Switch 2 Pre-Orders from Nintendo are only eligible to those with 12mo of NSO and 50hrs of playtime on Switch

Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025. Once invitation emails have been sent to all registrants meeting the priority criteria, invitations will be sent to remaining eligible registrants on a first-come, first-served basis.

In a pretty neat anti-scalper move, Nintendo is handling pre-orders with an opt-in invitation, but the only people eligible to register are those who have had at least 12 months of NSO service, and at least 50 hours of gameplay as of today, April 2nd.

I'm pretty happy about this. It seems like a decent way to combat scalpers. Obviously there will be other ways to pre-order outside of Nintendo, like Amazon/Best Buy/etc, but hopefully most of the inventory is sold directly through Nintendo. Seems like a good way to make sure fans of the original Switch will have top priority in getting the Switch 2.

Edit: For clarity, it sounds like if you didn't ALREADY have a 12 month subscription to NSO before today, you won't be eligible. So I wouldn't bother buying one right now. At least that's the way I understood it.

Yep this is a good way to combat scalpers

Oh hey, hell yeah. I might actually be able to pre-order one then. I had already resigned myself to spending a week or more making desperate calls to every retail store in a 50 mile radius. Get fucked, scalpers.

I haven't renewed in a while, but I guran-damn-tee I've logged more than 50 hours in on years of NSO. I sure hope they factor lapsed NSO members in. 🙏

They know their online subscription sucks, and this is an attempt to bolster their numbers (if only just for today).
I'm assuming that's 12 months of cumulative subscription time and not just going out today and paying $20 for a year today just to get in the preorder line.

kind of annoying, but hey at least those people that's tipping nintendo each month get something for once.
I easily get $50/year worth of content out of NSO. Between all the GBA and N64 games, and playing stuff like Goldeneye with the boys (at a GOOD framerate), it's super worth it to me. Plus it's nice that I didn't have to pay for the Mario Kart DLC.

But I suppose it's not worth much to people who don't care about retro games.

420 hours is Tetris 99!

50 hours is about what it took me to beat one Wizardry scenery. They should have asked for 500 hours at least!

Nice, so you don't have to currently be subscribed to NSO as long as you've had it for at least 12 months in the past right?
If you log into your nintendo account does it show anywhere how long you've been subbed?

Got to limit the scalpers somehow.

Not a bad strategy tbh. At least this way they know they're giving invites out to people who have a switch and actually play it.

Probably.

However, may be worth chancing it if you've played 50+ hours of games, which pretty much everybody has.

Relatively small price to pay, as I think pre-orders everywhere are going to be bad, as bots have killed any chance of otherwise pre-ordering / ordering a thing worthwhile online.

In which time frame must those requirements have been met? The entirety of the Switch's existence?

No matter the process, there will always be someone upset and/or left out.

Reward those who reward you, let the chips fall where they may.

this doesn't mean a damn thing if the system is going to retailers day one

It just means that people will scalp the console itself instead of the preorders. But that doesnt make the situation much better

Gameplay hours, no problem but the online thing, fuck off. Not really an issue personally as based upon todays showing I wouldn't pay half if what Nintendo are asking for the S2.

It means that fans of the original Switch will have the opportunity to buy it and not get locked out by scalpers.

A good move from Nintendo. I wonder what the Switch 2 availability will be this year. Hopefully, its not a PS5 situation since this would make my kid's Christmas. I'm not paying a $1 over MSRP to some scalper.

PS5 was embarrassing at launch because of scalpers.

Looks like Nintendo find a solution. Lets see if this work.

I just put in my "interest registration". unfortunately it was for the $500 bundle so now I'm stuck with that edition. Oh well...

It doesnt work retroactively lol
Yeah, that's the way I took it. I think you had to either have already had an active 12 month subscription before today, or possibly even have had to have the subscription running for literally over 12 actual months. Either way, I don't think people who sign up for NSO today will be eligible. (But if anyone wants to test out that theory, please update us here!)

Updating the OP.
