Indiana Jones PS5 Physical Edition requires Internet to Install

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle takes up a whopping 125GB of PS5 SSD storage space, so squeezing it onto a single Blu-ray was never going to happen. Discs for Sony's system can hold up to 100GB, and some developers have worked around these limitations by shipping their software on two discs.

Microsoft and Bethesda have taken the worst route possible for Indy's PS5 port, however, shipping a single disc with just 20GB of data on it.

A YouTube video, which shows the unboxing process, confirms an Internet connection is required to run the release – and if you insert the disc while offline, you won't be able to play a single second of gameplay. You'll simply be told to connect to the web to download the rest of the game.

There's an info box saying the game requires internet to install on the front coverart.

...and somehow that does not appear on any coverart shown on online retailers.

TBH. The main reason I still buy physical is because it's still cheaper than digital (at least here in Australia). Indiana is $99 AUD at retail vs $119 on PSN store.

So it´s the same as the Switch 2 game key cards:
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key cards unlock games for download.
  • Downloading the full game from the internet is required after using a Game-Key card.
  • Game-Key cards differ from classic Nintendo Game Cards as they do not store the full game.

I guess they missed the point of why some ppl still want physical copies. Fuck them, no money for you. I might play Indy when i find it dirty cheap, cuz thats how much digital games are worth for me.

Why would you want to install 125GB off a disc, that would take aaaages. A 125GB download is way quicker.
Edit: also remote install allows you to install it before release. Buy the physical disc, then when you get home it's already good to go

It can be faster than downloading, depends of what conection you have but a 50gb game installs in like 30 minutes on a PS5 while a download game from the same size can take 1h in my connection.

I can't believe this is still a thing people get upset about. I get not wanting to deal with a game that requires an always-on connection. But a one time download is a pretty minor issue.
Wait a few years when the server goes down and you can't play a game because of bullshit like that. Then you can talk how "minor issue" it is

Could have used up the whole disc, provided a game that at least started on its own without internet, and gated 20GB of content on the servers.

Regardless, they both require an online connection, always.

Only companies i know who do this have been Microsoft, warner bros hogwarts legacy. Probably a couple others. Those are the companies gamers need to watch out for who want to dominate us and control our games forever. I dont buy games that do this. Final fantasy rebirth has all the stuff on the disk. Why cant indiana jones do the same?

Peoples problems with this is not the 'now' of playing the game, but in the future. When you are supplying a game on a medium that is far more future proof than how you are supplying the rest of the game, that's the problem.

Why are some people all "Don't you have internet?" That's not the point, it's a disc, it comes with nothing on it.
Most likely game industry employees who work for these companies. You have to remember they come to forums as well. Anytime you see someone speak against their own self interest its most likely that or worse but i cant say because i dont want to be rude . All the game data not being on the disk goes against every gamers and consumers self interest. Only bad things can come from it. Its Never good not even for digital owners.

I don't understand how after this debate has been held literally hundreds of times, people still don't get where the problem is.

The point of the physical format is to keep the game, the day the PS5 PSN servers close you will lose the game you bought. A lot of people don't care, but those of us who buy physical games do. And no, most of the games don't come incomplete on the disc and don't need any day 1 patch, there are exceptions but not as many as many people say.

And before you come and say "but Steam..." the PC is an open platform, so if Steam were to close tomorrow, you could download all the games from your account and "backup" them (well... except the ones with denuvo).

Nintendo Game Key Cards

More publishers will be doing this going forward. Abstinence from a few die-hards isn't going to reverse the march of progress.

I'm curious, do you abstain from all games that are only released digitally, including smaller indie titles?

I'm not going to defend this scummy practice. I hate it as much as anyone.
But, regarding this specific point, Microsoft still has servers up allowing you to download digital versions of disc Xbox games from 24 years ago. My guess is that if you buy a Microsoft physical game, you will always be able to download it, as long as it's compatible with the machine you're trying to play on. Even the digital-only games from XBLA can still be downloaded, if you purchased them when they were still live.

"Keeping the game" is not the point of physical media. The companies who are producing physical media don't care about game preservation. They produce physical copies because it helps them sell more. It's purely profit driven. Your reason for buying physical media may be focused on game preservation, but that's a side benefit, not the primary reason it's produced.

While most games don't require a download, more will over time. It's easy to be a hold-out now when it's less than 5% of games. I wonder how many will skip games they've been looking forward to when it's 10%, 20%, or the next PS and Xbox consoles don't have physical media at all.

As for the server apocalypse people are worried about, you'll just be able to pirate the game if you really want to play it.

I want a physical copy purely for the purpose of putting it next to my Indiana Jones films
