Multiple publishers ‘ready to delay their games’ to avoid GTA 6 onslaught, it’s claimed

Market analysts are expecting GTA6 to be by far the biggest release of 2025, and unsurprisingly, multiple major publishers are prepared to move their own releases in order to avoid it, according to The Game Business.

“Rockstar games always suck a lot of money and, more importantly, time out of the market,” reportedly said the boss of one of the world’s biggest game publishers. “We don’t want to be anywhere near that. We are working up multiple different plans for our titles.”

Another senior exec is said to have added: “Even without GTA. it’s immensely difficult to find free time for new games to shine. Time is the real scarcity for us, not money. It’s tough out there.”

A third AAA publisher based in Europe told TGB that its most significant concern is if GTA launches at the end of October or early November, giving it little space to manoeuvre its own titles.

“We don’t want to launch just before or just after the game. If it arrives in late October, that means you either have to launch early – which a lot of people seem to be doing with the recent glut of summer release dates. Or go later, putting you up against the Black Friday sales.”

Furthermore, TGB spoke to two developers of ‘Top 10’ live service games who suggested they would move significant updates out of the way of GTA6’s launch window.

“GTA 6 is basically a huge meteor and we will just stay clear of the blast zone,” one studio boss said. “We will nudge our releases back or forward three weeks to avoid it. Of course, the problem is everyone is going to do the same. So three to four weeks before or after GTA 6, you’re going to get a load of games dropping content in what they believe will be the safe zone.”

These comments follow those of Electronic Arts boss Andrew Wilson, who suggested that EA could move its new Battlefield game, depending on when Rockstar’s game finally lands.

Speaking to the FT (paywalled) earlier this year, analysts at DFC Intelligence predicted that GTA 6 will generate $3.2 billion during its first year on sale, which is double what its predecessor managed back in 2013, and significantly more than 2024’s biggest movies Inside Out 2 ($1.7bn), and Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.3bn).

Three weeks before makes sense, but moving it forward a few weeks after GTA VI is still almost certain death, people are not going to be done with that game in 3 weeks, especially if Rockstar follows their tradition of only releasing the Online mode a few weeks after the singleplayer like they did with GTA V and RDR2.

It's interesting. I check the wiki for upcoming games every year, and this year the 2nd half is looking almost barren. But if we get to July and GTA VI still hasn't been announced for 2025, then somebody has to move.

This is going to guarantee GTA6 sells even more than it would have. Everyone side stepping it ensures it releases in a small drought when gamers are itching for something new to play.

I know there's a lot of people online who say they're not bothered about it and don't plan to buy on release, but if it scoops up 9's and 10's and there's nothing else new and shiny, a lot of them are going to get FOMO and pick it up. it's going to cause a pretty significant bump in sales.

Dear Employeers, please be prepared to write your whole staff up for no shows the day GT6 releases. This will be the day the earth stood still.

This just means we’re gonna have a dry late 2025 then, cause we all know GTA6 is getting one more delay to 2026.

Said it earlier also, GTA6 launch has given Sony a lifeline to experiment and buy time. They can afford to even delay games to 2026/27 given all the GaaS failures.
GTA6 being PS6 Console exclusive is crazy. (lol)

This "news" is like 6 months old. Why are they making an article now?
Hardly even news, everyone and their dads could have guessed that game publishers would have shuffled around release dates for the titles to avoid clashing with the biggest entertainment product in history.

$ 100 Base price.

Or $70 Story Mode, $30 online ?

Since the word out is it will be the first 100 dollar game.
Thats not at all whats been said.

That was an analyst who said "I wouldnt be surprised if they go with 100$"

An analyst. Nobody who works for Rockstar or TakeTwo.

Why would I delay my game? If I developed a chess board game, I might have a fan base that doesn't like GTA and plays what I put out.

I'm not even sure 3 weeks after would keep you safe, GTA V is in two of the top 20 most played games on steam right this second lol. Unless gta6 is poorly received I think normies will probably be dedicated to it for the rest of the year.

I can't wait to see GTA being delayed to next year and then suddenly all of these publishers decide to panic release their games next to each other making all of these games flop financially.

Darkness no more
They will give a date. Publishers will pick a different date after for their games. GTA6 will then announce a delay to a date publishers already pushed their games back to. Publishers will have to delay again.

Everyon delaying their games to early / mid 2026 only for GTA to be delayed for those months as well and we get shit to play late this year, and all those other games to flop in the end lmao

This why it's nice to be a Nintendo fan, they don't give a fuck about launching a 3D Mario or whatever else around GTA6 lol.

Its also a bit T2/Rockstar responsibility now....to not fuck around with the release dates.

People who hate games can make some serious overtime.

I dunno. I love games and I'm not particularly excited about GTA6. I'll pick it up when it drops in price, but I'm not in any rush. Honestly, I don't understand what the big deal is.

Dying Light: The Beast (aka Dying Light: The Real Sequel) is scheduled for release in Q3 of this year.
I expect to have a lot more fun playing that than I would GTA6.

Yeah it’s weird, do other publishers think that everybody is into GTA? I’ve never even played GTA5. And it’s not even coming to Steam this year and won’t likely run on Switch 2 and Xbox Series is dead in retail and it won’t be on last gen consoles. Lots of people will sit there waiting for something else to play.

I will play the story mode for a couple of weeks then probalbly sell anyway.never been interested in the online aspect.

I think after so long in development it won't live up to the hype for the story mode players. Online well that's a different story,it's the main focus for them now so meh.

2025 it could be released but 2026 seems more likely to potentially match the GTAVI.preorders open around holidays.nov-dec

I hope this game offers at least a VRR option, preferably with the possibility of locking to 40 fps.

GTA6 is going to keep selling and stay in the top 20 at the worst for a decade anyway. What is everyone going to do, not release anything for a decade?

I really don’t know. Gaming habits have changed a lot in the past ten years. People with a lot of time will burn through this in a week, while many others will alternate between some GTA sessions and other games. Your game isn’t gonna disappear if it releases close to GTA, especially now that everything is available digitally for years and word of mouth can boost interest in any game. I can understand your game could fall into a black hole if it released the same week as San Andreas or GTA4, but now?

Too much importance is given to first-week and first-month sales. The market is stupid.

That's because most games get their sales then, and also very importantly at full price.

As popular as GTA Online is, there's going to be a very big crowd that will buy the game at launch, maybe finish the single player (or not), then move on to something else.
