foreign external storage, on balance of probabilities is probably corruptimg the ps5s primary storage in some trivial way or causing hap hazzard performance - maybe as a result of a flakey usb cable, caddy controller - resulting in the ps5s exhibiting the noises you are hearing - beyond a constant fan whirring which seems to have a bit of a range across all units, from quiet to the upper edge of liveable.

Yeah, basically anyone whom claims "I cant hear mine even ear next to it" are either liars or deaf. (Or live in middle of motorway)

Console/device with Fan/moving parts always emits noise, and in normal quiet room with 20-35dB of background noise = device is audible for 2-10m or more, easily.

People whom claim "mine is silent" are just assholes whom want to make others feel bad, or deaf.

Even switch is audible from the dock for multiple metres, and it is not noisy.

I have now heard 5x PS5, all have piercing coil whine that can be heard as far as these rooms had room to walk+ fan is audible for multiple meters. Fan is not loud, but not difficult to hear either. Much better than ps4. But coil whine have annoying characteristics that make it sound even more annoying even if decibels arent high.

You cant record "silentness" or noise levels into video like that

If deaf person records a rocket with broken mic, is it silent? Because he didnt hear anything and video is silent?

Videos wont tell much about noise levels, using non-calibrated recording device makes it pointless + watching it makes it worthless too.

Lets say you record noise at "level 60"
Someone watches it with volume that makes it sound like "level 10", is the device on the video now silent?

How about if another user uses volume "level 400", is it now super loud?

There are no silent consoles, unless they are not on

Sounds just like mine. When I sit on my sofa, about 3 meters away, the sound is only hearable when its silent or mute.
Since i cant hear it over normal - loud gameplay i can ignore it. For me "PS5 with slight coil whine" > "no PS5"

I made a few videos too this morning to see if i can record the noise, however i think depeding on the volume of videos the sound comes over way too overblown compared to the reality.

Sounds like mine when in Ps5 main menu.
Was the game still running actively when you took the video?

I dont get this "after playing 4 hours" i hear so often. Coil whine isnt like fan noise that gets worse when playing longer.
It gets worse with the power draw at the moment of playing and drops off immediately when the game is quit/suspended.

Maybe no silent PS5's but I can assure you my Series X is unless we get silly I.e putting ear to it etc. Well regardless the video gives me hope as hearing Bo's "silent" PS5 have coil whine via YouTube was clear enough. 😊

From my own testing it's hard not to believe a *relatively* silent PSU and fan combination don't exist as I've got first hand experience of both.. just not together 😊.

So theres three things to consider when you get a PS5 noise wise. A) Coil Whine from the PSU. B) Fan Noise from the fan (theres 3 different types) and C) Vibration.

My first 3 units had coil whine, quiet fans. My 4th unit has no coil whine (under any modes) but a slightly noisier fan.

I'd much rather fan noise than coil whine. It doesn't change to what's on screen and blends into the background a little more. I think my thing with the faceplates is the tighter their on the more it conceals the fan noise, but that's only a guess it could be a little mild vibration.
All ps5 have coil whine . You just don't hear it because the fan covering it. You probably have a Nidec fan too most likely.

Try to disconnect the fan and turn on Astro bot for 2 mins . You will hear the coil whine .

Are you people so naive? My OG PS4 was dead silent too in the beginning and it got progressively louder as years went by. Same will happen with PS5, you can bet on it. Funniest are those that celebrate when they get their silent replacement, "yaaay, this one is the one!"...and I'm like bruh.

I have a PS5 digital, and thought mine was silent...until I played the RE Village Demo. As already posted, because the demo is pretty much silent, and I was playing late at night where the environment was quiet, I sadly noticed the coil whine. Confirmed by starting and quitting astrobot a few times with sound muted...soon as that GPU shifts into PS5 clocks, there it is. Definitely not fan noise.

On PS4 games, it's hardly even there. My PS5 is probably 10ft away and tbh unless the game is silent and it's pushing the GPU hard I doubt it'd ever bother me. Wouldn't bother returning my machine just to get another one that would probably be the same or even worse. As in, touch wood, my fan is fine.

At same time, it's one of those things that you can't forget once you know it's there!

Can confirm. i didn't hear any coil whine when i first got my PS5.
It started a few days later.

It wasnt, i was at the PS5 menu, but i had literally just quit playing a minute before. I did yesterday and other days take my headset off at random times during long Demons Souls playthroughs and it sounded exactly the same.....aka nothing. If i get up and super close and put my ear to it (while the game is on and playing) i can hear a faint fan noise, but no buzzing, variable fan weird noises, etc....

Im aware coil whine is caused by power draw, etc.....ive just seen so many comments here from people that do have it that say "oh mine is really loud at the main menu", "mine is loud after x hours", "mine is loud only during and after demons souls", etc.....that i posted that one to try to cover all bases.

So I just bought a new PS5 for around the same price I sold my last one. This is obviously a brand new unit outside of the Sony PS5 "replacement" program.

If people are interested I'll post the results when I get it but if its upsetting too many people at this point 'll just keep it to myself lol.

Yeah deffo post results, i think all ps5 have some type of noise, just some people are less sensitive to the noises, i had two people with the first video i posted , said they could live with that and it much quieter then there ps4 pros , yet it annoyed the hell out of me, even with my ps4 pro on full fan is less annoying, ive had a email to say they havnt recieved my ps5 back and was i still sending it , yet on the email with check how return going it sayin ive posted it to them and next step is them getting it, but still got reciept from post office saying ive sent it, so will give it to tue/wed then ring up, but tbh cba siting on phone for a hr again

I've had no end of drama. This ebay seller is now saying he's been hacked. I bought off him because his account was from 2003 with 100% positive ratings. He had 3 to sell. All very suspicious, Ebay wants me to wait till the 4th see if I get it 🙈. Dont know what to think but I'm 100% assured me money is safe omg lol.
