Politics Forum....?

Not open for further replies.
Playing so many hours of Fallout 4 these days, come to gaf and a full part of the forum is nuked. Everything makes sense now.

Before when the wife would berate me, 'why are you on your iPad instead of watching this romcom with me', I would proudly proclaim, "discussing world matters woman!"

Now I'll have to sheepishly whisper "vidya gamez..."

Thanks EviLore, my consumption of braindead reality shows is about to skyrocket

I do find it odd that people who I remember posting in the politics forum are happy to see it gone. Why were you posting there if you wanted it to be gone? I find that curious to say the least.

I'll answer that: I just don't care that much. Yeah, I liked to post over there, but it's really not a big deal that it's gone for me. If Tyler and the rest of the mods have seen a decline in the quality of the threads, and have seen a rise in undesirable members because of it, then the decision to grenade the whole forum was obviously the right thing for them to do. And it's their website, not ours, so no point in bitching and moaning about it. It's all good.

It was a good idea. I don't think he wants the perception of this place to be the opposite of resetera. It was good idea getting rid of the resetera thread too, even though it was entertaining.

Just tell her you're looking at the titties thread.

That's probably still better than saying you're arguing with someone over Dark Souls difficulty settings.

Just kidding, I think the decision is fine for the forum. I just wish there were a little more interesting things in gaming to talk about at the moment.

I would just go straight to the political thread whenever I got on.

I can relate to this too well....

That's fine if you feel that way. I didn't see anything happening on the politics forum that was really impacting any of the other forums. Perhaps I just didn't see it. But from my position, I see it as the wrong decision. I'm unlikely to change my mind about it.
There were people coming here who would sit around and make useless posts in Gaming/OT just to hit the minimum for member so they could then spend all their time trolling in Politics. For some people, it's a job.

Again, that's his prerogative. I was just responding to the idea that whether you agree with it or not, you should support it. That's bootlicker behavior. I'm not going to whine and bitch about it. I just don't agree with the move. I'm not expecting anyone to do anything about it. Why should they? But it's a discussion forum. Opinions are what we do here. So that's my 2 cents.

I think this is a snowflaky reeee-like move tbh. Atleast we can talk about it without being instabanned like you would on reee.

There were always the crazy rights and lefts in that part and a normal guy like myself could just laugh at it and not look at it when I didn't care. First the reeee community thread got removed for no reason (?) and now another part of the forum that would probably make your average resetera user cry is also gone... I'm not for it as these seem measures to be more welcoming to reee crazies which made the 'original' neogaf unbearable.

The big difference being Nobody Important still was able to post versus all opposing views being banned at that other site.
Of course. It doesn't change the fact that a lot of the whiners are hypocrites. Claiming to be open to all opinions isn't what was going on in the politics forum. Problem with Reeee is that politics permeates every single thread. Mention CP2077, Chick Fil A, Harry Potter etc etc and you risk a ban. If Evilore manages to keep politics out of OT and Gaming, this place will be a gem, and will be attractive to people who enjoyed discussing games at RE but weren't far enough left for those idiots.

Back to a more serious tone, I'm just too old or something to have a single focus. My broader interests were catered too very well, a bit here, a bit there. Slow times on one side balanced with something stimulating on the other, etc.

It's going to be quite an adjustment for me personally.

Did you miss the part where there is no politics allowed, anywhere?

AKA no "reeeeing" anywhere; that includes reverse reeeee-ing, which has been rampant in gaming. (consistently making everything about some SJW scourge ruining gaming)

If someone from resetera shows up and starts making threads about representation in gaming they'd get themselves banned too.

Good luck. You think moderating politics was a challenge? Attempting to delineate what is and is not politics will be challenging.

Would you like having a child molester around your kids even when he's not molesting kids at that time?

I don't have a problem with the politics forum being closed. This site is not owned or ran by me But I can't help but feel like it was for more reasons than we are seeing.

EviLore EviLore is usually very articulate and posts long concise explanations as to why things change. But this change feels quite cold with short answers. No warnings or requests from the community to counter bad apples. Just, poof , nope.

What happened? How was a contained sub section "Bringin down" the rest of the forum?

I'm just thinking out loud here, but it feels like there's more to it than that ?

Yeah, that's fair enough. I guess the only real practical answer is that if folks want to discuss politics, then searching for another forum that doesn't lean either one way or the other, and does a good job of rooting out the freaks and extremists is the way to go. Though they're doesn't seem to be many of those about, unfortunately. Maybe for the same reasons that the Gaf mods decided to grenade this politics forum.

I'll take a guess:

After the Chauvin trial there was a thread made in Gaming about Playstation praising the verdict, talking about unity and all that.

The thread featured a rather blatantly racist joke right in the first few posts; the rest of the thread wasn't much better.

It was disappeared rather quickly.

The gaming forum in general devolves into that kind of thing rather often. And this is.. afterall.. primarily a gaming forum. That's not what you want your ad hosts seeing if they take a look, or have your site reported.. or random people who show up from google search results.

I'm guess is that was what triggered the action to just kill off political talk on this forum.

There was also that little riot and all that went with it.

But that's all just a total guess I'm probably wrong lol

People were probably less likely to sign up here to discuss games when they saw the dumpster fire that was politics. That's bad for business.

Looking at the bans page, it appears they had to get rid of a lot of white supremacy assholes recently, and maybe decided it was just better to get rid of the thing that was attracting them to the site completely. You wouldn't leave a honeypot out if you don't want to attract bees.

The politics forum had some threads worth reading here and there, but mostly it was cloud of negativity that was constantly leaking all over the rest of the site. I am accepting of all kinds of different viewpoints and beliefs, but seeing the casual white nationalism being expressed just made me uneasy to come here. That stuff is poison for the mind, go find some other platform to recruit for your cause. Good riddance. I miss the days of the old internet, before the trenchlines and online personas completely based around political beliefs. I just want a decent place to talk about videogames.

Well , I wouldn't want that either. I frequently visited the politics forum, but I didn't see any white supremacy personally.
Is there a way to see what happened?

maybe ask yourself why you're so attached to a politics forum on a gaming website and why its removal upsets you that much. it started cultivating an extremely toxic culture and nothing of value was lost by removing it
Oh I'm not losing my shit about it. I just disagree with the decision, as I've said. The idea I would support or praise something I disagree with is against pretty much everything I believe. I'll choose to tolerate it or I won't. But I'm not going to pretend I like it or agree with it to appease anybody.

Ban request: conspiracy theorizing.

Nah. They nuked it completely. Probably wise. What some people think is okay, others wouldn't, and it would just start the same arguments up again.

I'm in the same boat. I disagree with it as well, but I'm not going to raise a stink over it. Is there anywhere on the net that has a fair , balanced political discussion?

This video i watched this morning really describes politics these days and kind of touches on why the politics section had to be shut down here.

Unrelated question: Why are Saagar and Krystal doing this thing with different cohosts? Are they taking turns going on vacation or something? Also that woman that Krystal was with had like the worst voice for that kinda job.

I think it's harder to put in a longer post "I don't like that the vibe was turning actually racist/alt-right" in there."

I liked the forum too but there did seem to be a change within the last month. It's a bummer, to us normal folks who like going a few rounds on politics, but it's clear the mod team just couldn't get it under control.

Will definitely miss some of the takes, but I'm sure we will find plenty to talk about.

Serious question.

Do you lack the self control to not visit the subforum or do you just feel that since you disagreed with it, no one should have access to it?

these takes are something else lol

I mean it was such an issue the people who run the site had to actually remove it.

Excellent example of the politics forum post though, set up an argument I never made then snipe at my credibility by attacking my character.

Since the entire forum last time I checked about 3 months ago was an endless circle jerk of that nature, unless you enjoyed talking about how minorities should stop putting there hands so quickly as it scares the police into shooting them, you couldent get a word in edgeways.

Enjoy, not that it will satisfy your "See no evil, hear no evil" position.

fallout 4 is a legit good game. i didn't like it at first but the more i play it, the more i enjoy it. it's still not as good as 3 was but it's a lot better than it gets credit for

Disappointing but, being a guest here since 2006 I learned a long time ago that I'm just that, a guest.

And the silly statements "why are you interested in politics on a gaming forum?", because I like having a one stop shop for everything.. gaming news, movie/tv show discussion, politics. It was VERY convenient.
And I did like that that politics was a little more even handed, reddit is a shit show, I deleted my account there a while back even though I only participated for 2-3 years, there simply aren't any good sites left that actually allow both viewpoints. While I didn't agree with everyone in politics I did like people presenting their case.

I can't help but think that the people who are cheering the loss of politics are those that were not capable of forming a good argument, they didn't like that politics didn't tow-the-line of the viewpoint they had but were not savvy enough to actually participate. Pretty shitty opinion to cheer for silencing a section because you don't agree with it's contents, but.. I've also learned that people love to cheer for things they don't like getting silenced.

Anyway, I feel like the change will hurt the traffic significantly but as a guest I'll just play along since there are still a few good gaming threads worth watching.

I'm saying that TLOU3 will probably have heavy political messaging at the core of the game--that's pretty much guaranteed with its developers. So... how are we supposed to discuss a game like that one here? The joke about framerate isn't a "code," it's to say that it will be very weird discussing only certain aspects of a game while pretending not to see its heavy-handed political elements which may be at the very core of the game's narrative... so what is left to discuss in those cases?
What exactly was political about TLOU2?
