Unredacted reaction to PS5's reveal, "We have a better product than Sony does" - Phil Spencer 30% GPU advantage

Phil spencer 2020 :
"We have a better product than Sony does, not just on hardware but equally important on the software platform and services on top of the hardware. We have the ingredients of a winning plan."

Phil spencer 2023 :
" we can't compete ... we lost console wars ... we are 3rd ... let me spend 70 billions " :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Then overlay some sales charts.

He's got an account here on GAF and Resetera. Of that I'm 100% certain.

I'm trying to empathize with Phil's position in March of 2020...with console launch 8 months away. He's talking to the CEO of Microsoft. Trying to butter Satya up.

Does Microsoft have a better product, on paper, just looking at hardware alone. Maybe. The teraflop debate was in full swing around that time and most people were firmly in the camp that Microsoft had the most powerful console with the best features. I still feel that Microsoft has the better features of the two consoles.

That being said, I have no fucking clue where he gets the software advantage from. I know he can't be talking about the games. The Series X launched with 0 exclusives. If he's talking about things like Variable Rate Shading and the other "tools"....I mean...maybe?

Comes off kinda desperate.

When I communicate with my boss and others in my management chain, I give them realistic assessments, highlight wins, and illustrate blockers/barriers to success.

I don't over promise hoping on a prayer that I can deliver, nor do I make the road untraveled look rosier than it is.

Numbers don't lie, we saw the 4k v 1800p launch with the likes of Hitman 3 and now we're getting RT in gameplay with Forza which the same people couldn't believe would happen. It just took time but he was right, expect more from the big first party games after Forza.

Behave. Miles morales did that 2 years ago. Are you also going to ignore all the games that run better on ps5? How about your favourite console: the Series s? Where games are being delayed because of it. I don't believe you aren't paid for your takes.

I think Sony made a much smarter decision going in. A much smaller chip with a faster gpu frontend + the [wildly misunderstood] continuous boost clock scheme. Paired with stronger lower level dev tools, PS5 pretty much matches the XSX give or take a few % in certain areas depending on the application.

MS chased teraflops and I think it's put them in a worse situation. I wouldn't be surprised if the decision not to do a proper mid gen refresh was at least somewhat informed by the difficulty of scaling up their chip.

With the PS5 hardware I get the feeling that pretty much every penny I spend on the console is paying for actual, effective, performance. They did everything they could to get that box as efficient as possible for the cost. With the XSX hardware I get the feeling that a significant chunk of the cost is just going to MS being able to say "we have 2 more TF"; despite the fact that relative to the PS5, those 2TF are effectively useless. And that's before we get to the XSS...

I think I posted this one before, but I think this would have been the smarter play (clicky for biggy):

That's very like Xbox under Spencer.

Remember how they shouted 6TF from the rooftops with One X reveal then did the same thing with Series X.

They care about the numbers and how those numbers comes across to the end user but users arent stupid. Almost halfway through this gen you don't see that 2TF advantage in a practical sense.

well he was right about the ssd prices giving sony an advantage, it only took 3 years.

the xbox external ssd are still expensive meanwhile you can get an ssd for ps5 at like half the cost

proprietary shit never works

30% GPU advantage?! Where the fuck did they get that from? Lol. Not even on plain numbers the advantage would be that. What a bunch of clowns.

Man this fuck up is absolutely ridiculous.

The consoles haven't even been out a full 3 years yet. The advantage was there the moment Sony enabled it 8 months after launch. And they've been getting cheaper and faster ever since.

he's not wrong the xbox is SO much better than the ps5. I love installing or even playing a disc game on my ps5 and it sounds like a fucking chainsaw going off in my room and yes I did the trick where you open it up and use a screw driver to make teh noise less...it is still awful.

Are you playing in complete silence or something? I can't hear either of mine in normal operation.

We haven't won anything yet. -Phil Spencer 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023(?)
Starfield has no shot winning GOTY. Likely Baldur's Gate 3 or Spider-Man 2. More likely Baldur's though.

The same one which knew about the impending Oberon Github leaks that were coming before the leaks were published, a MS owned Github. The same Discord that certain MS execs were also a part of. Not hard to parse the pre-launch/announcement FUD campaign back then.

Almost karmic, this.
You forgot Alex, the « journalist » from Digital Foundry...

That sounds like it's broken. My disc drive doesn't make any significant sound for the majority of the time that I play a disc game.

Damn he sound just like the Xbox fanboys on twitter lmao. And he clearly don't know shit about hardware neither.

And what of Starfield and Halo and Redfall and on and on and on. Numbers might not lie but Phil sure as hell does.

I thought it was pretty telling that "The worlds most powerful console" tag line was dropped pretty quickly after so many PS5 games technically surpassed the Series X.

This is the kind of email you send to keep spirits up in your company. Looking at it out of that context makes it looks ridiculous, of course.

"30%" More power, 70% less sales, -5% - +5% performance delta.

Why does this image keep popping up with these Redmond chaps.

This was pretty obvious to anyone with a functional brain.
Yet the fanboys and 'real gamers' aka platform-agnostics were in denial.

I'd like to see them respond to all this. Seems kindnof quiet in the Xbox camp.
Feels like talking to the equivalent of a Russian bot farm at times.

The way the narrative was charged to avoid saying PlayStation was beating Xbox was the equivalent to a kid picking up the ball and walking home.

That's a pretty pathetic comment to defend the indefensible.

The issue isn't email, where most first world countries have freedom of information requests anyway. The issue is the lack of foresight and arrogance needed to put your demented plans on paper like that.

What? So you think companies should have thier private emails made public? What on the earth kind of twisted take is that.
Freedom of information acts almost always pertain to government agencies, not private companies for the general public. Wow.

Demented plans? Wow again. Probably couldn't be more biased if you tried.

Were you trading in this unsubtantiated bullshit during the runup to the consoles launching?

It wasn't unsubstantiated, there were a ton of questions marks as to just how fast the ps5 could run before melting down. And I was hardly alone, even the mainstream press was wondering just how the metal would hit the road. Nice try at revisionist history though.

What did I revise? Sounds like I hit the nail on the head! You are describing the noise machine I remember saying everything from the PS5 had bad yields to it was going to be $600 till it was going to overheat it was going to be hard to program for so it was not going to have BC etc etc. Have you ever considered that you might be gullible?

Right, me and many industry professionals, we we all gullible and dumb. You are the smart one. The reality is none of us really knew for sure, your smokescreen doesn't change anything. I bought one day one, and have enjoyed it a lot.
Makes zero change to how the world actually saw it, despite your rose collored glasses.

Eurogamer was asking question like this in thier own articles, but ya, everyone thought it was going to be perfect from day one. (insert giant roll eyes here)
"On the face of it, PlayStation 5 delivers a ton of power, but there does seem to be an extra onus on developers to optimise to these new characteristics. The question is, what happens when the processor does hit its power limit and components down-clock?"
