Third time's a charm? Maybe. But I tend not to love a lot of the third games in my favorite franchises (Mass Effect, God of War, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Resident Evil, etc.)

What's a franchise where the third entry was the best, beating out all that came before or after?

realising now how impressive of a feature this is. most studio's lose their way long before their 3rd game. Most recent example I can think of is Doom TDA. Two brilliant games and it looks like they 'tried' to reinvent the wheel for the 3rd. So far it looks like the least appealing entry for me, and by a longshot as well.
