Politics Forum....?

Sad face :/

Mods, if I setup a "neogaf member political site" can I post it here? I enjoyed this groups political discussions. Wacky, but not nuts.

one side of me would have liked to be there and see the ban wave happen, like watching a car crash live

or mybe it's the old forum mod in me talking :messenger_tears_of_joy:
There wasn't much to see really. Someone made a post then they and the people who liked it got banned. There wasn't a long chain of meltdowns or anything like that.

Looks like you're going to need a new job, as that position has been made redundant.

EDIT: oh well never mind

I always saw the politics section as a containment board, to keep political topics from flooding other sections of the forum. Even then it didn't always work. TLoU2 threads often devolved into politics, or Star Wars threads. My feelings on this nuking is that the problem still exists (people will always want to discuss these topics), but the (imperfect) solution is gone. So I wonder how much this is actually going to fix. Mods are going to have to hunt down threads and posts with any level of politcal discourse (which is more common than ever) and smack it down wherever they see it. Is that any better than the previous situation? I dunno, and I'm not the one doing the work. I hope so, for the team.

Another thought, is that it might have been good to discuss this problem with the community as well, which as far as I know didn't happen. Who knows, maybe someone could have given valuable input. Of course, ultimately it's up to the team to make their decision, but I think members would have felt better if they were involved more in decisions like this. I mean, we're talking big changes in the community. Members make that community. We have an interest in keeping things good too. Have a bit more faith in us, perhaps?

I thought everyone was playing nice but I was only active in a few threads..... Not ecstatic it went away but at least it all went away so there were no sides taken... I'm good with that..

Imagine cheering on censorship lol... Odd to see all these users I have never seen come and shit on politics... Where were you all when the board was up? Why weren't you defending your moral virtues against bigoted racists?

a lot of people watched politics but didn't want to participate in it because of obvious reasons. Trained was a good example of people who can't let it go and who weren't really here for the games anyway.

What is the reason for the nuke?

I'm confused, since that forum was a lot more civilized than what's going on at other places. :S
As someone who spent there entire time in the politics section I can only say "wtf" to this lol

Where have you been that you would consider that civilized?

I was thinking it would have been good to lock the politics sections back in January when the new rules were posted. Would be nice to get it back one day, but I also totally understand why it was removed. I really wish politics would be removed from most things. Back to talking about games that I have no time to play.

I'm more and more convinced of the position Robert Talisse takes in his book Overdoing Democracy that we need spaces that aren't overtly politicized because politics doesnt exhaust meaning. In the latter parts of a recent episode of The Weeds podcast titled "the politics of cultural criticism" the guest (a movie critic at The Washington Post) makes a similar point about how a facile kind of political criticism flattens distinctions and misses what is actually interesting about media. Forums are both a reflection of and cause of this turn in journalism and I think a lot,of people want to get away from it even though they have trouble looking away from the car crash nature of it. It was kind of contained in a sub forum but not really with how partisan coded different forums become as a result of it.
This is stupid. There is no such thing as a place without politics.

Censorship?? This was a bunch of prolific lunatics! Any sensical discussion with them was a fucking embarrassment. Ani-vaxxers, conspiracy fanatics, some on the verge of racism, some downright racist and most of them mean spirited. I'm all for free speech and discussions with everyone, but quite frankly, it doesn't have to be here on NeoGAF. I'm here to have a good time. There are a bunch of other forums on the internet where anyone can get his/her fair share (and more) of this kind of stuff.

The politics forum just tainted this whole site! It probably kept a lot of "normal" people away. I mean, NeoGAF is a goddamned GAMING FORUM. There is so much politcs everywhere now, you just can't escape it - where ever you go on the fucking internet! There is so much drama, so much hysteric far-left AND far-right bullshit, it's become beyond annoying!

The politics forum was the overgrown, ugly weed that kept this GAMING SITE from prospering.

Talking about politics SUCKS anyway if you want to have a good time - everyone knows that!

Good fucking riddance!

Here guys. You can thank me later.

Those sexist threads are next!

jk

It was a source of major friction and drama within the community. It was attracting the wrong type of people to GAF, and pushing away the right type of people. It was a nightmare to moderate. It was frequently an embarrassment to be associated with.

It's gone.
Thank you.

Aww man, I hardly posted in politics (I hardly post anyway) but is was always the first forum I would visit, it interested me a lot.

Are any of the threads salvageable and could be ported over to off topic or communities, such as the BritGAF thread for us Brits to talk about local happenings?

Didn't even noticed it was gone till I came by this.

I'm sure there was some "quality" post/articles floating around in that section, but I never even clicked on that section.

Don't care too much about it either way, but given the amount of adjustments from hard left to hard right to back again this site has been through - not just passively, but through active actions and participation in discussion - I doubt there's any consistent personal conviction of leadership behind any of those shifts. Maybe a concern of losing users or ad revenue, sure, but that's probably about it (which is fair enough, I guess).

Anyways, let's see how it turns out then. My best bet is those topics will tend to creep into the gaming and ot forums instead now, but we'll see. Up until now, the gaming forum did seem to be reasonably well focused on, well, gaming, so I hope that's not going to change things.

The gamefaqs one isn't too bad. It's pretty thoroughly modded too

It's strange to think about. GFAQs has always had a problem with too harsh moderation, but that behavior has lead to it's politics board to be one of the sanest ones there is.

Just want to say I really appreciated the many discussions we had going in the UKPoliGAF thread. Feel like a fish out of water right now tbh.. :/
Maybe you can set up a Brit OT where we can post brit stuff?

EviLore EviLore

I know you're getting spammed with questions, so here's one more:

Brit OT? Can we post stuff that goes down if it's in regards to Westminster? We usually just drink tea and guffaw at the Daft bird running Scotland

I disagree. Evilore is 100% a middle of the road person, maybe leaning a little more left than normal but not radically. I think he just wants a forum where people can openly debate without being to far to one side of the spectrum. Also, I think he cares a lot about the mod team who does a great job. Moderating the politics must have been super hard.

It's fine that it's gone but I hope that there's a blanket "no politics" rule from now on and that all the other sub-forums will be tightly moderated to ensure no one posts anything related to politics or anything that could turn into a political discussion.

You may not have liked moderating that sub-forum but it did a great job of keeping the political discussion contained where only people who wanted to be a part of it could participate. Now I fear that discussion will "leak" to other areas of the forum and everyone will suffer for it.

Also EviLore EviLore , I'm curious. What, in your opinion, is the "wrong" type of person?
