Demon's Souls Remake is sorely dissapointing in the art direction

Wtf maybe I should check a video on the differences. It had been about 6 years since I last played the original before the remake. I'd be hard pressed to put my finger on any significant changes. I knew it probably wasn't 1:1 but it didn't seem to be missing anything, including the atmosphere.

So I finally bought a PS5, was able to buy my cousins at a cheap price because they upgraded to a Pro.
Basically GTA 6 was my reason for buying the console, as I want to play it the day it comes out.

For most Sony games I'm able to just play them on PC, with better quality visuals and framerates than what the PS5 can churn out.
However I did have my sights set on Demon's Souls. I can't remember if I played Dark Souls or Demon's Souls first, but when I did play Demon's Souls on PS3, it was an eye opening experience.

Not only is the game extremely atmospheric, and has an phantasmal or ghost/spirit like feel to it. Every scream visceral, from enemies and enviroments.

Booting up the Demon's Souls remake however.. I was very dissapointed from the start. Not only is the intro cinematic worse, it features worse music as well.

ORIGINAL

REMAKE

Not only did they change the menu sounds (why??), basically a lot of sounds are changed or removed, music has been changed/added/removed as well.
What is the purpose of this? Why did they decide this would fit better with the game?

Going into the Tower of Latria, I was expecting to be greeted with extremely loud bells, crickets, and screams from the prisoners. But sadly, the same atmosphere was not present at all.

Check the difference in sounds alone, not even counting enemy designs etc.

ORIGINAL

REMAKE

This is just based on one level, and a few sounds etc that I'm missing, that makes an extreme difference to the general atmosphere.

Tower of Latria in the original is very oppressive, and it makes you scared to continue. In the remake I had none of these feelings.

Then there is the Nexus theme. WHY in gods name did Bluepoint decide, oh we need a new Nexus theme??? The one that was there was ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.

ORIGINAL

REMAKE

In all honesty I can't even say much more because I didn't bother playing more. These struck me so much and pulled me out of the game, dissillusioned about how such a remake came to be.
Why in gods name did they decide these changes were good? Overseen by nobody from FromSoft I assume.

Because they got all the shit wrong. And it makes me really sad, because I was quite looking forward to playing this.

Basically this video rings true to me.

It's not just music, the look and feel of the game is different.

Im NOT saying its a bad game, obviously its not, but the remade parts are having me scratch my head in confusion.

Also NOT saying the game is ugly, or not the best looking PS5 title. I'm talking about art direction and atmosphere,

Didn't play the original until after I played the remake, and I just feel that the remake is much better...

I've been a hardcore Souls fan since DeS on PS3, Demon's Souls remake is one of the top 10 remakes of all time and *still* one of the best showcases for the PS5 whether it's the visuals, 3D audio or DualSense haptics, period. So while one could nitpick about this or that it just comes off as pedantically homosexual 👌

I think the design of the world and characters/creatures is generally an upgrade in the remake. There are some things that are just overdone such as Vanguard and the Fat Official. Generally it's fine but they went overboard in some areas. Not a deal breaker for me but I can see why it would irk some people.

The atmosphere was definitely improved if we’re talking about lighting and fog elements.

The original game was ugly af

Bluepoint made a massive glow up out of that original trash visuals
Yeah, I never played the original because it didn't appeal to me back then - and it was so ugly and technically retarded. I love the remake though, and looking at comparison videos I really can't see that the original has any advantages whatsoever. Feels like rose-tinted nostalgia glasses to me but what do I know.

I'm mostly talking about the music and sound effects, and to a lesser extent some of the enemy designs.

One cannot deny graphically/technically its amazing and far beyond the original.

Lmao, i own all mini consoles and only have a ps5 and switch atm. Generally play everything on pc. So no
Mister console warrior who pretends ever playing the original and then make a thread about how bad the remake is compared to the original cuz none of these ever made it to pc.
Please show me any proof that you played these in any shape or form so you had enough knowledge about these games to make a thread about it.

I start with showing you my first throphy for both games as evidence..

Bro, if you're going to post cringy garbage, at least be considerate and make sure your images aren't fifty fucking miles long.

I really enjoyed the remake but I still don't understand why it's considered some type of benchmark with visual design/graphics.

It didn't impress me that much with the graphics. Maybe at 30fps it would have but the game is unplayable in cinematic mode.

PS4 Elden Ring on a PS5 looks better.

The most disappointing thing about this remake is that are there no changes or additional content not even the missing land of giants. This is the problem with From themselves not doing the remake.

Bluepoint are fairly overrated when it comes to remasters and remakes. Generally they are pretty good - they haven't produced any Virtuos-tier disasters - but they are absolutely not the perfect porting house who deserve gushing praise from outlets like Digital Foundry. For example, they botched a lot of the effects in the original HD Collection of MGS. We had to wait for the Master Collection to correct some of those longstanding issues (despite all of the bitching about that release because muh 4K). Someone like Nightdive are deserving of far more praise in my opinion, if you can get over that some of their top people think political violence is acceptable.

Good to know more people share my opinion on the Remake. Bluepoint took everything that made Demon's Souls special out of the remake. I booted the game as an early PS5 title and was the only game I hard regret buying. It's funny because Bluepoint did an incredible job with Shadow of the Colossus PS3 remaster and the PS4 remake, so I was confident they would do the same with Demon's Souls and respect the original game and it's presentation, only bringing the graphics up to modern standards and giving some quality of life changes to the game.

The different art direction destroyed the atmosphere of the original game. They went a step above and tweaked with designs for bosses like Flamelurker and destroyed it by giving a generic skull for it's face instead of the melting flesh it had.

Not to mention, but gameplay is different as well. It's less responsive even at 60 FPS and it a weird lag input.

I tried my hardest to like the Remake but could never enjoy playing past the first few sections of each archstone. The more I saw of the Remake, the more it tarnished the precious memories I had of my first souls game. So I'll keep playing on emulators.

I really dont understand.

Its a remake not a remaster. Hence the name.

This not a tomb raider or soul reaver situation .

Hell i got more out of the syatem shock remake than the original.

And i enjoyed the remake here more than the original

And i enjoyed the remake here more than the original
And that's totally fine.

Oh, and about System Shock, I did enjoy it more as it enhanced the experience and captured what the original to do. It was a good remake. Demon's Souls remake feels like a Shipe of Theseus where the sum of all the small changes across the game turned the Remake into a very different experience for most people. I'd have like if Bluepoint didn't stray from original too much, but good that you liked it.

Yup agree with OP, music, atmosphere and sounds were incredibly bad such a downgrade. Graphics were really good for me next gen, but my favorite level tower of latria lost all its creepy, erie, cool magic, or like the swamp, never felt that same magic in the remake like the original.

But just to ease your conscience, I checked and I finished Demon's Souls before you but thats ok :messenger_tears_of_joy: 🙏

Yes it is a lot different. Kind of expected being someone else's work many years on with much more powerful hardware to showcase.

Would be good to have a more faithful official PC version or remaster. Doesn't have to be a lot of work, the low budget gritty feel is the charm the game and it's a very important one.

Mad I love this game. Some of the best visuals this gen and the gameplay ages like a fine wine. I disagree that there is a problem with the art direction, as it is superb, although different.

This is the route I'm taking rn, actually. I'm making my way through it right now and then I'm going to play the OG to compare. I'm curious to see these downgrades in artistic direction more objectively without nostalgia. I'm going to keep an open mind.

It's totally possible that those who make that claim are right while those who say the opposite are just blinded by shiny graphics.

I didn't like the flamelurker redesign but aside from that i thought it was great and pretty "on brand". I think they ultimately fixed the flamelurker too due to backlash if memory servers. Now where TF is muh bloodborne remake?!

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Love me some DS but it was clearly a prototype to things they later improved with some really dodgy tech, designs and graphics showing it was a mish mash of scrapped assets Miyazaki salvaged into a solid game, I wouldn't claim everything is perfect (or even intentionally as it should have been). If you want it 1:1 play the original (or improved in PCSX3 with high res & fps, restored online, etc.), worrying about menu sounds, lol. Some designs are lesser, for others it's pretty subjective and for most it's just bs really. Play From games if all you want is 100% their take on it. Also what year is this...

The Remake completely misses the point id the story. I don’t Bluepoint even understood the plot.

Explain Latria. I’m holding out hope that one day a DS Remake enjoyer will defend that.
You know whats funny? Demon souls came out more than 4 years ago.

Let that sink in

I also quite missed this song. It's so beautiful.

Perhaps if the game does ever come to PC, mods can fix at least a OST toggle.

The only thing that was a downgrade was the music and a few of the enemy designs. They really should have an option to switch to the original OST.

Buddy this remake is one of the finest .

Stop pc port begging or change your name to alex bukkake.

Again you might have just started the remake but you are 4 plus years late with your complain.

Hard disagree. The remake is superior to the original in every way including art direction, outside maybe of a few outliers. I don't think the music was anything special in the original by the way.

This thread is a just a pc port beg thread.
OP is grasping for straws .

Lets be frank. No one would have ever thought demon souls will get a remake after bloodborne remake not happening.

And this at console launch.
We are blessed we even got this at all and i finished it and loved every minute of it.

Bitching about the music hahaha come on.
This game looks and plays like a dream but oh my god the music hurts my ears lol.

Even silent hill 2 remake had their soundtrack remade and its miles better than the original but still recognizable. Does it change the experience?

OP must have OCD or something
