Who would have thought that out of the big threats ( Apple, Google , Amazon , Disney etc) waiting in the shadows that it would be Facebook

It makes sense. They put themselves into an emerging market and quickly dominated...

flatscreen console gaming is mostly solved now. You either get a Playstation or a Switch. Nobody's gonna give time to a new competitor when the 2 established platforms have proven themselves through 40+ years of innovation and hits.

That's why you carve out a new market and attempt to prove yourself there. And it seems to be working for Facebook/Meta.

If only Valve got off their ass and gave us deckard maybe we'd have some competition in VR

I mean they bought Occulus.. it was a bit surprising due to the company's background, but it's not like they home grown took over the market or anything. Any of those players could hve bought Occulus and then lost 10's of billions a year on VR lol

who else the Vr headset from apple?

Steams pricy as fuck one? 😏

There is no real big competition

Bro forgot Steam for flatscreen gaming.

They've thrown billions at it, and have so far been the only ones to produce a mass market, standalone, wireless headset. Sony fucked up with their PSVR2, and Valve are dragging their heels on Deckard.

Feels like this is currently a win by default. I just hope somebody else joins in properly before VR really takes off (which is inevitable, once the hardware is of a decent size, and the visual fidelity is greater).

They need to fix the sickness stuff movement doesn't feel fluid or mainstream for me yet. Not sure what the issue is graphics quality or the frames but moving doesn't feel up to it yet

Valve will come back- with all the leaks it's inevitable. It's just that they should get around to doing it sooner than later. Quest 3 is very tempting, the only thing it lacks is eye tracking and OLED....

Yes, if you have $5-10 billion to lose yearly, you too can "conquer" VR.

This sort of cash only a handful of corpos in the world can afford to lose and even there need a founder with tight control.

The only person I can think of who would've thought that is onQ123.
All I got is this ( Which they did & it worked out great)

at least there is a market. Good for them. I'm firmly believe that VR (none VR games) could enable the "IMAX" experience for "flat games" beyond just a bigger screen.

Was gonna say. The other companies aren't stupid.

And I imagine the main use is porn.
Porn, fitness, short game experiences, some VR chat sort of shit I imagine.

But yeah, Zuck's and Gil's of having full on AR and futuristic ad shit is going to cost like $100billion with uncertain returns.

He can do it since Meta is making a ton of money and he and friends have controlling shares. If Satya tried it he might have been booted. Although looking at Xbox spend, who the f knows now days for the mega corps.

I love my Quest 3, no doubt. Married with my PC, it's a brilliant piece of kit. Currently playing Skyrim VR Mad God, and it's mind blowing.

However... I'm hoping Deckard represents another significant jump in technology, whenever it is they eventually get around to announcing it.

I firmly believe that VR will go the way of the 3D TV.

To verify my assumption I recently bought a Quest 3. I did some further research that required me to buy the following games:

- Dungeons of Eternity
- Asgard's Wrath 2
- Moss 1 & 2

My conclusion so far is that I need to buy a few more games until I have enough proof that VR is the 3D TV of the 2020s.

Most VR games look like they were made by one or two devs in their basement.
Now imagine when it gets to the point where its a handful of people that just make games cuz they love them like it was the case back in '04?

Release some awesome stuff before the GAAS and DEI stuff gets involved.

Pledged allegiance to the psvr, you're going to get games like beat saber, resident evil 7, I got into "firewall" a competitive online shooter quickly, vr is a platform might have some life left, they face a $ problem, if you bundle it with a console it could be a phenomenon like motion controls with the Wii.

I still fail to see how this is a win for Meta. At the beginning it was obvious they want this to drive further their engagement with the platform, just in a new way. This has failed, people don't care about badly animated avatars doing random shit, we had that on X360, was as popular then as it is now.
Ok, so they pivoted, but I cannot imagine anyone at Meta is happy with where they are right now regarding VR. Nobody there gives a fuck about gaming.

This topic madee want to check in which pace Facebook endeavors are and, well ...

MR is the end game & Just think about this if Quest becomes the default MR headset & they get smaller & replace the PC , Tablet or Smartphone . That would be a real power move.

I think finding a niche within VR is a hell of a lot smarter than going into a market dominated by 2 longtime forces and expecting to become a mainstay.
Smarter to the tune of losing $billions every year? I mean sure Apple or Google could pull that off as well, but why would they?

Hell, Apple already got the AR/VR money loser of their own and Google tried multiple times.

You realize that Quest is one of the go to Christmas gifts now for the last few Christmas ?
Yeah and 99% of them will sit in a box collecting dust within 6 months. That's not how you become a threat for the rest of the industry.

They was a threat before they ever sold one device. Now they're selling just as well or better than Xbox Series consoles & left PSVR2 & PSVR2 in the dust.

By the way I didn't mean a threat as they was going to take out the big 3 but a threat as in one of these companies was going to jump in & become a big part of the mix. Everyone knew these big companies was coming.

They aren't a threat to anyone except those who try to enter the VR market. People buy vr headsets to get a new experience, doesn't mean anything except lots of sold headsets.

Ok but a threat to the Big 3 it isn't. Otherwise Apple and the iPhone and Samsung with Galaxy is a bigger threat, making your title wrong.

The Quest is being sold to a market as a different multipurpose device just like a phone.
