Colin Moriarty: Concord cost 400M. Was viewed as the future of PS.

Concord was meant to be the future of PlayStation?!

THANK GOD it bombed spectacularly

I shudder to think those horrendous DEI characters design to be de facto of PlayStation characters in the future. It's bad enough we have to endure Aloy or Abby, but Concord characters are on another level of butchery

1,992 credits according to:

There are a hell of a lot of PlayStation Studios Creative Arts credits listed here. Lots of CGI and stunt work, and look at this:

They even got Weta roped into this. I know it's not Weta Digital, but it still can't be cheap to consult with a movie SFX company.
I'm not saying that this thing cost $400 million. But it is not completely outside of reason to speculate that.

Its telling us that Firewalk Studios have incompetent, talentless freak, staff to the point Sony had to rely on outsiders to help fix the game.

Sorry if already posted but yeesh

To be fair, you can't count the amount the original investors put into the game and the amount Sony spend on the purchase of the studio, because the sales price of the studio probably takes into account the amount invested into the studio.

Who were the investors? They were probably nervous as hell at the piece of junk their $200 million investment got them, then along came a bigger dupe in Sony to take the crap off their hands and allow them to recoup their investments and walk away with a profit.
Whoever at Sony who okayed this acquisition needs to be fired.

Why in the world would they make physical copies for something like this. It's an online game, for Christ sake. All that plastic waste for nothing.
I was surprised when I heard this was a retail release? What? You mean it's not a FTP?

I would never put this game on my resume.

I'd just say the last 7 years I worked on an indie title, or was a stay at home parent. Something.

All I'm going to say is anyone here that believes any bit of this is a total fucking clown just like Colin. He is just trying to get attention. Sony thought this game was going to be huge? I guess that's why they told investors they had no big games this fiscal year months and months ago right? What a clown show

I know people who fudge their Linkedin (length of employment) by adding an extra month or two to take it look like they got no gaps between jobs. And that's working at perfectly fine companies and jobs.

If people are willing to fib that minor stat, no doubt some people will lie about Concord. I just dont get how someone can lie good enough to cover let's say working FT on the game for 4 years!

Suicidal Squad lost $200 mil but WB still let the game run for at least a year.

Meanwhile, Sony shuts down Concord in mere days, with full refund too. That kind of indicate the level of disaster is worse than what we led to believe.
What any of that got to do with whether or not concord cost 400m to make? 400m would be the most expensive game ever released.

Look at the leaked insomniac slides on how much it cost to make Spiderman 2 and anyone with half a brain will know $400m to make concord is BS, especially considering Sony entered into a publishing agreement with firewalk in only in 2021.

Even more than the money, I find the 'no negative feedback' allowed to be worrisome. It's obvious there was a broken feedback loop within the studio - the game gives that away - and they also had no issue ignoring feedback from potential customers either. But if that extends to higher-ups outside of the studio, and it likely does, then that needs to be addressed and resolved. If not, they'll keep releasing games that appeal to no one but the (select) employees who make them which is a terrible outcome for both customers and the business itself.

I can say the same on why Spiderman 2 has anything to do with Concord? Both the game and studio have different backstory to the production of the game. One is a single player game, the other is a live service much like Suicidal Squad.

Also unlike Concord, Spiderman 2 is a single player game, made by a well established and experience studio, doesn't depend on live service so minus the expensive cost of renting servers, didn't need the help of 1700+ of outside contractors to fix the game.

Isn't he a very unreliable insider. He hasn't been in the business or relevant in how many years? And there is absolutely no way concord cost $400 million to make.

This type of behavior is not uncommon. You see it in government agencies, within law enforcement, private companies, everywhere. When you stop any negative feedback and critical thinking, you end up a cult. In the end you start to believe in your own magic tricks. Hopefully the'll learn something from this.

I completely agree. These people need to go back to college to learn the value of constructive criticism in an environment that welcomes it.

Yeah i agree, but even if you half it, is a colossal fuck up.
Oh for sure. And it would have definitely cost $200-$250M. It's clear they spent a lot of money on this, but the quality of the end-result just never showed that.

And it's a good thing it failed so spectacularly. These current-age developers and execs need to get their heads out of their asses.

I am using Spiderman 2 as reference point because there is actual data on how much Sony spent to make a AAA game. $340m and that includes marketing, which concord didnt have any.

At its peak for 3 years insomniac had between 220-250 employees working on the game. Firewalk only got 150 employees. The vast majority of SM 2 budget was to pay the salaries of insomniac and sony support studios employees.

What does outside contractors even mean? Where you even get that 1700 number from? The credits? That dont mean shit. SM 2 got almost 4000 people listed in the credits lmao.

If Concord was really meant to be "the future of PlayStation", I would love to see Hermen's face when he saw the post-launch charts lol

The incompetent floppy cnut that is Herman Hulst will feck over another project if he's not kick out on his ass tomorrow. Mark my words. There are more missteps from PS Studios coming under that wet fart.

Suicide squad kill the justice league cost warner bros $200 million which was more than the 1st suicide squad MOVIE.

Shit makes sense to me. Colin has been the most reliable source of industry news ever since Schreier went to Forbes.

Just cause Sony has development studios in southeast Asia doesn't mean that development costs still aren't super expensive. Especially if you go "oh fuck, concord is really in bad shape. We gotta shift resources."

There's a ton of cost shifting projects for these smaller studios. I think Sony has 6 of them but they all do different things. People really don't think critically when analyzing these issues.

Colin was always reliable and solid with his sources, so got no reason to doubt this, but holy fucking shit talk about an unbelievable figure, 400m for this steaming piece of shit, goddamn.

"Future of Playstation", Hulst championing it internally, you couldn't say anything bad about it - WTF!?

Can someone pinpoint the exact moment Sony shit the bed with PlayStation because I had a lot of fun on my PS4,things were pretty great back then.

That's the beauty of big, successful, public-limited companies. Terrible decisions and decision-makers do not last long, as long as consumers keep voting with their wallets.

We'll always get what we want in the end.

I was underwhelmed when it became clear that hor8zon and gow were gonna be cross gen. That made me pretty upset. I don't give a shit how many ps4 owners there are; they will move over if you just make the games next gen.

We need @James Sawyer Ford to set the record straight on this. Pls come back!
Season 3 Kid GIF by The Simpsons

It's also clear that someone wants to embarrass Herman Hulst here. No one else was named as involved but him... That's entirely purposeful and it's obvious why. People like to hate on Herman Hulst. If he cost Sony 400 million dollars, do you think the margin minded CFO of Sony Group would reward him with a promotion?
I've been thinking about this possibility yesterday.

I think the Co-CEO structure that Sony has adopted will lead to more of this.

No different than you'd get people egging on Xbox or PS leads with questions or doubt or accusations hoping they finally bite and someone answers.
I mean there's your answer. Did you ever see anyone "bite" and talk about the financial aspects of their failure?

Microsoft never disclosed any kind of profit/loss for a very long time, it took then spending 80 billion to start giving info on the profitability of their gaming division.

The closest thing we got was Phil giving a cope interview about Redfall, but even then we never really got any answers from him or anyone else about the financials of it.

LOL guy figures 50 million over 5 years cause he doesn't seem to realize 2020 and 2022 are years, or that 2019, 2021, and 2023 are not 5 years. He also doesn't seem to realize 1500 sq feet is the size of a small home a single person would typically live, not a corporate videogame studio housing 150 developers. Why would a 100 man team in 2021 be building a $600K 1500 sq ft office, on his hypothetically free land? I think guy may be genuinely retarded.
