Sorry for the naive question, if I own a PS3 and own the physical (or digital) version of a game, is it ok for me to download and play those games using an emulator or that is still a grey legal area?
Would I get into trouble for doing so ?

Ahh man that sucks, kinda a deal breaker for me. Even the PS2 emulator has issues. So far the the best PlayStation emulator I've tried was the one for PSP, legitimately the best way to play those games and the library is absolutely stacked. Crazy that many of those games and along with Vita are prettyuch lost to that hardware unless you use emulation.The compatibility list is still too low for me though. So many games have bugs of all sort. Same for Xenia. About 70% are at playable state from start to finish. It includes audio visual bugs of all kind it's annoying.
It's cool to have crisp graphics, but then you got to get used to the inauthentic feeling of having most of og ps3 features cut off.
Edit: I've been using emulators a lot for the last 2 years. And I still prefer buying authentic and playing on real console. It's absolutely awesome to have the option though, the emulators developers do fantastic work!

Well it's still worth a try. Many work flawlessly! But sometime it's frustrating when the ONE title you wanted to play really bad turns up being a buggy mess.
Ps2 is very good and yes PPSSPP is awesome I love it too.
My favorite emulator is dolphin! Plays every gc and wii games like a charm it's so fun tbh. I use a 3rd party wii bar sensor bought on Amazon. Plugged to the laptop.

PCSX2's emulation, at this point, is very, very good. There are very few games with noticeable problems.
Duckstation is similar. There are certainly edge cases, but in 99% of cases, games play better than on physical, vintage hardware - and with achievements.
RPC3 is a bit different, because of the complexities of PS3 emulation. But, there's something that people should keep in mind with it - just because RPC3 or the compatibility list describes your game as 'ingame' instead of 'playable' isn't necessarily an indication of the actual state of the emulation. Case in point, I just booted Ridge Racer 7, which was set to 'ingame' in 2021. The game runs flawlessly, I just completed an arcade circuit with no visible glitches. Perhaps there was something slightly off, but to me, it was so imperceptible that I didn't even see it. So, just keep that in mind - the compatibility list is an importance resource, but it isn't always a definitive map of what's working and what isn't.

Fyi sleeping dogs is 1080p/30 on PS5, the Xbox version does the system level FPS Boost to 60fps.
When you do, make sure to get the DLC episodes as well, they're often on sale.
This was the dark time when studios were putting out the real endings to the games as DLC packs.

Playing PS3 Demon's Souls @ 4k/60 fps on my PC is incredible. And that's basically what I use emulators for, games that aren't available expect through outdated hardware. The thing that bugs me the most is that this shit could easily run on the PS5 and PS5 Pro, so the fact that Sony ignores their PS3 library really sucks.

I still have my PS3, but I have used rpcs3 for games that do not run well on the orginal PS3. Playing The Darkness, which never got a PC port, at a locked 60fps is great.

I think that you should have a HDTV for PS3 era games, 4K tellys don't do justice to them. Same with CRT and Wii, PS2 etc.

Best way now days to play PS3 and X360 games is to utilize Retrotink 4K as it upscales 720p or 1080i input cleanly to 4K. It’s kind of pricey though.

Yeahhh we have no need to worry about that on PC. Not to mention playable on any
PCs easily and other benefits.
Another old game is Deadly Premonition is unavailable on modern consoles, but is on PC. Unless you count Nintendo Switch, which many people here doesn’t seems to have.

Most of those games can be bought on steam/gog, except for Drakengard 3 and trinity souls of zill o'll.
How are you playing them, are you playing these games on pc, using a torrent download, or using a disc? If a disc do you have a dedicated blue-ray drive? If so how much did it cost, as last I remember blue-ray usb drives werent cheap. I don't have any disc drive on my pc (its been about 15 years since I had a dvdrw drive).
I want to play cloudberry kingdom (a small indie with 100+ levels, that is only on ps3 and 360, but not on the series x), Tokyo Jungle, Resistance 1-3, motorstorm 1-3, infamous 1-2, Heavenly Sword, Fuel, Tales of Xillia 1 and 2, GT5/GT6, Killzone 1-3, Gow 1&2, Disgaea 3, etc...
A lot of the 3rd party games that are not on pc are on the xbox, with many on the series x (got one as a gift last year), but all the exclusives and indies are not and are not playable anywhere else.
I still own my ps3 but it's bluetooth and wifi chip is fried (apparently they are on one chip and the first ps3 slim its directly on the motherboard so you can replace it), so its a pain in the ass to play anything with a wired controller. Plus original controllers don't work anymore without a working battery. My ps2 and psp are still kicking though.

I'm playing them on PC. No disc drive. Most of the games I listed I've purchased on Steam/GoG and the rest downloaded on different rom sites and run through RPCS3. I also own every one of them on PS3 on physical disc or digital. I haven't dumped them or anything like that.

What really is irritating is Sony could put out a ps5 ps3 emulator to play old ps3 games, but wont. I'd even re-buy digital copies if they are going to be bitches about disc versions.

There are so many awesome games stuck on ps3, ps2, psp and ps1 that they are neglecting. The streaming psplus expensive teir isn't the answer either as I don't want to be spending on an expensive sub, and it's also only a handful of games, not the ones I want.

Yeah Sony has been super shitty since ps4 with backwards compatibility. They even took out the "Compact Disc" logo from the ps4 and ps5 so they won't play music cds or ps1 games (though they could if they had paid the few cents per ps4/ps5 for the software rights).
Sony could of easily let us play our purchased ps1 games at least, but they don't even do that. Only a handful have been ported. Yet on psp/vita/ps3 there was 100s.
If they won't do ps1/ps2 the sure as hell won't do ps3. Not in modern California sony era.
PS3 and early ps4 was gamer focused. Once they won the console war they got cocky and care more about "modern audiences" then their old school fans that got them where they are today.
Why I still have 1080p sets from 2013/2014. Why get rid of what works? More ports, my one tv alone has 4 hdmi, svideo, component, composite, vga, usb, and some other weird port, New tvs (at least from my strolling best buys) have what 2 hdmi ports max. This means an adapter is needed. I play my ps2, wii and mini modded tg-16, genesis , snes and ps classic on it and it still looks fine. (yeah crt would be better but I am not buying one for that)
You and me both. Why they won't port it. I also enjoyed The last guy and Trash panic, shatter, and cloudberry kingdom. All locked on ps3.
This is peak gaming for me. This is why I want a decent PC that can play this sort of game. Basically play up to Switch games but at 4k. Even my m4 can do it on a lot of games and some of my PC library.
Decent visuals but not enough attention it takes away from the options and modeling of say armor and being able to customizer the character. Just so much depth in this period and a little later.

Most would like to say it is us getting older and feeling nostalgic but no, it isn't that! Games were just FAR better then that what is released today! Like I mentioned in the Terminator 2D thread, the fact I am so excited to play an old school 2D side scroller as opposed to the majority of triple A shit released today speaks volumes. And the fact that triple A in the PS360 era and before that was so fantastic compared to most of the slop today is a real slap in the face to people who claim that gaming has never been better!!! The fact we are constantly getting remasters of old games is testament to how good gaming once was.

The proof really is in the pudding with the endless remasters and remakes. I'd have that over many new titles. Every now and again an Armored Core FR pops up and we jump on that like an alcoholic who found the secret stash at rehab.

Just cause something looks "better" today and requires more powerful hardware and thousands of people to make a game as opposed to a handful of devs making a game in the past does NOT make it a better game! I will take Super Mario World (developed by 10 people) over ANY of the slop released today that is sometimes made by thousands of devs for hundreds of millions of dollars! And I can guarantee you that in 20 years time, Super Mario World will stand the test of time. Will Assassin's Creed Odyssey?

Sony don't care anymore dude. There's literally a pirate store natively accessible on both PS3 + Vita and they still haven't taken any action.
A Plasma TV is also a top tier option if you aren't loaded.

Sourcing a plasma and running that is arguably more pain vs spending $750 on Retrotink but yeah, I imagine if you have a good Panasonic or Pioneer one, it should be pretty darn good.

Oh I've got dibs on my mum's old 1080p Panasonic whenever she decides to upgrade. Plasma technology is fantastic and was the true successor to CRT imo (at least until OLED arrived). Really wish it caught on.

This thread made me fire up RPCS3 on PC, configure Killzone 2 and Motorstorm Pacific Rift at glorious 4k 60fps (Killzone runs at 40-60fps). Kami no longer works unfortunately, they stopped updating it back in 2023. I had to configure m+kb through RPCS3, it's janky in Killzone 2 but still much better than controller. And holy shit does Killzone 2 still look good all these years later!
Also installed RPCS3 on my Steam Deck for Virtua Tennis 3 and 4. Unfortunately 3 runs quite well but looses frames, yet 4 runs at 60 fps flawlessly. It is a shame since I prefer VT3, to 4. If anyone by any chance knows a steady 60fps RPCS3 config for VT3, please let me know.
