Goddamn. OLED TVs are no joke.

Last five years I've had a shitty 65" TCL LED TV in the living room. Got it to fill space but didn't think it would suck as much as it did, but the price tag was my first hint. Streaky backlight, terrible contrast, pathetic blacks, horrendous response time, etc.

Impulsively replaced our two TVs with LGs C4 OLEDs. Ho-ly-shit. My eyes have been blessed by God.

What an upgrade. I knew it would be big, but wow. The blacks are ridiculous. The contrast? Infinite (obviously). The colors are so natural and vibrant without looking alien. The detail?! Absurd. Response time is of course near instant.

I also just got new glasses after a decade with my last pair which were scratched and outdated prescription. So my eyes are getting pampered lately.

I'm not abandoning PC gaming by any means, but this (in conjunction with a PS5 pro) was my attempt at getting away from my desk.

What should I watch to really test these bad boys out!?

Start with an avatar, both are pretty sweet to be honest as eye candy 👍😎

But some nature docs, planet or blue earth. That’ll give you some eye porn to get going with 😁

Now buy an OLED monitor, phone and smartwatch.

I’m still rocking two 60” Pioneer Kuro’s. Once they go, OLED is the only thing that comes close. Panasonic is back in the US also with new OLEDs, and they are rated pretty well. Congrats on the C4s, must be a major upgrade from LED.

Watch Toy Story 4 (the final carnival scene), I dont think ive ever seen HDR this good.

Then watch this Tron Legacy clip:

Basically anything that is set at night. My Sony and Samsung HDR tvs are really good at HDR so switching to OLED wasnt exactly a transformative difference, but every once in a while in a dark movie you really get to appreciate the OLED picture quality.

Did you stick them in bright rooms?

When I was hunting last year I ended up going with a mini led Bravia because I was worried about OLEDs in a room with direct sunlight all day.

No. Not bright rooms.

Not that it would matter, because I watch movies at night with all lights off and all blinds shut tight.

I watched a shitload of movies before. Now I won't be able to stop myself. Also already had a disc PS5 and got the disc drive for the pro. So now both bedroom and living room are UHD ready.

Don't stream it! Watch a proper 4k blu ray.

Nice! I got a C3 in 2023 and the first thing I played on it was Final Fantasy XVI and the title screen alone had colors I had never seen on a TV before. Mind you, I had never really seen HDR and OLED TVs in action before. It was incredible.

My friend, alternatively, plays his PS5 on a small cheap 1080p computer monitor and it drives me nuts. Multiple times he has sent me links to $100 monitors on sale and asks if they would be better than what he has for PS5. This man's household income is higher than 90% of the rest of my state, but he says he'll never spend $500, let alone $1000 on a screen.

Mate get your PC on OLED. It’s the greatest thing imaginable, especially if you’re into older games, emulation, old SD movies that never got HD releases etc. Make use of some incredible CRT shaders.

I skipped on oled since they stutter alot with sub 60 fps content which makes them useless for my needs. A shame since the oled on my switch does look nice.

LG OLED TVs have various user configurable motion interpolation algorithms that fix stuttering in movies, games and sports broadcasts without creating a soap opera effect. Works really well.

Congrats. I upgraded my LG C9 OLED yesterday with the Samsung S90D QD-OLED. Just when you think OLED cant get better, along comes QD-OLED. I was a believer a few months ago when I bought a QD-OLED UW monitor for my PC. Better peak brightness and color saturation, IMO. I will say though, I hate the Samsung UI and the remote. LG hands down wins there. LG also wins with ease of mounting. I went back and forth between the Samsung and the LG C4 and decided to give Samsung a shot for my 3rd OLED TV.

Still enjoying my C1.
It now makes me a bit annoyed when movies intentionally go for that low contrast washed out look that will give you those grey blacks no matter what lol.

Absolutely no burn in after more than 3 years either.
To this day the only thing I hate about it is how it insists on constantly switching the audio to "game mode", which sounds terrible. Can't believe they still don't have an option that's just "don't change my fucking settings for this input"

Maybe it's better in the newer ones but I find the all the interpolation options on my C1 look weird.
I watch all content with that stuff disabled and I think it looks fine. The whole "anything under 60fps on OLED looks terrible" thing seems way overblown IMO

IMO you still need to turn on interpolation to remove judder during horizontal/vertical panning shots but it's enough to set that algorithm to its lowest setting.
This would remove most if not all of the judder but it could create interpolation artifacts on my old C6 from 2016 (last model with 3D support). Those artifacts are completely gone on my current G4 OLED (last year's model).

Not as much as home theatre nut as I was when I was younger, these days I just go middle of the road TVs, but I do have a Samsung Odyssey G8 OLED supervise monitor and yeh, OLED really blows everything else out of the water. Ridiculous black levels and it punches colours without blowing out or having that really digital enhancements overdone look.

If I was looking for top of the line on a TV it would be OLED all day.

Nice one OP, now try playing some 30fps games on it, the judder is marvelous 😁

It's quite easy to avoid. Just don't play games in 30fps, this feamerate belongs in a museum. 40fps is the new 30fps (40fps doesn't stutter on OLED so it's not that all <60 content looks garbage).

For movies it's easy to avoid problems using some form of frame smoothing for 24/30fps content.

This is a timely thread, I'm looking to get a new TV this year and am leaning torward OLED. Is the C4 a good buy right now? I've also been eyeing some of the higher end Hisence Mini-Led's which are a bit cheaper. I'm just worried about brightness, because I really don't like dim displays.

I went absolutely crazy when I used a OLED TV. Movies from the 1990s looked better with dejudder set to 2, newer movies with dejudder set to 3, and hand-drawn cartoons, like old Disney movies and shorts, looked better with dejudder off, but they were still pretty choppy and had awful image trailing. Just maddening. You shouldn’t be supposed to have to change these settings for different types of video content. Even worse, to access image interpolation options on the C9 you had to dive into 2 or 3 sub-menus.

Curiously enough, when I saw cable TV run on a Sony A9, it looked pretty much fine. Which led me to the conclusion that LG’s motion tech is ass, and that if one really wanted an OLED, they’d better swallow the Sony tax and just avoid other brands.

Prices are great now compared to a few years ago for large OLEDs. I paid 3300 for a 77 inch CX almost 5 years ago and that was actually a couple hundred dollars discount at the time.

Couple with much higher brightness on the newer models and a cheaper price, it's well worth the cost. The panels are absolutely amazing and jaw dropping.

Just bought my second oled. Was hoping to go to 65”, but landed a 77” Sony series 8 for about the same price

Have to say, I haven’t looked back (now watching some Brian cox space series. Stunning is an understatement 👍😎)

Some things are just worth treating yourself well with 😁

I'd recommend getting some high res medical videos if you can to really see the flesh tones pop.

Something like the video of a colonoscopy, an anal wall collapse, birthing video or a vulvosocpy will really set your eyes off.

I have a CX. still looks as good as it did day 1 but there are a fuck load of dead pixels around the edges. Apparently this is a common issue for this model. I don’t see them in normal usage so don’t really care.

No burn in. Had it since September 2020. Can’t really justify a new TV right now. I’m still happy with it. When I do get a new TV I think I’ll go for 65” this time.

My OLED monitor seems to have developed a lot of noticeable marks on light backgrounds. There is a faint horizontal line near the bottom. Maybe I should do a manual pixel clean. On a positive side the Gsync works much better now. Flickering was so bad I turned it off but seems that Nvidia supports it now and it works perfectly.

OLED seems to even become old news with Sony launching a new tech next year.

May switch when they launch. Until then my A1 is still doing a great job!

Not really a new tech, still an LCD miniLED but with improved backlight (RGB).
Slower response times, worse viewing angles compared to OLED, DSE (Dirty Screen Effect) etc. are still going to be a thing. From what I'm reading on avsforum people say Bravia 9 was really bad when it comes to DSE despite reviewers saying the uniformity is ok.

My LG C1 is still going strong with no burn in issues. I don't think I could ever go back to a non OLED, whenever I'm at someone's house and they have a standard TV with a backlight it looks horrific

Yeah! White Lotus does that. There is a solution though. Set Gamma to High in the picture settings of the TV.

turned it off as i have mine set to auto hide. i could have turned it down to level 1 but no real point having it on.

thank goodness for that. it was really pissing me off when scrolling on white pages.

i have the MSI MPG 271QRX.

Yep, it's just another upgrade to LCD tech, but many flaws are still there.

Meanwhile OLEDs are getting brighter:

I have the S90C. I'm assuming the S90D still comes with the little "smart" remote. I didn't like that remote either, but i had an older 1080p Samsung with a full size remote and it works with the S90C. So just in case you didn't know, i definitely think it's worth picking up an old remote for a few bucks.
