What is the biggest gaming franchise that is now a dead franchise?

Deus Ex
Burnout
XCOM
Command and Conquer
Final Fantasy
SoulCalibur
Halo
EverQuest
Trials

Halo.

Yes, Halo is alive, and I predict a bright future for it and all its fans and dark, dark and shameful times for all its doubters and critics. 😇

Considering sales? Guitar hero. Shit produced more plastic than Dow and ExxonMobil in a brief period of the 2000's

Considering importance for the industry?
Definitely Ultima.
Richard Garriot, along with other small series, defined what RPG on a computer is to a point that even Zelda copied it. Then the series laid the groundwork on modern W/CRPG (Ultima 7/8).
And then after almost two decades doing the above... Garriott invented the MMORPG.

And after all of this... "EA Games Challenge everything bzium!" And the series went to the chopping block.

Given how the genre resurged with Kickstarter and Larian, it's impressive that not a single soul in EA Corporate had the idea to outsource it to Larian.

People posting things like Final Fantasy, Halo, The Last of Us etc are being dumb. You not liking the newest games in the franchise doesn't make it dead.

Forza Motorsport looks to quite possibly being done. Microsoft just laid off over half the studio and has the remaining members just keeping current servers running and support for other studios.

Edge lords are out with their Halo comments! 😂

Unreal Tournament is the correct answer. Damn you Fortnite!

Resistance dying is so obvious to me as a dead franchise, we see shooters go on and on, apex legends, other shooters have resistance in their DNA.

Yeah was going to say.. Infinite sold really well (>20m) despite the number drop off in multiplayer. And the multiplayer did quite well in its initial launch period. Far from dead.

I'd say as games releases go Castlevania is pretty much dead.
Halo Infinite sold 20 million copies+? Since when?

Edit: I'm guessing you meant player numbers, because it did not sell 20 million copies.

Ratchet and Clank series - I know it's not dead but it's been so long that it might as well be unfortunately.

Starcraft series - About time we get a new Starcraft

Warhammer Dawn of War series - Really need a part 4 or another huge RTS

Prototype series

Dishonored series

Really hard to overstate how big RTS games were, then it all just evaporated. Maybe it is still big in South Korea, I don't know. But MOBA ate it up and now MOBA is just this weird thing in its own corner of the internet. Maybe RTS will come back someday.

it won't

Zone Of The Enders -- Come on Konami, only two games, i know about HD ports and re-releases, but do another, the world needs more mech games where the mechs are not just slow moving tanks basically and have to worry about overheating or low ammo counts.
Recently played through the HD collection again on my PS3, still amazing till this day.

I think a top contender for this would be Guitar Hero. Sold about 40 million from 2005-2010 and then disappeared for some years before resulting in a low-selling reboot in 2015. At this point, considering all the tech people can use in place of a Guitar Hero set-up, a new game would prob be a hard sell even these days.
Dead rising and bioshock.

Sunset Riders
Kid Icarus
Actraiser
Tenchu
Ogre Battle
Sega Rally
Virtual On

Yeah - ill go with those for my tastes.
There are surprisingly many classic series that have been revived, with very mixed results of course - so hoping for a relaunch might not be for the better.

Dead Space. It had a Trilogy, Rail Shooter Spinoff and couple of Anime movies. Haven't heard much about the franchise after the 2023 remake.

Biggest? hmm, yeah, Guitar Hero might be it.

Or Warcraft RTS. Technically, they got remastered recently, but it seems Blizzard will never make a new one. Those were big back in the day.

Is Banjo-Kazooie dead? I guess so :-(

Nintendogs was massive for a while.

SSX was big as well, especially SSX Tricky.

Left 4 Dead was big on PC and consoles.

Killzone seems done.

Ultima was too niche, even if it was big in PC communities back in the day.

Deus Ex wasn't big enough, neither was Resistance.

Infinite selling 20M? WTF are you smoking. It only got that number because of GP.

Guitar Hero is a good shout, that was everywhere and then it was nowhere. Wiped off the face of the earth.

SimCity hasn't had a new game in over a decade.

Medal of Honor being dead is a pretty big deal, I remember how it actively competed with CoD for many years. And these days EA isn't even trying to mix things up and give it a chance to come back, they prefer to keep making Battlefield sequels.
