Anything on a subscription service is going to quote player counts or other metrics. It doesn't make any sense to do otherwise, it would be like if the music charts still only counted CD and vinyl sales.

It doesn't take a genius to know this game sold like shit. Hopefully that Game Pass check helped cover the loss. I see this game gaining recognition through deep sales on Steam.
