Just finished watching the latest video for Marathon and it sounds really promising. Apparently there will be PvE and PvP elements, and you'll have to complete tasks and loots while trying to make your way out of hostile environment populated with AI enemies and other players. Also you can equip gears that will influence the players' abilities. The gameplay sounds really intense and fun

Could potentially end up as Sony's next successful AAA multiplayer game. I'll be there day one

I played Marathon way back when because my Mac wouldn't run Doom. Now that I no longer have that limitation in my life, I see no reason to approach this series.

I just can't get into extraction shooters. The update video they released was also a waste of time. Bloated development cycles and unnecessary public relations and marketing videos mean nothing these days. Just show gameplay if you have any confidence in your game.

They showed character designs and art, explained the overall concept, revealed PVE elements, upgrades, loot, etc.

They are also Bungie, one of the most successful FPS devs in the industry, not some start up.

So I think there's plenty of reasons to be excited. This game is dark sci fi, not some cheery DEI design by committee unlike Concord run by toxic positivity

I hype for it, but need to see more.

I don't doubt Bungie as they might be the most solid team for multiplayer on console in all of gaming, but I need to see a bit more

The concept is an extraction shooter.

They're also Bungie, who drove Destiny into the ground with some of the worst design, monetisation, and structure in gaming. And the people who built the storied name are long gone.

We have no idea how Marathon has been put together. All we know is what they've shown. Which, after their massive price tag and years of development, ain't much. You're welcome to be excited, but proclaiming "Sony's next AAA multiplayer hit!" at this point is just silly.

I don't see how being an extraction shooter is a negative by itself. It's just a genre. Genre's can be good or bad. Depends on how it's implemented.

Bungie, and frankly most GaaS developers, are navigating a complex landscape of how to monetize their games and keep the audience engaged. It's not exactly straightforward, and they were pioneers in that respect, so it's not unexpected for there to be stumbles along the way. Many GaaS titles are forged despite these challenges. I would not say that Destiny has the "worst design/structure" in gaming, in fact it has one of the best - there's a reason it has amassed a huge audience that still continues for 10 years after it launched. That's not an easy feat. And it's because the gameplay loop, mechanics, and loot structure is generally highly addictive and appealing. Yes, it has a lot of issues surrounding the organization of all the countless amounts of content, but the core game is absolutely sublime to play.

All I am saying is that there's enough that we've heard about Marathon thus far to be excited about it if you are open and not outright dismissive of the extraction shooter genre altogether. I don't think Marathon is guaranteed to be an AAA hit, but at the same time I think it has the strongest chance out of any new GaaS project in development (non-Sony included).

Nah, I think that makes a lot of sense looking into that team's success.

If driving Destiny to the ground to you is a series with over 50 plus million units sold (btw we don't even have a update to that number that is from 2018 or 2019) and Destiny 2 was at like 20 million by 2022 I don't really know what could be considered successful to you

From Halo to Destiny, 2 IP they've created that have moved over 50 million, imagine trying to fucking say THAT is silly to expect their next FPS online title to be a hit

On the contrary. Destiny was a looter shooter, which was basically brand new. That genre was fertile ground, and the genre alone was exciting. Extraction shooters were the hot new thing back when Marathon would've been put together, indicating Bungie are more than likely chasing a GaaS trend instead of creating a new one. If Naughty Dog announced a new Battle Royale, I'd be just as skeptical, because a genre tells us a lot about the project.

You're conflating the "30 seconds of fun" gameplay loop with Bungie's game design and structure. Being as Destiny's loop basically copied Halo's loop, we know it's rock solid, and so do Bungie. The structure around it was MMO-lite, and Bungie's implementation of it has ranged from "fine" to "crisis meeting at the studio before they go bankrupt". Their new player experience is legendarily bad, and it has been almost since the beginning. The activities range from "wtf were they thinking" to "Vault of Glass". Bungie can make terrific gun play - the best around, in fact - but in terms of crafting everything else, they're hit and miss at best. That's not a GaaS thing, that's a Bungie thing. Their name was built on Halo, and the names that built Halo are gone. Their current studio is built on Destiny, and those names are gone, too. "Bungie" isn't enough to get me interested in and of itself, and that'll be true for a lot of people. "Bungie extraction shooter" sits alongside "Early access survival crafting" in terms of interest levels.

Which comes down to "Marathon could be a great extraction shooter", which is true of any unreleased extraction shooter. But extraction shooters have never been as big as Battle Royale, and Bungie's name isn't worth what it once was. Add them together for a sizeable "wait and see". So, until I see some gameplay, I'm not seeing anything that declares Marathon as "Sony's next AAA multiplayer hit".

I think the fact that the extraction shooter genre hasn't had as much popularization is actually a huge opportunity for Bungie here. It means there's potential for them to broaden the genre to a wider audience and that the genre isn't currently crowded with deeply entrenched mega titles.

That's a fair point - Bungie certainly helped popularise the looter shooter genre. However, I feel games like EFT have cornered that market somewhat, and given the extreme nature of the premise, it's an instant turn off for many. Unless Bungie soften the premise entirely, I can't see it exploding like Destiny 1 did which was basically "Halo meets WoW". Steam's seen plenty of F2P extraction titles - Dungeon Crawlers in particular - and the complaints are all virtually the same. Bungie will need more than art design, and given Destiny 2's trajectory, I'm just not sure they have it any more.

Destiny 2 ended up a high note, so they still got it.

We'll see about the popularity, I don't think it's intended to be as big as Destiny, but it can possibly carve out a very successful niche like HD2.

Some impressions from reason playtests suggest that it's more broadly appealing in the extraction shooter genre and people shouldn't write it off on that basis

That means very little given Sony's recent AAA multiplayer failure, which had plenty of press telling people not to write it off. Until we see something, it's all just PR.

Sony overpaid, the price tag is a sunk cost. They reduced headcount to right size operating costs. They will support Destiny and Marathon as primary IP going forward. They don't need Marathon to be a destiny level hit. I don't think the overall scope of the game will be large enough to hit like Destiny does.

A good barometer for success will be if it can do similarly to HD2, imho.

Sure, yeah I think marathon is going to cost about 8 trillion dollars not too dissimilar from concord being the most expensive game ever made at 68B, so expectations are high and yeah it's probably best to expect disappointment because Bungie can't make good games and all GaaS is bad so let's just hope that best case Bungie closes and 800 people lose their jobs, worst case it causes a nuclear industrial bomb that takes down the entire industry

In all seriousness …However successful HD2 is, Destiny is a far greater one, and you have repeatedly tried to make it out as a failure. So which is it? HD2 would be a modest success relative to what Destiny sold, my barometer is reasonable for a Non-Destiny tier Bungie game releasing on all platforms.

It's a high bar to reach HD2, but if it comes up a little bit short (10M vs 15M), it's still a success imho. 5M or less would be a disappointment

I have to agree with OP. Tarkov is insanely popular and addictive for a reason. I have friends playing it like crazy.

Bungie doing their take on Tarkov with this gorgeous art style AND their experience from Halo/Destiny? Could be huge.

I'm not even a fan of Bungie but wouldn't come into this reaction. It sounds more promising than a Halo to me. Never been a big fan of Halo other than when I first saw it on PC Gamer in around 2000~. Unfortunately the game never hit for me other than when in co op (which they removed)
 
Used to play the hell out of Destiny for the first few years but I have absolutely ZERO interest in an extraction shooter, so this game is DOA for me.
 
This shows how much blind faith people have into some company or genre they like. They haven't even showed any gameplay footage and yet we're getting 'intense gameplay' comments

BTW. Good job on damage control, do you sleep at all? You are very active convincing everyone that Sony didn't lose 400m on concord, defending any Sony game and making team blue proud. Sometimes I wonder if you are getting paid for this?
 
The PC crowd likes the extraction shooter thing, so it can find a community there. Maybe it will work on consoles, who knows. I like shooters but I have no interest in this. We still haven't seen gameplay. That director or designer or whoever in the recent video was hard to listen to. How long has this been in development? Bungie isn't who Bungie used to be... How monetized will it be? There just isn't enough here to be excited about right now, and nothing has been said or shown beyond the usual marketing hype and promises that mean absolutely nothing.
 
An extraction shooter? The immediate reference is Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction which is available right now at 40$ goes much less on sales and it's F2P on gamepass. I'm sure there are tons of these type of games on PC right now.

If they can get it out the door in a tolerable, but playable state. Otherwise, it'll end up being another Concord situation.
