Switch games in 4k can be stunning

Gamer79

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
I am playing switch games on my TV and have the internal resolution cranked up to 4k. Certain titles like the Mario's, Kirby and the forgotten lands, Zeldas, and all other games that depend on artwork for their looks is just stunning. Kirby for example looks better than some animation I have seen. It's kinda like playing remastered switch games ( I physically own most before you judge) and the results look superb on my 65 inch Quantum dot oled display.

This is emulation. Not my videos but some examples:: Some of these people are using a 4090 but I assure you that is way overkill for emulation. I am running switch games at 4k with my 4070 and the GPU sits around 40% use the whole time.

**Disclaimer and always remember this>>>> When watching Gameplay videos on sources like Youtube that compress the final image output. In layman's terms, Games look better in person and on a screen than displayed here. Also note on what type of display you are watching or playing these games on. If you crank them up to 4k but playing on a $150 cheap monitor it is not going to look as good.

**2nd Disclaimer*** For all of those who are asking Who, what, where, and how. A quick google search and some youtube guides can help you. You cannot post those type of things on this board.

You aren't playing Switch games in 4k lol. You're playing Switch games at 900p or 1080p or whatever their native resolution, blown up to fit your 65" TV.

EDIT - nm my reading comprehension needs work this morning

Yeah....and it doesn't look good. Not to me anyway.

Edit: if he is talking about emulation then disregard. That's different

I definitely concur. This Ryujinx video is over a year old, but holy guacamole, it does a great job of upscaling these games internally.

OP isn't talking about emulation though is he? Just native Switch gaming on a 4K TV.

edit: nevermind. this is about emulation

Highly recommend playing them with an Mclassic dongle paired with a 4k Gamer Pro and you can see the difference in a 4k display. I play mine in a 75" Vizio P75Q9-J01 model and I can see the difference upscaled to 4k.

Which goes back to the debate that will define the Switch 2:

Should Switch 2 games be:
  1. 7th gen (and Switch) game assets at 4K-ish (Mario Kart 9 is likely to be more in this camp from what we've seen so far)
  2. 8th gen game assets at 1080p-ish
DLSS will figure into both, and I'm guessing you'll see more 7th gen looking stuff early on and trying to push high resolution, which will look glorious with Nintendo art as the OP is highlighting. But at some point they'll definitely try to push this thing and you'll probably not even get 1080p when that happens.

BotW and TotK would look glorious in 4K, but then again maybe 1080p with RTGI, better models and textures, etc., would actually be a better experience.

PS4 style graphics with DLSS should be the sweet spot for the Switch 2.

but I hope that as many Switch 1 games as possible get a patch to support higher internal resolutions and framerates.
this should be no issue to do

I haven't been able to fully discern whether OP is talking about native or emulation because, "have the internal resolution cranked up to 4k" could go either way. I just leaned into it to show that with emulation, it actually can be beautiful. Playing a Switch while docked on a 4K TV looks like utter dogshit though.

Yeah, I agree. Massive difference between emulated games that are upscaled taking advantage of PC hardware vs running Switch native games.

But back on topic, yes, emulated Switch games at 4k+/60fps+ look absolutely incredible.

There's a reason Nintendo is trying to shut all of this down before the Switch 2 releases. I suspect emulated cross-gen games on Ryujinx or Yuzu will look noticeably better than the same games on Switch 2.

The only way to get internal 4k resolution is on emulators.

Wii U games look really impressive on my PC running on the Cemu emulator at 1440p, even with only anti-aliasing and anisotropic texture filtering applied since Nintendo seem to shy away from using either of those in the majority of their games.

It just shows how good the core art design is in Nintendo's first party games in my opinion; it's just a shame that the hardware itself ultimately lets the games down. Much as I loved Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I ended up playing it far more on my PC (Wii U version via Cemu) than I did on my Switch just because the game looked and ran better (at 60 fps with a longer draw distance and so on). Mario Kart 8 is another game that looks glorious at higher resolutions on PC.

Much as I love Nintendo's games, I always end up being disappointed with the hardware. They were competitive up to the GameCube but the success of the Wii have fallen way behind both Microsoft and Sony in terms of hardware innovation to the point where I do not think they'll ever catch up. Switch 2 will be an improvement over Switch, sure, but it'll still be relatively weak graphically and will age even more once PS6 and Xbox Next enter the scene.

I would absolutely love it if Nintendo abandoned hardware and became a software publisher only so I play all their wonderful games on my PC or PS5 Pro. Kind of want the Switch 2 to fail in a way to "encourage" this to happen!!!

Lots of games made for weaker hardware can look really good when running at a high resolution and good framerate, if the art style is strong enough.
Which is why personally I think good IQ at 60fps or more >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Graphics.

To repeat my point in the Xenoblade X review thread:

We could get tons of games that looks like this at native (or near) 4K 60fps on the Ps5/SX. They'd probably be cheaper to make too.
Instead we get Ray tracing and Lumen or whatever at upscaled 720p 40-60fps.

Absolutely, but the secret sauce is to add framerate patches and some Lossless scaling on top for 120/240fps.
Kirby in particular looks AMAZING at 1440p/240. BotW & TotK look fine too, whoever, the distinct art direction does not play 100% nice with LS, so there are some minor artifacts. But it flows so well it's impossible to go back to 60fps.

Metroid Prime Remastered can be patched to 120fps (higher is possible, but physics can break). Looks immaculate with no artifacts.

You would need Switch 2,3,4,5,6 to all fail for Nintendo to consider leaving the hardware business.

Operating profit of $3.5 billion (even with the weak yen) last year in the 8th year of the console generation. Ungodly.

Kirby and the forgotten lands is one of the underrated graphical showcases of the Switch, I played it recently and wanted it to be in 60 fps so bad because its animations and deserved it so it could be better appreciated

What's the situation with Switch emulators at the moment? Is the scene dead or are there still people tinkering away?

Yeah can televisions/displays actually do that sort of thing yet? I mean, imagine if they could alter the resolution of what they're displaying, especially consoles. Even adding "Reshade" type effects; all integrated from within the display itself.

can be? almost all Nintendo 1P games are downright perfection thanks to their art direction
